Pet training becomes easier with crate training as it serves as a first step and a solid foundation on which other pet training steps can be built upon. First, to clarify a crate is not a prison for dogs as many think it is. A crate is a den, may be a cage, proportionately small, secure and welldefined place your dog or puppy can call his/her own. A place where he/she feels instinctively secure and a place they avoid dirtying. If you introduce your dog to a crate/cage in a positive way you will be giving yourself and your dog a helpful tool and spare yourself from a lot of inconvenience had you done otherwise. The benefits to crate training as pet training aids are many but the most important one for a lot of pet owners is that it can prevent annoying behaviors from developing such as destructive chewing. When inside his/her crate, your pet cannot chew on your furniture, shoes or clothes. What he can do is chew on toys which you have carefully chosen for him or he can take a nap. Potty-training also becomes easier with crate training since dogs normally will not soil their space. They wont eliminate in the area where they sleep, with some exceptions. However, puppies have small bladders so accidents do happen especially if they have been left alone for hours on stretch. A crate/cage isnt meant as a fail-safe solution, but it does help significantly speed up the pottytraining process of pet training.

Crate serves as a sheltered and secure place. Dogs by nature are denning animals. Dogs have a natural predisposition to create hideouts to retreat to. Thats why they often sleep under sofas, tables, even blankets, and why they often try to dig up flooring before settling in for a nap. By providing a crate/cage as pet training aids, youll be giving him the den he is looking for. In fact, new owners are pleasantly surprised to see their pets going into their cages voluntarily as the denning instinct sets in. Dogs love predictability. Crate training can enable owners to set routines such as feeding time, nap, etc. Crates also have a calming effect on dogs especially if they are left in spacious and unfamiliar spaces. They become less fearful and anxious when they have their own space to retreat to. Its completely understandable that a new pet owner would feel guilty at the thought leaving his pet in a crate/cage. But dogs feel safer and more secure when in their own den. They are less prone to make messes, chew things up, or suffer from separation anxiety. The benefits of crate training a dog are evident and pet owners would soon find out that when done correctly crate pet training is a great way of pet training.

One of the greatest joys we can experience in our lives is opening our homes and hearts to a pet. I have owned dogs my entire life, and cant imagine ever being without at least one canine companion. My family simply wouldnt be complete. I know a lot of other folks feel the same way, and plenty more are heading down that road for the first time as they welcome a new puppy into their world.

There are lots of different things a first-time owner needs to know about pups, but whenever anyone asks me for advice, I always give the same answer. Its important for owners to learn about the benefits of crate training a dog, (it is a type of pet training aid) and begin the process as soon as possible. I realize it can be a bit difficult for people to confine their puppy to a cage, especially when the little guy starts whimpering to be let out. But experts agree that crate training a dog is one of the most responsible steps you can take to provide a safe, secure environment for your furry friend. Once you get over the initial Aw, poor thing! reaction to the idea of crate training a dog, youll see that this technique actually has a number of benefits. Dogs have a natural instinct to create dens to retreat to. Thats why they often like to sleep under chairs, tables, and blankets, and why they often try to dig up carpets or flooring before settling in for a nap. By crate pet training a dog, youll be giving him the den he craves. In fact, new owners often express surprise that

their pets soon start going into their cages voluntarily but thats just the den instinct kicking in. Another benefit to crate training a dog and the one that most owners appreciate right off the bat is that dogs wont eliminate in the area where they sleep. This can help immensely when youre trying to potty train your little guy, and will minimize accidents and messes on carpeting or furniture. Of course, puppies have small bladders and cant always control what happens (especially if youre gone for eight straight hours or something), so a cage isnt meant to be a magical solution, but it does help significantly speed up the pet training for housebreaking process. I know plenty of owners who wont even attempt housebreaking without using a kennel. Its completely understandable that a new pet owner would balk at the thought of crate training a dog. But the truth of the matter is that dogs often do much better when confined to a smaller area than when they have the run of the entire house. They feel safer and more secure when in their own den, and are less likely to make messes, chew things up, or suffer from separation anxiety. The benefits of crate training a dog are obvious. Please consider doing this for your pup when doing pet training!

When you think of aggressive puppies, the thought may come with a negative connotation. Certain breeds are known to be more aggressive than others. For example, German Shepherds and Dobermans are typically more aggressive than, say, Setters. Then again, looking on the flip side, you could also say that the more aggressive breeds are also more protective than that dog with the ultra-laid-back personality in his genes. Then you need to consider the individual personality of whatever breed of dog youve chosen to join your household. So, if your little pooch seems to be one of those aggressive puppies, weve got some tips on taming that aggressive little guy or gal. With the right handling and pet training, you can turn that aggressive personality into an asset. Youll end up with a bon vivant pet who is also a great watchdog. Lets take a look. If youve got kids in your household, or kids that visit your home often, its essential that you tackle the aggressive puppies syndrome right from the start. Most vets and trainers recommend that you begin pet training between the ages of 3-4 months. This is sound advice, in terms of teaching the sit, stay and heel type commands. Puppies arent yet disciplined enough to successfully learn these more sophisticated canine concepts until theyre about 3-4 months in age.

However, aggressive puppies can begin their protective sweetheart training in your gentle, firm hands, almost from the day you bring that puppy home. Keep in mind the exercise factor. Puppies are naturally rambunctious and most need a regular schedule of vigorous exercise to work off all that excess energy. Lacking enough exercise, puppies of any breed or disposition are bound to direct that excess energy into, say, giving your nice leather slippers a workout they and you wont soon forget! Pet stores carry a variety of pet training aids such as leashes for young puppies. Ask one of the staff members for their recommendation on which training leash would be best for gently taming overly exuberant puppies. The leash should be of a soft material appropriate for a puppy. With aggressive puppies, its a good idea to acquaint them with that training leash at an early age. This doesnt mean you should have him, or her, on a leash 24/7. Set aside a convenient time each day to conduct your first training lessons. Start with about a half-hour each day, preferably after a meal (making your leash training do double-duty) to get your pup on board for both house training and simple lessons in acceptable versus non-acceptable behavior. You can walk around the house, issuing gentle no comments as appropriate. If he decides to lunge at your draperies, its an easy matter to let him know thats not OK. Just gently restrain him, without being harsh. After all, you want him to be protective of family members, developing those aggressive puppies tendencies in the right direction. After a meal is also a good time to take him for a walk, giving him a chance to work off both the meal and excess energy. Chances are good that hell then be ready for a little well-deserved nap! Gradually increase his pet training leash sessions to 2-3 times a day. Using this early training technique, employing a gentle, yet firm approach really works for both of you. Aggressive puppies tend to respond well to this disciplinary tactic, learning valuable lessons in a fun environment. Youll also find hell learn the fancy tricks (sit-stay-heel) much more quickly. Good luck on your pet training!

There is more misinformation about aggressive dogs than about nearly any other topic in canine care. Many people look at canine aggression as the product of certain bad breeds. Bull dogs, Rottweiler and certain other breeds are singled out and demonized as aggressive killer dogs. In reality, any dog can become aggressive (or at least, unpredictable) through improper care and any dog can be taught to behave itself if correctly trained and cared for via proper pet training. Certainly, breed and temperament play a role in things, but they hardly determine the dogs fate from the day he is born. Nurture is, overall, a bigger factor than nature. Both dog on human and dog on dog aggression have a lot to do with socialization. Young dogs need to spend time with humans, learning to interact and play. When they are puppies, they should be treated in a friendly manner and disciplined gently. As they get older, their owners need to be on the lookout for dominance behavior. Alpha dogs will try to establish dominance over family members to negotiate a better place in the pack. They may growl at certain family members as a way to defend a particular piece of territory, for example. When people allow this sort of aggressive behavior to happen, it can spiral out of control. If you dont direct an aggressive dog, it may eventually bite people as a way of asserting its dominance.

The best way to treat aggressive dogs is to conduct pet training on them thoroughly. Particularly if your dog has not been properly socialized as a pup, sending it to a pet training school can do wonders for its temperament. The dog will learn how to follow basic instructions and, more importantly, will grow to understand that it is never to act aggressively towards its owner, other people or other dogs. Knowing how to correct your own dog also makes a big difference. Praise your dog when it does something well, but correct it when it does something wrong. Dont strike your dog. Instead, say bad dog in an angry, loud voice and put it in a timeout area. Physically hurting your dog when it acts up is unnecessarily cruel. It can also make your dog fearful and anxious, which can lead it to lash out aggressively. Keep a cool head and a firm hand with your dog, and you will be able to teach your best friend to be cool-headed as well. Proper pet training takes a lot of work, but is well worth the effort when you get a calm, wellbehaved canine.

A recent trip to a local animal shelter made me realize just how many dogs there are out there that are in desperate need of a good home. If only we could all adopt a puppy, I think the world would be a much better place, and for more reasons than one. A puppy is perfect for pet training. Seeing so many dogs in those little cages absolutely broke my heart. As I strolled down one hallway in particular, six of the eight dogs were puppies, and I started to wonder how long they would be alive. As I passed each cage, they would all look up at me and start wagging their tails and whimpering. It was almost as if they sensed their impending fate and were pleading to be rescued. I decided then and there that I was going to help make a difference and adopt a puppy. Several years ago, I adopted a Scottish Terrier and Lhasa Apso mix and named him Mickey. He was a feisty little guy, but he was also very affectionate and protective. It took me a while to gain his trust, as it sometimes does when you adopt a puppy, but before long we were the best of friends. I had Mickey for almost 15 years before he passed away, and I was deeply hurt when he died. He enriched my life in so many ways, and his love was unconditional.

That is one of the best things about dogs they love you no matter what. I got Mickey when I was a teenager, and I learned so many things from having him. Having a dog taught me a sense of responsibility, because he was completely dependent upon me to provide him with everything. I also remained very active with him, because he was so full of energy and life. When we would go out into the back yard, we would play for hours sometimes. We bonded on a level that is hard to find anywhere else in life. When my son wanted to adopt a puppy a few months ago, I was very happy. There was no let us think about it, because my wife and I knew all of the wonderful things that come from owning a dog. We told him we could, but we had to go to the dog pound and pick one, not the local pet store. It was hard for my son to see all the puppies lined up, just as it was for me, and it made me feel good that he had developed such a sense of compassion. While he wanted to adopt them all, he finally chose one, and we took him home. His name is Roscoe. I think that if anyone wants to adopt a puppy, they should definitely do so. They are great companions, are very protective, obedient, and easy to train and provide you with more joy than you could possibly imagine. Most of all, they are the perfect animal for pet training.

Your pet dog deserves to be the best, and he can be one as long as you are giving him the proper training to be obedient. There are lots of pet training aids that can help you teach your dog to be obedient and performs in a particular command you give. In this endeavor, you need to give your dog the proper reward training that would be appropriate for him. Reward is given in the right time every correct performance he did, as well as the correction and reinforcement that are required for every incorrect action. In doing this, it is important for you to understand the reward schedule that is helpful for you as one of your pet training aids. Reward training is scheduled with the successive-approximation technique, which means that in every correct performance your dog exhibited, a corresponding reward is given. Reward in the form of praising or a normal tap on the dogs chest associated with the verbal praise of Good Boy! in an excited and appreciative tone of voice. This will be your pet training aid. A command is given in a distinctive single word such as SIT. Avoid giving your dog a confusing verbal command such as SIT DOWN because he can only

recognize the last word or syllable of your voice. Therefore, if you wanted to command your dog to sit, give the verbal command SIT. Reinforce the command with downward pressure on his hind part (ramp) and upper pull on the neck part (using the choking chain. Until he performs satisfactorily, reduce the pressure applied until eliminating one after the other, leaving him the cue of minor pull on the choking chain. You can notice that whenever he feels the choker to tighten up, he will perform the sitposition. Reward him by loosening it up and give the praising reward Good Boy!This reward schedule is applicable to every stimulus presented to him. Remember to give a distinctive verbal command while employing this as your pet training aid. Special tasking in your dogs obedience can be rewarded in another approach such as food reward or prey-kill. However, these are done in advance training such as in sniffing task or seeking or tracking. Food reward is particularly used in some police work task such as narcotic or explosive detection. While the prey-kill reward training is used during the controlled aggression training. The dog can have that bite on the decoy or the target whenever a desire performance was attained. Training your dog can be fun, but you need the right knowledge, sincere patience and constant practice with the use of the right pet training aids.

When you think about home pet training puppies, your first thoughts, and rightly so, are about training your puppy to go to the bathroom in the appropriate places and to leave your home free from urine and feces. However, there is more to training a dog than just teaching them to go outside when walked. You also have to train them to treat your home with respect and to behave for you and around anyone that may come into your home. A dog that feels his people are in charge is a happy dog, and a well-trained dog is a delight for any family. Home pet training puppies means teaching your pup that they are safe in the crate while you are away from home. Anyone who has gotten a puppy and then gone off to work with the pup free to roam the house soon learns that this is a huge problem. Puppies that are left alone in a new home (or even in a home they know well) can get lonely and may howl and whine and rip the house to shreds. Dogs love to chew and bite, but they have to be taught when these things are

15 | 2 0 1 1

appropriate and that your clothing, shoes, furniture, and drapes are off limits. A dog in a crate cannot do these things. A dog in a crate may also feel more secure because they are not left in a wide open space. Home training puppies to be in crates can be hard at first, but it is a must for a well behaved dog and a sense of peace while away from home. You will not worry about your dog while gone, and you know you can take them places too, because they can go some places in a crate they cannot go on a leash. If you love to travel by air, they will have to be crate trained. Find a good training book to help you with this task, as it can be hard and trying for both the dog and the person doing the training. Respecting you and our family, as well as any guests you have in your home, is another part of home pet training puppies. Young dogs love to bite, as it is just part of their nature. It is just like a human baby in that they do not know what they are doing is wrong or that it can hurt. They are just doing what feels natural. You do not want your dog biting you or your children, nor do you want them to bite anyone while you are walking them away from home. Nip the biting in the bud early and teach them the appropriate time to play. Though it may seem like a security issue to have your dog bark when someone knocks on the door or comes near the house, but this is not something you should have your dog do unless you are not home. Every single noise they hear will trigger loud barking, which is going to be annoying to you and your neighbors very quickly. Part of pet training puppies is to teach them early on that you do not need warned, but instead should be protective of the home when the family is sleeping or when you are away. Most pups can learn this easily and quickly, as long as you get a good pet training guide when your pup is very, very young and/or when new to your home.
