The Michigan Horticultural Therapy Association is excited to present its 33rd annual conference to be held at Michigan State University. Lisa Schactman, MS, HTM will present Nurturing the Therapeutic Relationship. Lisa is the Life Skills Director at CooperRiis (a healing farm community for individuals with mental health conditions located in western North Carolina). Lisa will share the enhanced recovery model, their successful approach to helping individuals. The heart of the program is the development of meaningful relationships which are key in the healing process. The life skills program allows for staff to support residents through the building of interpersonal relationships and practicing other skills (Learn more at www.cooperriis.org). This conference features a variety of breakout sessions including hands-on craft workshops, educational displays, book sales, door prizes, networking opportunities, and an optional visit to the MSU Indoor/Outdoor Childrens Garden. It is certain to be a positive educational experience for everyone with an interest in horticultural therapy. HEALING GARDENS
Brian Slovack, RLS a.m. Brian will give an introduction to Healing Gardens, including current trends and examples. He will share what

should or should not be included in healing gardens, based on the latest research. Brian is a landscape architect from Chicago, AHTA BOD member and president of Site To Place Design INTRODUCTION TO WORM COMPOSTING Erica Barajas a.m. Interested in learning how to turn your kitchen scraps into nutritious, free fertilizer for your plants and garden? Come learn how to set up and maintain a worm composting bin including materials needed, where to get them, and how to keep your worms happy. Erica is the Growing Matters Garden Manager for Fair Food Matters, a non-profit organization in Kalamazoo that promotes local food production and consumption. BREAKING IT DOWN: HOW TO PRESENT YOUR HT PROGRAM
Rachel Jacobsen, LLMSW and John Murphy, BSW a.m.

You represent HT in Michigan! Become skilled in presenting your program which is important for educational seminars, marketing and more. Map out your program components and practice your delivery in small groups. Rachel works as Community Development Coordinator and Senior Garden Program facilitator at Hannan Foundation, a senior service and learning center in Detroit. John is a Social Worker who has worked for Kalamazoo County and Western Michigan University, currently serving as a board member and VP of MHTA. NATURE AND SPIRITUALITY: MAKE THE CONNECTION
Sarah Sieradzki, OTR/L, HTR, CDP and Cynthia Hasko, Activities Assistant a.m. and p.m.

Spirituality is all about our connection to nature and to forces greater than ourselves. In this hands on session, learn about this through making a pressed flower mandala, a Blessing Box, and mask of natures Green Man. Sarah is a Clinical Specialist in mental health occupational therapy at Case Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio. Cynthia is an Activity Therapy Assistant and has worked in a variety of healthcare settings. BUILDING COMMUNITY GARDENING Mark Covington p.m. Learn about Georgia Street Community Garden Collective, an intergenerational garden located on Detroits East Side, with a mission to promote health, education, rebuilding and sustaining the community. Mark is founder of Georgia Street Community Collective/Gardens and on the board of directors of Detroit Agricultural Network, and a great community organizer! THE BEAUTY AND BENEFITS OF GROWING LAVENDER Iris Underwood p.m. Join this session to learn of the beauty and benefits of growing lavender and about healing the human being and the land we inhabit. Iris is an author, poet, writing mentor, lavender farmer & graduate of Oakland University She is owner of Yule Love It Lavender Farm, and member of Seven Ponds of Friends of Herbs, Michigan Herb Associates, & Herb Society of America. MSU GREENHOUSE TOUR MSU staff Join MSU staff in a tour of the greenhouses at the Plant and Soil Science Building, including the indoor butterfly garden and outdoor tour of the MSU 4-H Childrens garden, weather permitting.

GETTING TO THE ROOT OF HORTICULTURAL THERAPY Cathy Flinton, HTR p.m. This session is an introduction to the basics of horticultural therapy. Learn how HT is applied with persons with special needs who, what, why, and how HT improves well-being! Cathy is a Horticultural Therapist Registered (HTR) and MHTA Conference Coordinator. She works as a Horticultural Therapist with traumatic brain injured clients at Hope Network Lansing Rehabilitation Services.

DISPLAYS: Do you have an exhibit that showcases the therapeutic horticulture program where you work or volunteer? A limited number of spaces are available; please reserve a spot by checking the box on the registration form. HORTICULTURAL THERAPY BOOKS: A variety of books, including new titles, will be for sale at the conference. Cash or checks accepted; however, credit card transactions are not available.
