Cancer of Cervix ( cervical cancer ) has become the second most common type of cancer in women after Breast Cancer. An estimated 500,000 women in the world are diagnosed with cervical cancer each year. CERVICAL cancer kills an estimated 274,000 women annually. In United States alone, American Cancer Society reported that, women affected by cervical cancer has risen to more than 10,520 cases in 2005 and the death rate is about 40%, which means that around 4,000 women are expected to die of cervical cancer in 2005.

What Is Cervical Cancer ?

The cervix located at top of vagina and serves as the entrance to womb. Cervix will expand during childbirth until its wide enough to let the baby out. Cervical cancer is a disease in which cancerous cell are found in tissue of cervix. A normal healthy cervix is pink in color and covered with squamous cells(scale-like cells) and columnar cells are fond in cervical canal. These columnar cells are vulnerable and can be easily inflamed than squamous cells. The problematic areas are situated at the areas where both cells meet, its often called the squamocolumnar junction and transformationzone or T-Zone ) The T-Zone, with columnar cells easily susceptible to inflammation or infection, are the areas that abnormal cells are most likely to develop.

HPV is a strains of viruses that cause wart or papillomasbenign ( non-cancerous ) tumor. There are at least 100 types of HPV, about 40 types of HPV are transmitted during sexual intercourse, and only a handful of HPV can cause cervical cancer. HPV is the most common virus in existence and its estimated that there are 50 million people infected with HPV. In United States alone, it is reported as many as 20 million Americans estimated to be infected with the genital form of HPV. HPV is spread by skin to skin contact wit HPV infected areas. Usually, HPV doesnt cause any symptoms. This is why so many people with HPV do not know they have it or that HPV could spread, as a matter of fact, it could take months or even years for genital warts to surface after sexual intercourse with HPV infected partner. Using condom doesnt help stop HPV infection, because HPV is spread trough skin to skin contact, this may not be effectively protected by condom. In women, HPV can cause warts in areas like vagina, cervix, vulva, anal areas, groins. What Are The Development Stages Of Cervical Cancer ?

Cervical cancer normally develops in three stages. Stage 1 It is also called CIN1 which implies that the cells on the cervix is slightly abnormal. Stage 2 CIN2, it is not cancerous, but the cells on the surface of the cervix start to show some cancer-like hanges which can be seen under the microscope. Stage 3 CIN3, is very close to cancer. It is known as carcinoma in situ . CIN3 represent a warning signal to those who leave it untreated. Because more than 50% of those in CIN3 stage develop into full blown cancer. From the above, we can see that being in those 3 stages is not fatal as there can be diagnosed and easily treated.

Most of the infection do not show any signs or symptoms. The good news is, it is rather rare for HPV infection to progress to cancer with proper treatment.
