Michael Bar-Zohar Friday, October 28 at 6:00pm The Arab Spring and Israel: Where Are We Today?
Is the Arab spring a success - or a failure? Are the protests in Egypt, Tunisia and Yemen about democracy - or about food? Is real democracy in the Middle East viable or is it a faraway goal? Come hear author, soldier and legislator Michael Bar-Zohar share his insights on the state of democracy in the Middle East. Co-Sponsored by the Israel Involvement Committee

Ori Soltes Friday, November 11 at 6:00 pm Lost and (Sometimes) Found: Nazi-Plundered Art
Ori Soltes is Professorial Lecturer in Theology and Fine Arts at Georgetown University and former Director of the Bnai Brith Klutznick National Jewish Museum in Washington, DC. As the co-founder and chairman of the Holocaust Art Restitution Project, he has conducted research on behalf of museums and individuals with claims for the return of art that was plundered by the Nazis. Professor Soltes is the author of nearly 200 books, articles, exhibition catalogues and essays on a variety of subjects. It is said that as much as one-fifth of the worlds art changed hands during World War II, mostly at the hands of the Nazis. Why and how did the Nazi regime plunder so much art, mostly from Jews? What was the process of trying to return it to its owners after the war and how and why did that effort virtually disappear by the end of the 1950sand how did it re-emerge by the late 1990s? What have been the challenges and some of the signal successes and failures in the struggle to restore works of art, some invaluable, many only valuable as family heirlooms to the victims from whom they were stolen or their heirs? Co-Sponsored by The Renaissance Group

The Presidents Point of View

The summer of 2011 in the halls of Government in Washington, D.C. will long be remembered as a time when Republicans and Democrats were incapable of agreeing on anything. This gridlock has gone on for years now but months of drama over the debt ceiling has just made matters worse. There has just been one issue that Republicans and Democrats have uniformly and consistently agreed upon: support for the State of Israel. This year, the Unites States provided over $3 billion in aid to Israel. Support for this aid was almost unanimous among both Republican and Democrats. The reality is that no matter how much money is raised through the efforts of the United Jewish Appeal and other organizations, these dollars are relatively small in comparison to the Americas annual commitment. How is it that Congressman from districts where there is virtually no Jewish population, become ardent supporters of Israel? There are many reasons Im sure, but certainly a leading factor in the efforts of pro-Israel lobbies, the largest being AIPAC. When virtually every Senator and Congressman makes a personal appearance at AIPACs annual policy conference, you understand the enormous reach and influence of the lobby. Congresss traditional support for Israel should not, however, be taken for granted. There are winds of change in the air. The need to reduce the federal deficit is causing some legislators to look closely at foreign aid. Some of the new members of Congress do not believe, as a matter of philosophy, in foreign aid. Sooner or later, some legislator will challenge Americas financial support to Israel. American Jews have a special place in our hearts for Israel. We support Israel in many ways; our UJA gift, the planting of trees in Israel, a family trip or a birthright trip for our children. But, if we have not done so already, we need to find a place to support the efforts to continue Americas strong support for Israel. We can do this by supporting lobbying groups such as AIPAC. We can also write to our legislators and ask for their continued support. This may be the most important thing we can do to help maintain the existence and security of Israel. Israel has survived wars and intifadas but never in my lifetime has Israel seemed so isolated. The Arab spring has put into question the continued viability of the Israel-Egypt peace treaty. The Palestinian application for Statehood made to the United Nations had drawn world wide support. The efforts at delegitimization of Israel are all around us. Only the United States stands by Israel during this difficult time. If this support is to continue, Israel needs each and everyone of us to help insure Americas continued commitment. This is no time for any of us to sit on the sidelines.

From the Rabbis Study

I am writing this bulletin article a few days before the Palestinians plan to unilaterally announce statehood. That means that by the time this bulletin is published, much will have changed in the Middle East landscape. And as I write this, it unclear what will unfold in the coming days and weeks. What is clear however, and will be the case regardless of what happens over the next weeks, is that this is a truly precarious time for the Jewish state. The so-called Arab Spring has not yielded much of a move toward the hoped-for democracy. Egypt, once an ally, albeit a cold one, now has individuals storming the Israeli embassy. Turkey, once one of Israels closest allies, now sees growing antagonism. And at every turn, the process of working to delegitimize Israel continues to grow. It is not a good time for the Jewish State. Now more than ever it is important that we know what is going on, what we can do, and how to make our voices heard. A few suggestions on where to start: 1. Between the morning and afternoon services on Yom Kippur, Temple member and AIPAC Northeast Regional Director Michael Sachs will once again give us an update on Israel. Here is an opportunity to hear from one of the most knowledgeable individuals in our community with regard to what is taking place and the ways in which we can help. Thank you Mike! 2. Join me on October 16 for the Stand Up for Israel Rally. We have our 5K run that morning at 9:30. I will be participating in it and then heading straight to the event. If you plan on attending the 5K please join me. Well arrive a bit late, but there will still be a great deal to learn and do. If you are not participating in the 5K please make plans to be there the entire time. If youd like to stay closer to home you can learn more about the medias bias toward Israel by attending an outstanding talk by Gary Kenzer sponsored by Renaissance Group and the Israel Involvement Committee here at TSTI at 2:00 P.M. 3. Join a pro-Israel group (or two or three). Join AIPAC, J-Street, ARZA... join and get involved with an organization that is committed to the Jewish State. 4. Read sources that offer insight, analysis, and can recommend ways to get involved. We have a list of such sources on the Temple website and, as often as possible, we link to the articles

The Iris Family

Linda and Rudy Slucker Religious School

Change is hard for many while new beginnings are exciting for others. Some of us go kicking and screaming into the unknown and others jump in head first. There are times we might want to take on a new challenge alone and other times we may need a partner or small group to join us. Some people want to look for a new job while others are forced into the situation. For myself, I am usually the jump-in-head-first-go-it-alone person who just happens to attract the kicking-and-screamingIm-not-so-sure-about-this friend. This has happened quite often actuallyits how Ive managed to convince my co-worker, Andrea Dean, to volunteer to be my coteacher in the Religious School kindergarten class. Im sure I made it sound like an easy job and talked to her about the extra money to help pay for her babys childcare fees. Pretty soon the 2 hour commute, the cost of gas and the extra planning and reporting that go along with this job will far outweigh the promise of fun times working together, but I expect that by then, Andrea will have been hooked. Its also how I managed to excitedly mention to Rabbi Miller and 3 of the teachers in the preschool about the 3-day farm conference I spoke of in last months article, which, by the way, has taken on a life of its own. In early September the trainers came from Maryland to begin what will be a 10 month partnership with the Preschool and Religious School staff. In October a naturalist team from Nebraska will spend 2 days walking the fields and drawing up proposals for our property while also providing additional teacher training so can become a nationally certified outdoor classroom. Its the same influence that has allowed my son, Alex, the ability to decide to move to Florida for a job. Unfortunately it is also the reason that I volunteered to take the road trip with him. I had visions of mother-son bonding time. What I didnt factor in is just how much longer the trip feels when riding in a Jeep Wrangler with plastic windows and a soft top roof a day after hurricane Irene. Not only did we bounce around like a sailboat in high seas, the wind and residual rain storms made the noise level deafening; we could not hear each other speak unless we were yelling. At least we have the same taste in music and are both content with the volume on high.

Our Promise Tree has bloomed! As you enter the lobby by the Religious School Office, please take note of our amazing Promise Tree. As part of our Opening Day events, each student in the school was asked to write a promise of something they would do in the coming year to help make a difference to one person. As I read many of them, I was touched by the kindness and thoughtfulness that went into their writings. Please add you own wish to the tree- there is a container with the tools you need right by the tree. If you walked through the halls our halls on our first day, you heard students welcoming each other back, new students making new friends and our community strengthening. The first day has set the tone for an environment where every child is respected, celebrated for their unique qualities, and an integral part of our school community. During this year, we will be encouraging teamwork as well as kindness through some healthy competition. Our theme is Yad BYad, means hand in hand, and that is one way our children are going to learn this year. Each homeroom is going to be a Yad Squad, and they will compete with other classes in various areas: Shabbat Attendance, Hebrew reading at home, class behavior and teamwork on many projects. There will be a team prize at Chanukah, at the end of the year and small rewards in between! Our older students, which include Seventh Grade and up, will also participate in many new and challenging programs during the year. Watch the next e-blast for more details and please help support your students Yad Squad! LShalom,

Watch this space for details on our participation in the program. Cantor Aronson is taking the lead on this for TSTI and we need your involvement. The challenges to the Jewish state are great more so right now then perhaps at any time in recent memory. Israel is increasingly left standing alone with United States as her only ally. If we dont stand up for Israel who is going to? And, as the great teacher Hillel put it, If not now when?

As of this writing the first day of school begins in less than an hour and I know that there will be children who will enter our school excited to make new friends and there will also be those who come in kicking and screaming, literally. It is scary for many children and parents alike to start on this new adventure, but in a few weeks they will all settle in to a rhythm. My hope is that, like Andrea, once theyve been here awhile they will be hooked. Maybe they will be like my farm team and their classroom experience will take on a life of its own. I guarantee there will be bumps along the way when we all feel as though we wont be able to weather the storm but we will get through the highs and lows together, as part of Temple Sharey TefiloIsraels Iris Family Center.
