Designed sound means that the audio system is trimmed to
suit the acoustics in each specific Volvo model. The radio,
amplifier, loudspeakers – all the components are designed
down to the smallest detail to offer exactly the right
characteristics needed to produce the most natural sound
possible in your Volvo.
For example, every radio has a built-in equalizer where
the sound curve from the deepest bass to the highest
treble is set separately to suit each individual Volvo model.
And every loudspeaker’s magnet, cone, suspension and
other details are specially designed to suit the specific
location for which it is intended.
Loudspeaker location is an engineering parameter that
is already taken into consideration when the car is at the
design stage, and it is optimised to provide perfect stereo
sound reproduction in the passenger compartment. Ad-
vanced sound measurement and hour after hour of listening
provide invaluable input before the final format of the audio
system is decided for each car model.
In addition, the audio system’s appearance harmonises
perfectly with the interior design. And of course, advanced
electronic systems are utilised fully in your Volvo*. They

Reproducing natural sound in a car is a major chal-
lenge. With loudspeakers installed in the doors, for
instance, not all the car's occupants will perceive the
same sound in the same way. Dolby Surround Pro
Logic* with its centre loudspeaker solves that problem
by recreating the movement of sound as it is perceived
at source. You will perceive the music equally clearly
whether you are behind the wheel or in the passenger
seat.

 Several of the audio systems in the HU
series can be controlled without taking your
hand off the steering wheel. You can adjust
volume, switch radio stations and change to
the next or previous track on the CD without
taking your hands off the wheel.

Volvo’s attention to safety naturally encompasses the

audio system too. You should be able to change stations
and adjust the sound quality without being distracted
from the road. What is more, all the audio equipment is
thoroughly crash-tested so we know that it conforms to
Volvo’s stringent safety standards. And of course, attention
to safety also includes attention to anti-theft security
– your audio system should remain just that: yours.

Full control Crash-tested equipment

The audio system in your Volvo does not only sound fantastic,
it also gives you access to the latest traffic information so that
you can avoid tailbacks and other obstacles. The RDS radio
has features such as traffic information priority, programme type
monitoring, autostore and much more. With RDS, you do
not need to change frequency while you drive – the radio auto-
matically switches to the most powerful transmitter for the
station you have selected.
Large, easy to handle controls allow you to concentrate on
your driving. What is more, several of our audio systems have
controls in the steering wheel. Some of them even adjust
volume automatically to suit your speed, and lower volume
automatically when the car phone is in use.
Volvo’s aerials are tailored to give the best reception in your
Volvo. Some of the radios have a Diversity aerial that minimises
interference in all reception conditions.
All the components in Volvo’s audio systems meet Volvo’s
stringent safety requirements. They have been crash-tested in
every Volvo model to ensure that they do not splinter or break
away in a collision. One example of attention to safety is that
the CD tray automatically retracts if you do not remove the
disc from the CD player within 12 seconds after the Eject
button is pressed.
Anti-theft protection
The anti-theft protection with which our audio systems are
fitted is designed to make life so difficult for the would-be thief
that he would rather give your car and audio equipment a
wide berth. That is why the radios in the HU series, for instance,
only function in the Volvo car in which they were originally
installed. What is more, they are fully integrated into the
instrument panel, so they are very difficult indeed to steal.
Volvo’s other radio units feature an anti-theft code or a remov-
able keypad – or both.

A separate amplifier with a powerful
output allows you to enjoy even better
sound quality, since you can turn up the
volume and listen to music with a wide
dynamic range (in other words, music
with a wide difference between the loud
and quiet passages) and still have very
little distortion.
A separate CD changer allows you to
switch between several discs. Volvo’s
CD changers are easy to operate from
the radio’s control panel – just touch a
button to change discs. You can play the
discs in sequence, you can select the disc
and track of your choice or let the system
choose a track at random.
In order to be able to use a separate
amplifier or CD changer, the radio must
be equipped with special outputs.
