MM212 0902 Project KEYS Project 1 A Review of Basic Algebra Please read and follow all of the instructions

below. General Instructions:

Type all work on this document. Leave all instructions, problems, font, color, and size intact. Save as a Microsoft Word document using the naming convention stated in your syllabus. Show your work. Type each new line of work under the previous one. Each line should includeat mostone equals sign. Do begin a new line with an equals sign if the expression that follows is equivalent to the one above. Do NOT begin a new line with an equals sign if the expression that follows is NOT equivalent to the one above, if the line is an equation, or if the line is an inequality. Conclude with your final answer(s), presented in the appropriate format. Always reduce final answers to lowest terms and simplify all signs. Completely simplify all final answers and combine all like terms. Unless decimals are in the original problem, no work or answers should be presented in decimal form. (Exception: scientific notation.) Present all partial numbers as proper fractions. Present all mixed numbers as improper fractions. If typing horizontally, type parentheses around: All fractional coefficients [For example: (1/2)x; (4/3)y2] All numerators and denominators longer than one term [For example (x 2)/6; -7/(y + 3); (x 6)/(x + 5)] All fractions being multiplied or divided [For example: (4/5)(2/9); (2/3) (-3/4)] All negative divisors [For example: 15/(-3); -x/(-1)] All negative terms that follow an addition or subtraction sign [For example: -8 + (-9); 3 (-6)] Assume that all variables in any denominator are nonzero. Use superscript to format all exponents. [For example: three to the fourth power is 34] Trinomials should have all single connecting signs and be arranged in descending order with positive leading variable terms in final answers and prior to factoring. [For example: 3x2 + 4x - 3; -(2x2 + 7x - 15)] Binomials must be written with positive leading variable terms when written as factors. [For example: (3x - 2)(x + 4); -(4x + y)(x - y)] Use subscript to format all subscripted labels. [For example: x with a subscripted 2 is x2] Express all answers with positive exponents. Evaluate exponents when possible. Present all radicals beginning with the symbol. Type [ ] around the entire radicand. [For example: [13]; [x + 3]; [x2 4x + 7]] Whenever a formula is used, begin by typing the formula you intend to use.

If a problem begins with units, the final answer should also include the proper units. In this class we do NOT use the 'x' to denote multiplication with the exception of Scientific Notation which requires the x. Instead, please use * or ( ) to present multiplication. Review all your work before submitting this Project. Typographical errors, incorrect formatting, typing words where symbols belong, and so on, are all mistakes and will be graded as such.

As mentioned above in the General Instructions, make sure to type new lines of work UNDER the previous ones. Use an equal sign (=) to lead off lines when simplifying/evaluating expressions to show that each line is equivalent to the one directly above. 1. Fill in the blank with the appropriate inequality symbol (either < or >). Show work that supports your conclusion. 13/16 __>_ 3/4 13/16= 0.8125 3/4= 0.75 0.8125 > 0.75 Answer: 13/16 > 3/4 2. Simplify; all work and answer must be in fractional form: (1/3)(3/4) + (-2/5)2 = (1/4) + (-2/5)2 = (1/4) + (4/25) = (25/100) + (16/100) 3. Simplify: - 9 - 3[4 - 9] (- 3) = -9 3(-5) (-3) = -9 (-15) (-3) = -9 - 5 4. Simplify: 12 [100] + 92 = 12 10 + 92 = 12 10 + 81 5. Evaluate 4x y when x = -3 and y = -7. = 4(-3) (-7) = -12 (-7) = -12 + 7 = -5 6. Grade the following problem: The problem below may contain both formatting and concept errors. 'Grade' this problem as if you were the instructor. Point out the formatting and concept errors that were made and state why the term, step or formatting was incorrect. In your grading, refer to specific concepts, steps, rules and/or project instructions that were not followed. Write your comments and the specific error(s) under each line of work where the error(s) occur(s). If the previous line contains no new errors, then write 'No Error' under it. Be very clear with your explanations. If an error appears multiple times or results in
