Instructor Details MEMB263: Theory of Machines

Department of Mechanical Engineering Name: Mohd. Hafiz Hasan Email: mhafiz@uniten.edu.my Room #: BN-1-052 Phone #: 03-8921 2020 ext. 6048 Office hours: Tuesday & Thursday 9 am 11 am, or by appointment

Theory of Machines???
Synthesis and analysis of mechanisms
Synthesis: Design something to achieve a specific purpose Analysis: Determine position, velocity, acceleration and forces

Examples of Mechanisms

Mechanism
A system of elements arranged to transmit motion in a predetermined fashion A group of links connected by joints Sometimes called a linkage (used interchangeably)

Machine
Replace motion with motion and energy

Examples of Mechanisms Computer Models of Sample Mechanisms

TextBook and WebPage

Kinematics and Dynamics of Machinery, Robert L. Norton, 1st Edition in SI Units, Mc-Graw Hill, 2009. http://metalab.uniten. edu.my/~mhafiz/MEM B263/ (case sensitive!!!)

Old TextBook (also OK!)

Design of Machinery: An Introduction to the Synthesis and Analysis of Mechanisms and Machines, by Robert L. Norton, 3rd International Edition, McGraw Hill, 2004. Almost exactly the same as the new textbook, so can be used interchangeably

Course Prerequisite
MEMB233: Mechanics II: Dynamics My prerequisites: You should know how to:
Perform basic differentiation and integration Draw a Free Body Diagram

My Opinion of What an Engineer Should Be

An engineer should NOT have to memorize ANYTHING Working in teams should be second nature to an engineer. An engineer should be prepared to fire up a computer program to solve a problem at a moments notice.

As a Result of That, What You Can Expect from this Course

Open book, open notes, open everything for quizzes, tests and exams Working in teams for all assignments (excluding quizzes, tests and exam) Exposure to computer programs and mathematical tools
Mechanism simulation: Working Model, SAM, ADAMS, Pro/Engineer Mathematical tools: Maple, Matlab, Excel
1.
