1993 Toyota Pickup Common Problems Brakes * The front brake rotors can wear causing a pulsation felt

in the brake peda l when it is applied. * Our technicians recommend flushing the brake fluid every 60,000 miles beca use the fluid can become dirty and may cause problems in the brake system such a s early failure of the master cylinder or wheel cylinders. * It is very important that the rear level sensor is properly bled after any brake work or the rear brake stopping efficiency may be compromised. * The ABS wheel speed sensors have have a tendency wear out and set codes at higher mileages. It is recommended to replace them with factory parts and be su re to clean all rust and debris from the mounting areas or the new sensors may s et false codes because the mounting distance is critical. Be sure and check the condition and runout of the wheel bearings and the CV joints. This is because wo rn wheel bearings and/or CV joints can cause the ABS trigger rings to rub agains t the ABS sensors and damage them. Drive Train * At higher mileages, (125,000-150,000) the automatic transmissions may not shift correctly. This can be caused by the Throttle Position Sensor being out of adjustment or a shift solenoid needing to be replaced. Typically the transmissi on does not need to be completely overhauled. * On vehicles with manual transmissions, worn shift bushings can cause the v ehicle to pop out of gear, especially when coasting down in 1st or 2nd gear. Rep lacing all the shift linkage bushings is pretty straight forward and not expensi ve. Engine * It is important to regularly check the valve clearance as the exhaust valv es may become too tight. This will lead to valve failures, which are expensive t o repair. * At higher mileages (125,000+) the Mass Air Flow Sensor may cause the vehic le to idle rough, run rich and even stall. Our technicians recommended to replac e the Mass Air Flow Sensor with a factory unit because the aftermarket units hav e very mixed results. * At higher mileages (125,000+) the Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor may in termittently stop working, especially when the vehicle is fully warmed up which can cause a stalling problem. * A loss of power on the freeway may due to an internally leaking fuel pulsa tion dampener on higher mileage vehicles. 2.4L 4 cylinder * The timing chain can develop a rattling noise caused by failing timing cha in guides. This is often due to extended mileage intervals between oil changes t hat allows the oil to become dirty and abrasive which wears away the timing chai n guides until they fail. The timing chain must be inspected and adjusted at eac h valve adjustment, otherwise serious engine damage may result. * The Ignition Coil wire insulation is often rubbed through by the Primary w iring harness which will cause a stalling/no-start condition. The coil wire will need to be replaced and the primary harness will need to be repaired and re-rou ted. 3.0L V6 This engine can be prone to leaks in the head gasket after as little as 60,000 m

iles. When the head gasket is replaced, the knock sensor harness should be repla ced as well, as it can be damaged by leaky head gaskets, resulting in a serious decrease in fuel efficiency or in long term engine damage. Exhaust & Emissions * The EGR System tends to get restricted or blocked with carbon after 100,00 0- 125,000 miles which will cause an emissions test failure for NOX. If the EGR system is equipped with an EGR temperature sensor it will trigger a Check Engine Light for improper EGR flow. The repair is to clean out the EGR passages and to clean off the EGR Temperature sensor. Our technicians tell this repair is all p retty straight forward and takes about 1-1.5 hours. * By the time the EGR system is plugged, the Oxygen Sensor is getting slow o r 'lazy'. When servicing or cleaning the EGR system, it is a good idea to repla ce the Oxygen sensor because it works in tandem with the EGR system. * The Throttle Position Sensor can get out of adjustment due to wear in the throttle body or due to carbon build up. This will cause the idle timing to adva nce more than 30 degrees which will cause very high HC and NOx emissions. Conver sely, the Throttle Position Sensors can wear out and not properly advance the ti ming which causes a lack of power and poor fuel economy. * A rough idle and even an emissions inspection failure for high HCs and CO can be caused by improperly adjusted valves. Our technicians remind us that regu lar valve adjustment inspections are a must. Electrical & Lights If the vehicle will not crank over, the most common prob lem is the starter, which tend to fail at about 100,00-125,000 miles. Sometimes it is only the starter solenoid contacts, but often the complete starter (includ ing solenoid) needs to be replaced. Miscellaneous Our technicians report that by 100,000 miles, the ignition key t ends to wear out and should be replaced or it may not work as well in the door l ocks or ignition lock cylinder. Suspension & Steering * At higher mileages (125,000-150,000) the input shaft seal to the power ste ering gear box may leak on the 6 cylinder vehicles. Our technicians recommend to replace the steering box with a quality rebuilt or new unit rather than attempt to re-seal the original unit. * At higher mileages (125,000 -150,000) the power steering pump may begin to leak on the 6 cylinder vehicles and could need replacing. Heating & Air Conditioning * Usually by 150,000 miles the A/C system will need some attention, especial ly in climates where it is used often. Our technicians tell us that it is best t o service the A/C system every 2-3 years. This keeps the moisture in the system at a minimum which extends the life of the components * Typically the A/C compressor is worn out by about 150,000 miles in warm an d/or humid climates. It is recommended to replace the complete compressor includ ing a new clutch and rpm sensor and to replace the receiver/dryer as well. * The A/C Expansion Valves have a tendency to have very slow leaks or allow too much refrigerant flow which reduces cooling. Our technicians tell us that To yota makes an updated Expansion Valve to resolve these problems if and when they occur
