THE BENEFITS OF SPEAKING EFFECTIVELY IN ENGLISH Honourable Mr Principal, my beloved fellow teachers and staff and a very good

morning to my entire alma mater school leavers. First of all I would like to thanks Mr Principal for inviting me as alumni committee in this very meaningful morning. I would like to congratulate to all of you school leavers for your dedication, and hardworking in past years for continued learning and finishing the school before making your way into adulthood. Im here today as committee member of our school alumni would like to help you walking through your future as someone who had been there before. Ive been invited to give a presentation on titled The Benefits of Speaking Effectively in English. I know many of you flabbergasted when you hear the word speaking in English, but I can assure you theres nothing to be afraid of. That is why Im going to talk to all of you the benefits so you will broaden your mind to hear such a wonderful yet promising future youll be heading. Introduction English has become the world most used languages in the whole world, with not only it become as an official language for country such as United State of America, Britain, Australia and many more; it also has become the official second language for numerous country including country from the commonwealth country such as Malaysia, Singapore etc. Moreover English is the international language of diplomacy, business, science, technology, banking, computing, medicine, aviation, UN & NATO armed forces, engineering, tourism, and many more. With the widespread use of English around the world, no wonder it become necessary to learn English from such an early age to make it habitual for their learning process. The dominant of English in many career paths such as lawyer, doctor, engineer and many more has trigger awareness for the need of speech training in English. This kind of training is necessity for those who want to pursue that career path because all the material and learning tools are in English. Not only that they also must speak English fluently and effectively. As a developing country such as us, with the fast growing to become an advanced country, as the matter of course English been used in education, government administration, business and many more. That is why this presentation emphasise the benefit of speaking English so we can learn and notify the use of this language in your future planning as a school leavers are very important. Even if you can get an A in your SPM for English but cant speak English

fluently, it will be wasteful as the important part of learning English is to communicate not to write only. So that is why speaking effectively in English are essential for all of you school leavers as it can be helpful yet important in providing great chances for your future.

Oral communication in English and personal development Have you ever come across in this kind of situation? Someone asking for direction from you in English and all you can say is I dont know even thou you understand and knew that place directions. Why does this happening? Its all base on your level of confident. How to improve it? Oral communication in English can improve your self-confidence. Language input favours language performance. The more you practice the better. So how are you going to practice? Im going to give you three skills using oral communication ways to boost your confident and self-worth, improve your proficiency and develop bilingual competence in Malaysian context and that is Interpersonal communication, group communication and public speaking. Interpersonal communication is communication between two or more within impersonal and personal range. You can choose to alter your subconscious delivery of these messages. You may be talking to someone that you may not agree with, but you will smile and seem interested in order to be polite. Those messages (the smile, for example) are not natural, as you do not believe what you are discussing, and human instinct would dictate a different response. However, your choice to deliver positive feedback is the result of a conscious decision- you want to deliver that feedback for whatever reason. For an example, conversation between you and your employer. You may speak freely with him but you wouldnt talk about your personal life toward him. This skill will help you gain confident because you need your employer to understand every details of it so there wont be any miscommunication in getting the result. You also can gain self-worth from your employer perspective depend on your level of confidence convincing him. Your employer will definitely please to have a worker such as you who can speak English and can work with English mother-tongue with no hindrance thus develop your competency. Group communication is communication between three or more individuals which serves relationship needs as well as task-based needs. It can be in family bonding such as parents

with children or it also can be in a group like study group where you will discuss your assignment between your friends. For example a discussion between parents and their children on where they want to go for holiday. In this skill you also will be confident to talk to your parents so they would listen on where you would like to go. Your self-worth also can be improve when your parents agree to go with your plan and you and will gain your proficiency as you can have this type of communication regularly with your family. The skills that become the most self-worth and confident booster are public speaking. Public speaking (public communication) involves communication between speaker and an audience such as right now and the audience consist between a few to thousands of people. For an example, a headmaster speaking to his fellow students, talking about student disciplines in school assembly. The ability to talk in front of public will develop your self-believe and confident in addressing your point. These three skills are very helpful in your personal development to be a better person. This confidence will help you in the future in other situation such as meeting new people, interviewing, convincing people and dealing with everyday problem and difficulty. It also will help you organize your thought before speaking and focusing on the message that you want to deliver. Effective speech performance in public The ability to speech in front of public is a one thing, but to give an effective speech is another. Many speakers tend to assume that what they have to do is just to speak but forgotten the most important part on public speaking that is listener or audience. An effective speech only will occur if we understand what the audience want and how we can deliver our point effectively. How youre going to do that? You should participate actively in the conversation not only by stating your view but also you need to learn to listen. By listening actively youll be able to understand than youll be able to deliver according to its demand. For an example a press conference with the media; you should know what to answer only if you actively listen and then youll be able to deliver your point accordingly. Communication is based on sender and receiver. If there is no receiver than there is no communication. The other skills are that you should know is what to ask and when to ask. The best way is get to know your listener. In communication, asking shows healthy interaction and interest. It will also give you a better understanding of their culture and way of thinking. Understanding

how cultures vary can help us to make meaningful comparisons; however, there are numerous other factors that can influence our ability to understand each other. Different cultures have different rules that influence the way we behave, how we speak, what we value, our concept of time. You should prompt and ask if it is alright for you to ask some questions if its something that can be personal. Youll ask to get confirmation on something or someone. You should know how to ask relevant questions to continue conversation. The right question will take you to the right understanding. Then youll be able to relate on the topic of conversation. For an example a conversation about football between your colleagues and the topic is about Malaysia performance in international level. You can ask question about it their recent result to get the idea on how the performance of the team. That is how you ask to make the conversation effectively. The other benefit of speaking effectively in English is that well be able to point out our view and for others who unable to point out effectively for themselves. Keep your listeners thinking along with you and provide appropriate responds. Then youll be able to provide new angle to persuading others to adopt your point of view. The effective use of words can be helpful in maintaining control of a conversation and in gaining the support of others. For an example, in some point what you are saying are true, but I think from student point of view, we cannot afford having a credit card due to our lack of income to support our lifestyle.

You should also need to provide informed viewpoint to support your point. Informed viewpoint will assure your point and gain trust from others. The most reliable information is the best viewpoint that can be table. To make your opinion sound logic, explanation and justification will provide believe among other with facts, statistics, examples and personal stories. For an example, theres going to rain this evening. I watch weather forecast last night. You should bring an umbrella with you. You should also share something personal so that we can relate to him or her. Find some common ground to relate and make connection. Dont go into a long boring connection and let them indicate if they want to know. Self-disclosure are one of a way to connect and initiate trust level that can lead into continues and meaningful conversation. For an example, are you from Melaka? My aunty is from Melaka to. She lives in Bukit Rambai.

Good speaking abilities important for better job/career prospects

As we know that English is an international language, which is spoken by a majority of population in the world. , being able to talk to them in their own languages will help you to communicate with them. It may also help you to make sales and to negotiate and secure contracts. Knowledge on their mother-tongue language may also increase your chances of finding a new job, getting a promotion or a transfer overseas, or of going on foreign business trips. Many English-speaking business people don't bother to learn other languages because they believe that most of the people they do business with in foreign countries can speak English, and if they don't speak English, interpreters can be used. The lack of foreign language knowledge puts the English speakers at a disadvantage. In meetings, for example, the people on the other side can discuss things amongst themselves in their own language without the English speakers understanding, and using interpreters slows everything down. In any socialising after the meetings, the locals will probably feel more comfortable using their own language rather than English. With ability to speak in English efficiently, you can have a widespread variety of career that can be offer to you. You might be able to find other career path if the one that you are doing giving you troubles or problems. Its all depend on yours desire for career advancement or personal satisfaction. With English as your rabbits foot you can find many job anywhere in the world. The path has open-up wide open for you to choose. In business and in the workplace, on the domestic front and in our social lives, we all stand to benefit from more effective communication skills. Communication difficulties can make us and our workplaces out of energy and productivity. Many employers expect their workforce to have excellent English communication skills in addition to the knowledge and expertise they have in their particular technical field. The ability to have clear and effective English communication skills in the workplace with clients, customers and colleagues is therefore the key for business success. It such an important forte for the use of oral Englishs to make the job run smoothly without a fuss. There for it can improve not only the productivities even it can be effective. In running a business, efficiency is the key to every success whether in financially, resource management, even in daily task. Everything should be going without a hindrance. It goes to with speaking fluently in English, so every task and every problem can be done effectively. If you have the ability to speak fluently, youll definitely in the front-runner to get promoted or

even be offer job overseas with even better pay job. You definitely are going to involve in an international negotiation for the company as you has the ability not only effectively but fluently. More people will recognize you as you are an international level just because you can speak fluently and effectively. Youll become the worldwide brand for your knowledge and skills just because you can speak effective English. Conclusion From my point of view, if you own a business, your public speaking skills can help you tremendously. Local, regional and national conferences are always looking for entrepreneurs that can educate and entertain an audience, as are service clubs and non-profits. Remember, the sweetest sound to an entrepreneur is their name on someone elses lips. The more people you speak to, the more people that is aware of you and your brand. Youll be able to pitch your products and ideas to larger audiences. Youll be invited to speak at conferences, share your knowledge in workshops and address audiences full of people that can buy your product. If you get really good at it, you can even make money speaking or barter for referrals and publicity just like Donald Trump. There are many reasons as to why studying English is important. One is being that you sound more educated and literate, two is to communicate properly with others, and three because it is important for career advancement and respect in the business world. If you can find Englishs as something that is fun and worth full, success seemed in the bag for you in the future. It is you who can make the different. I knew you'd succeed. As the saying goes, "cream rises to the top!"
