Passing and Moving

Players need to be aware of their positioning in relation to other players in a game. Being aware of where their teammates are is a vital attribute for your players. This week, Ajax Cape Towns Craig Rosslee demonstrates a drill that can help your players improve their positional awareness and their movement off the ball. At the same time it helps them to practise short passing and improves their touch on the ball.

Organizing the drill

Diagram A Set up 4 cones 10 metres x 10 metres as shown in Diagram A. Place 5 players (xo) around the outside of the square and place 2 players (xi) and (xii) inside the square as shown in Diagram A. Make sure each of the 5 players (xo) on the edge of the square has a ball to start the drill.

Practising the drill

Diagram B Player (xi) and player (xii) work together in this drill. Both player (xi) and player (xii) must be aware of each others position at all

times for the drill to work effectively. Player (xi) is the first player to demand a pass from any of the outside players (xo). Once the ball is played to player (xi), player (xii) must position himself a couple of metres behind player (xi). Player (xi) does not receive the pass, instead he dummies (makes as if) to receive the ball and instead allows the ball to go through his legs to player (xii), who is positioned a couple of metres behind him. Player (xii) now has the ball and immediately plays a first-time ball back to player (xi) who has positioned himself to receive the ball. Player (xi) receives the ball and plays it

back to the original player (xo) from whom he demanded the ball. Player (xo) is finished with his duty for now and awaits the next time player (xi) or player (xii) demands the ball.

Diagram C
The roles are now reversed for player (xi) and player (xii) as shown in Diagram C. Player (xii) now demands the ball from any of the outside players (xo) but does not receive the pass, instead he dummies (makes as if) to receive the ball and instead allows the ball to go through his legs to player (xi). Player (xi) receives the pass and immediately plays it back to player (xii). Player

(xii) now plays it back to the original player (xo) from whom he originally demanded the pass. Player (xo) is finished with his duty for now and awaits the next time player (xi) or (xii) demands the ball. Rotate players (xi) and (xii) from the inside with any two of the outside players (xo) every 8 minutes.

Coachs Note:
Players on the outside must make sure their pass is on the ground and very accurate for the drill to work effectively. You can start the drill at two touch for players (xi) and (xii) but make it one touch when the players feel comfortable practising the drill.
