DIFFERENT LITARATURE TYPES 1. Prose closer to the speech or ordinary people a. Fiction not based on facts.

s. It is make-believe and imaginary. i. Novel a long narrative divided into chapters and involves many characters. 1. Allegory - The symbolical story revolves around two meanings. What the writer says directly is totally different from the conveyed meanings at the end. Political and Historical allegory are two forms of Allegory. 2. Comedy - Satire is very common form in comedy novels and tries to focus on the facts of the society and their desires. 3. Epistolary - The collection of letters or mails is the epistolary novels. 4. Feminist - These types of novels are written by women writers around the world to describe the place of women in a male dominated society. 5. Gothic - Gothic fiction is the combination of both horror and romance. Melodrama and parody were grouped in the Gothic literature in its early stages. 6. Ironic - Ironical novels are known for excessive use of narrative technique. 7. Realism - The realistic novels are based on the truths of ordinary society and their problems. It focuses on the plot, structure and the characters of the novel. 8. Romance - basically the story revolves around love affairs of main characters. 9. Narration: In narrative style, writer becomes the third person who narrates whole story around the characters. 10. Naturalism: Naturalism is based on the theory of Darwin. 11. Picaresque: It is opposite to romance novels as it involves ideals, themes and principles that refuse the so-called prejudices of the society.

12. Psychological: It's the psychological prospective of mind with a resolution. ii. Short Story narratice of limited length involving one or more characters and one plot. iii. Fable a story that teaches a moral or a lesson. The characters are often animals or inanimate things which speak and act like people. iv. Novelette prose narratives that are intermediate between the short story and the novel. v. Mythology story dealing with the gods, demigods, mythological creatures and legendary heroes of a particular people. vi. Anecdote a short tale narrating an interesting or amusing biographical incident. vii. Fairy Tale simple narrative typically of folk origin dealing with supernatural beings or obviously improbable events, scenes, and personages and often having a whimsical, satirical, or moralistic character. viii. Satires stories in which human vices and follies are held up to ridicule. ix. Legends usually about origins x. Folktale a story that has been passed down, usually orally, within a culture. It may be based on superstition and feature supernatural characters. A folktale includes fairy tales, tall tales, trickster tales and other stories passed down over generations. b. Non-Fiction can be a true story about a person, place or thing. It is based solely on facts. A non-fiction book can also be a reference book such as a dictionary, atlas, etc. i. Essay the authors detailed point of view or opinion about any particular topic or problem. ii. Biography is a story of a persons life written or told by another person. iii. Autobiography is the story of a persons life written or told by that person. iv. Letters direct or personal written messages addressed to a person or group, for private or public communication.

v. Diaries are the incidents recorded by the author without any means of publishing them. It is the rough work of ones daily routine, happenings, memorable days or events in his life. vi. News is a report of daily or weekly events related to politics, sports, leisure, fashion, movies and business. vii. Oration formal treatment of a subject intended to be spoken in public. It appeals to the intellect, to will or to the emotions of the audience. viii. History - is the discovery, collection, organization, and presentation of information about past events. ix. Law - is a system of rules and guidelines, usually enforced through a set of institutions. It shapes politics, economics and society in numerous ways and serves as a social mediator of relations between people x. Journal - is one of types of diaries that records infinite information. 1. Personal - It is for personal analysis. In this journal one can write his goal, daily thoughts, events and situations. 2. Academic - It is for students who do research or dissertation on particular subjects. 2. Poetry literary work in metrical form; verse. a. Narrative poetry tells a story in rich imaginative and rhythmical language i. Epic about heroic exploits often under supernatural control ii. Metrical Tale equivalent of short story in poetry and deals with any emotion or phrase of life and told in a simple, straightforward, and realistic manner. iii. Ballad the shortest and simplest narrative poem which tells us of a single incident, usually about love and intend to be sing. iv. Metrical Romance long, rambling love story in verse b. Lyric poetry originally meant to be sung, occurred in varied rhythms and often expressed personal emotions and experience. i. Sonnet short poem of 14 iambic pentameter lines grouped into Shakespearean and Italian sonnets.

ii. Ode poem of noble feelings towards some person or thing worthy of praise and adulation. iii. Psalms song praising God iv. Elegy the type of poem lamenting the death of a person and which expresses feelings of grief and melancholy. v. Simple Lyric any short poem where the verse is especially musical or where there is marked subjective or emotional tone. vi. Song short lyric poem intended to be sung 1. Secular songs nonreligious 2. Sacred songs - religious c. Poetic Play/ Dramatic Poetry a play composed in poetic form i. Tragedy - drama that has a tragic ending just like the death of the leading characters. ii. Comedy - In general, a literary work that is amusing and ends happily. iii. Farce - A type of comedy based on a farfetched humorous situation, often with ridiculous or stereotyped characters. iv. Melodrama a dramatic form that doesnt observe the law of cause and effect and that exaggerates emotion and emphasizes plot or action at the expense of characterization. v. Tragicomedy a dramatic or other literary composition combining elements of both tragedy and comedy. vi. Historical Play - a play representing events drawn wholly or partly from recorded history. vii. Social Poems may be comic or tragic and aim to bring about changes in social conditions.

3. Drama theatrical dialogue performed on stage, which consists of 5 acts and scenes within an act. a. Tragedy a story of the major character that faces bad luck. Tragedy, elements of horrors and struggle usually concludes with the death of a person.

b. Comedy is where the lead character overcomes the conflicts and the overall look is full of laughter and the issues are handled very lightly. c. Farce exaggerated comedy where situations are too ridiculous to be true and the characters seem to be caricatures and the motives undignified and absurd. d. Melodrama is a blend of two nouns melody and drama. It is a musical play most popular by 1840 and is usually sad but has a happy ending like comedy. e. Tragicomedy the play that begins with serious mode but has a happy ending. f. Historical Play taken from the lives of outstanding figures in history.
