Welcome Back!
I want to take this opportunity to welcome the new families to Madison and also welcome back returning families! We are going to have a great year in fifth grade. Each month you will be receiving this newsletter (either through paper, email, or checking the class blog) that will give you a preview of the month to come. I will always leave my contact information in the bottom left corner so its easy to get a hold of me. MATH: This month in math well be starting with chapter one. We are going to focus on the concept of Numbers and Operations. Some topics in this chapter include: arrays, factors, divisibility rules, and multiplication strategies. READING: The majority of the month will be spent on preparing students to take the MEAP test in October. Well be demonstrating test taking strategies and taking several practice tests before the MEAP test. Reading is a 90-minute block this year. These 90 minutes will include read-aloud, spelling, a reading lesson, silent reading time, and response to reading. See the box below for more information on spelling. WRITING: Were going to start the year off with the Writing Diner. I think a lot of students will be familiar with these strategies, so were hoping to cruise through them! In the Writing Diner well learn how to make narrative stories better! The stories will start with strong leads, continue with more details, and end with exciting endings! SOCIAL STUDIES: We will start the year by learning all about maps. Well talk about hemispheres, latitude, longitude and physical features. The

Spelling
Spelling will be differentiated this year into 3 or 4 groups based on spelling ability. Spelling will start the week of September 19th. The word lists will last for 2 weeks therefore tests will be every other week and homework will be due every other week. Look for more information next week!

Reading HW
Every night students are required to read a minimum of thirty minutes. I encourage you to try to read WITH your student at least once during the week. This will help you monitor their progress at home. They should be recording their reading on their reading log which is in their HOME Binder. Thank you!
