Feedback was positive. The employment fair is an opportunity to discover job and career possibilities here at home. Please be sure to bring copies of your resume to leave with potential employers.

Conference Day Sessions

AM SESSION: 11:00 11:45 AM
Register on form by session number (1) How a TMA Service Dog can Assist You THERAPEUTIC MEDICAL ALERT SERVICE DOGS

Rhonda Langille, Founder and Senior Trainer

TMAS dogs offer a unique type of therapy in support of individuals with emotional concerns, mental health challenges, physical injuries such as loss of limbs, balance problems or spinal cord injuries. Dogs can be trained to respond to between 80 and 100 commands that may help the individual to stay calm in a high stress situation or assist with tasks requiring mobility. When partnered with a TMAS Dog and a working union is formed, the dog can support and help an individual become stronger in their abilities to function with greater independence, enabling them to overcome obstacles where other therapies have been unsuccessful. Learn more about these specific tasks and the success of TMAS dog partnerships. (Also offered at 2:30 pm) (Exhibitor) (2) How Can I Help You? Tips for Being a Successful Volunteer ACADIA CENTRE FOR SOCIAL & BUSINESS ENTREPRENEURSHIP

Joel Stoddart, Manager, Business & Non- Profit Development Lisa Lowthers, Non-Profit Development & Staff Relations
Its a well known fact that many volunteer-driven organizations fail to maximize the potential of their volunteer base (volunteers like you). As a result, some volunteers stand around not knowing how to help, lose interest, and may eventually leave. That makes everybody sad. Although this is not the volunteers fault, there ARE things you - the volunteer can do to ensure you get the most out of your volunteer experience. Volunteering is an excellent opportunity to gain skills -based experience that can be added to your resume, so make the most of it. Attend this fun, interactive workshop to find out how. (Also offered at 1:15 pm) (Exhibitor) (3) How Behaviour is Affected by a Learning Disability TURNING TIDES OUTREACH SERVICES/BRIDGEWAY ACADEMY

In Nova Scotia, any person 19 and over is considered competent and capable of directing their own affairs unless declared incompetent by the courts. What options are available to support decision making around financial and other important decisions? In this seminar, we will look at the options to support the decision-making power of an adult with a disability, the important differences between guardianship and Powers of Attorney, the use of guardianship with higher functioning adults and the possibility of obtaining guardianship without incurring the cost of a lawyer.

(7) Integrating WYNN into your Curriculum FREEDOM SCIENTIFIC / BILL BAKER CONSULTING

Bill Baker, Owner, Bill Baker Consulting Peggy Dalton, Head of Professional Department, Freedom Scientific
This presentation will demonstrate how educators and instructors can integrate commonly used study strategies into their curriculum or course work using the WYNN software program. We will discuss how WYNN facilitates the reading, writing, studying, and comprehending process. It is an established fact supported by research and practice that people learn, comprehend, and retain things better using multiple modalities. This multisensory approach is the basis for sound educational approaches in working with students with dyslexia. Specifically, special education teachers often incorporate the bi-modal approach for people with reading difficulties, using a combination of verbal and visual input to enhance reading, comprehension and studying. With advances in technology it is now possible to develop more efficient solutions tailored for the specific needs of students. (Also offered at 2:30 pm) (Exhibitor) (8) A Guide to Special Education Program Planning STUDENT SERVICES-ANNAPOLIS VALLEY REGIONAL SCHOOL BOARD

Cindy Giffen, Coordinator, Student Services

Education program planning is more successful when a partnership exists between home and school. Individual strengths and needs of some students require a team approach to planning appropriate education. This interactive session will provide parents and educators, as well as other agencies, the opportunity to explore the program planning process for students with exceptionalities in Nova Scotia. Reference material will be provided in addition to information for parents in understanding their rights, roles and responsibilities.
