IMPORTANT POINTS FOR A BAAL TOKEA

HOW TO BLOW SHOFAR PROPERLY
Shvorim-trua
vgur, ohrca

1) In the main shofar blowing before musaf in the sequence of tkeeya-shvorim-trua-tkeeya, the shvorim-trua should be blown in a single breath. e same applies when one blows to enable someone else to fulll the mitzva (such as at home for family members, or on mivtzaim). However the shofar which is blown by mussaf is done with a breath in between the shvorim-trua. 2) When blowing shvorim-trua, it happens that, instead of blowing the third shever (the third blast of the shvorim), the blower blows only a half shever (as is customary to blow after all three shvorim), completely leaving out the third shever and going from the second shever straight to the trua. In such a case, the mitzva has not been fullled, and one must blow again starting from the tkeeya before the shvorim-trua.

3) e tkeeya before and after shvorim-trua must last at least as long as 18 short trua blasts. e rst and last tkiya of each line of the tkeeya-shvorim-tkeeya and tkeeya-trua-tkeeya sequences must last at least as long as nine short trua blasts.

4) Each of the three blasts of the shvorim must last at least as long as the three short trua blasts, but not as long as the nine short trua blasts. If even one of the three shvorim blasts lasts as long as the nine short trua blasts, the mitzva has not been fullled and one must blow again preferbly starting from that shvorim. Lichatchila (in the rst place) one should be careful about this also in the tkeeya-shvorim-trua-tkeeya sequence that each shever should not to be as long as nine trua blasts. By shvorim-trua preferably each shever should be less then six trua blasts. 5) Between every tkeeya and shvorim or tkeeya and trua whether after or before it, one must separate them by taking a short breath. In the tkiya-shvorim-tkeeya sequence, it may occur that it is all done in one breath. According to the Alter Rebbe, if one did not take a breath after or before the tkeeya, he has to repeat that line of tkeeya-shvorim-tkeeya. 6) One who has already fullled his obligation of hearing the shofar, and now wants to blow for others to fulll the mitzva, the person listening says the brochos (blessings) before the shofar is blown. If the person listening is a male and cannot say the brochos himself, then the one blowing shofar for him says the brochos, and the listener answers Omein. One who blows shofar for a woman who cannot say the brochos herself, then he should blow for her without reciting any brochos at all.
