THERMAL ENERGY STORAGE TES

Ice Cell

INTRODUCTION
Thermal energy storage is a method that store thermal energy in energy storage reservoirs for later use It works by creating ice at night when electricity is usually less costly, and then using the ice to cool the air in buildings during the hotter daytime periods. Thermal energy storage is practical because the large fusion of heat of water. One metric ton of water, one cubic meter, can store 334 million joules (MJ) or 317,000 BTUs (93kWh or 26.4 tonhours)

The advantages of thermal energy storage are Commercial electrical rates are lower at night It takes less energy to make ice when the ambient temperature is cool at night. Source energy (energy from the chiller) is saved. A smaller, more efficient system can do the job of a much larger unit by running for more hours.

OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE

Plan capacity: 3600 Rt equal to 2 chiller Best mode @ discharge: 1 chiller/ 1800 Rt & 1 comp/900 Rt Ice mode @ charging: 1 chiller/ 1250 Rt & 1 comp/625 Rt Ice cell stores capacity: 10800 Rth= 45 tanks 1 tank= 240 Rt. Charging capacity chiller: 1250Rt X 10 hours = 12500 Rth Min ice cell: 10800 Rth Discharge; building load: 3585Rt x 0.8 =2868 Rt

Total cooling demand= 2858 Rt x 10 hours x 0.75 = 21500 Rth [1 day] Best mode; 1 chiller x 10 hours= 18000 Rt Sport building: 18000+ 10800=28800Rth Total sport building total building= 28800 - 21500=7290 Rth/ 25%. MAINTENANCE
Daily inspection Monitor and record chiller operating parameters in a log sheet. Any discrepancy in the way the chiller behave scan be identified and immediate measures can be taken to prevent unforeseen damage the chiller.

Monthly inspection. Check cooling tower water treatment system Check unit for traces of oil stain and refrigerant leakage Check glycol concentration Check liquid sight glasses for proper refrigerant charge Check sump oil level

Check pressure drop across oil filters Check motor bearings and lubricate as necessary Check water flow switch and pump interlock for functionality Check compressor and refrigerant piping for excessive vibration Shut unit down, open main disconnect, inspect control panel, checking for loose wires, burned contacts, signs of overheated wires, etc. Check and verify the functionality of all safety cutout devices where applicable.

Yearly inspection Perform monthly inspection Carryout a thorough refrigerant leak test Check compressor oil for acidity, moisture content and dissolved solids. Replace compressor oil as necessary. Do not charge the system with excess oil. Please refer to the specific type of compressor oil as listed on the chiller nameplate or on the housing of the compressor. Check liquid line sight glass for indication of excessive moisture content and filter drier for excessive pressure drop. Replace filter drier as necessary. Check alignment of shaft and coupling. Check shaft seal for excessive oil leakage.
