Safe T Smart Plug

ADDRESSES THE SHORT COMINGS OF TESTING AND TAGGING

This new technology allows all electrical equipment when in use to be monitored
continuously for electrical faults at the power point. Dedicated computer software
records and instantly displays any faults detected. Fault detection can trigger visual
alarms or power can be cut off to the faulty equipment. Test data is continuously
collected and compiled for audit and reporting requirements as well as trend analysis.

Using the latest technology The Safe T Smart

Plug System provides a worlds best practice
electrical monitoring and safety system.
The system works by replacing every power
point within a building/workplace with a Safe T
Smart Plug Power Point. Any electrical
equipment plugged into a Safe T Smart Plug
Power Point is tested for earth leakage and
earth continuity every half a second. The
electricity supply to the power point is
immediately disconnected if a fault is recorded.
Where it is not practical to disconnect power to
vital equipment a visual alarm can be triggered
to warn of the fault. Faults are reported via the
electrical wiring of the building to a computer
every 20 seconds.
The threshold for the system to register a fault
is pre-set to the Australian Standards for earth
leakage and earth continuity.
Incorporated into the system are highly visible Computer Screen View Of Monitoring Software
signs at each power point which is a constant
safety reminder to all staff.
Regular visual inspections of equipment and
power leads are made easy with inspection
check lists generated from a software data
base.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who is responsible for electrical safety
Each state has written legislation to establish as law that the occupier of a premises must take
'reasonable' precautionary steps to prevent any injuries resulting from the use of electrical
equipment.
What is reasonable care — What do we need to do
How does the occupier interpret the requirement to do all that is reasonable and practicable to
ensure safety? To answer this you need to look at WorkCover codes of practise and guidance
notes (neither of which are legally binding) to discover what is currently considered to be adequate
care. These documents, throughout Australia, all recommend compliance with AS3760.
Requirements in these documents are not legally binding, but, they do establish the MINIMUM
level of care that is considered to be acceptable. In the event of an incident WorkCover and / or
the courts will look to these documents to determine whether the occupier has done enough to
prevent such an incident. If they weren't following the guidelines what were they doing and was
that good enough.
Does the Safe T Smart Plug safety system meet WorkCover requirements
The Safe T Plug safety system exceeds the requirements of AS3760. Safe T Smart Plug actually
provides a new bench mark in reasonable and economically viable work place safety and care.
How does Safe T Smart Plug increase work place electrical safety
Replaces periodic testing and tagging with continuous testing, eliminates substandard tests,
eliminates ability to ignore testing requirements (such as using out-of-date equipment) and
through signage and colour coded plugs constantly reminds staff and personnel of electrical
safety.
How is this achieved
The Safe T Smart Plug is a power point that includes a circuit board with microprocessor. The
circuit board and microprocessor take an earth leakage measurement every half a second and an
earth continuity measurement every 2 minutes of any electrical equipment plugged into the power
point. Equipment is tested in both operating an non operating modes.
What happens when a fault is detected
Immediately a fault is detected the Safe T Smart Plug power point can either: (1) Turn the power
off to the outlet of the power point. (2) Send a signal to turn on a flashing light or siren. (3) Send a
fault signal to the computer. (4) Or do all of the above.
How does the Safe T Smart Plug power point record a fault
Dedicated software has been written to allow a standard computer to communicate with each Safe
T Smart Plug power point. The measurements taken by each Safe T Smart Plug power point is
transmitted to the computer which records the data and displays any faults that are detected.
How is the data from the Safe T Smart Plug power point transmitted to the computer
A technology known as X10 is used. This technology uses the existing electrical wiring to carry
data signals which allows most areas of a building to have Safe T Smart Plug power points
installed.
How does the computer connect to the electrical wiring of a building
The computer is connected to the electrical wiring of the building via an interface box which
isolates the computer from the 240v power source with special protective electronic parts. An X10
signalling device the same as is used in the Safe T Smart Plug power point is housed in the
interface box. This device is used to transmit signals to and from the computer. A serial cable
connects the computer to the interface box.
How many Safe T Smart Plug power points are needed
For the Safe T Smart Plug system can only increase the safety if all existing power points in a
build are be replaced with Safe T Smart Plug power points. This ensures all equipment will be
tested whenever plugged into any power point.
An optional warning light, to alert staff to a fault somewhere within the building, can be plugged
into any power point and be turned on by a signal from the computer whenever a fault is recorded.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does the software work
All data from each Safe T Smart Plug power points are transmitted to the computer and recorded
by the Safe T Smart Plug dedicated software. When the software is initially set up a plan of the
building is included, all power points locations are added to the plan. A number is allocated to
each power point. When a fault is recorded the particular power point flashes red or orange on
the computer screen. The position of the power point immediately identified within the building.
How does the system determine which equipment is faulty if more than one piece of equipment is
in use with a power board
While from an electrical safety perspective it is preferable not to use power boards, the Safe T
Smart Plug power point with a power board plugged into it measures the cumulative earth leakage
or earth continuity (resistance to earth) of all equipment powered from the power board. If a fault
is recorded each piece of equipment can be individually tested. The computer software contains a
test window that allows a request to be sent to an individual Safe T Smart Plug power point to test
the equipment plugged in at the time. The results are sent back to the computer and displayed on
the screen. By testing each piece of equipment individually the fault equipment will be identified.
If the system is non computerised with power point, power cut off feature each piece of equipment
is still individually tested in a power point. However the faulty equipment will cause the power to
be cut off to the power point when the fault is detected.
How is power turned on to a power cut off power point
To restore power to a power point a special hand held signal device is unplugged into any nearby
power point and with the push of a button a signal is sent to the power point to turn power on.
Alternatively the same signal can be sent from the Safe T Smart Plug software on the monitoring
computer.
Does the power cut off substitute for an RCD
Definitely NOT. An RCD (Residual Current Device) is intended to turn power off when within 300
micro seconds of a fault occurring. The Safe T Smart Plug power cut off system does not meet
this requirement and is only intended as a means to warn of electrical equipment failing to meet
earth leakage and earth continuity testing standards.
How is each piece of equipment identified
When the Safe T Smart Plug system is first set up all equipment is tagged with a Safe T Smart
Plug tag. Any new equipment must also be tagged before it becomes operational. The main point
of the tag is to provide an identification number for each piece of equipment, so in the event of a
fault the equipment can be identified by description and tag number.
What reports can be generated by the software
Reports that can be generated include:
Faults register for any date range including actions taken to repair or dispose of the equipment
A register of all equipment
All equipment that have recorded a fault
Equipment with a specified number of faults
A physical inspection sheet listing all equipment. Pass, fail and comments are recorded on this
sheet each time physical inspection of equipment is undertaken.
What tags are required to be placed on my electrical equipment
When the system is first set up or when any new equipment is purchased an identification tag is
attached to the power cable of all equipment. Double insulated equipment are fitted with a blue
coloured tags and earth earthed equipment with orange tags.
Do I need to physically inspect my electrical equipment
All equipment including power cables and power leads must be physically checked for damage
which could cause a potential electrical hazard/shock every six months or as set out in AS3760.
Any equipment that does not pass this inspection must be removed from service immediately.
Can I carry out the physical inspection
Physical inspections must be carried out by a person deemed to be competent in the area of
electrical equipment safety. To be deemed a competent person an accredited training course
must be attended.
