Our Public Services Expedition

Introduction
On Friday the 17th of June, me and the 9 other in my public services class went on an expedition which would take two days and which would complete 5 AOs of work. The aim of that weekend was to walk from our starting point which was Port Eynon and finished of at the second day at Pennard. Between the 9 of us our fitness levels varied. The aim of that weekend was to get to our final location while sticking to the route card and meeting Mr.Davies at the checkpoints along the way and the main aim of the expedition was to work as a team and make group decisions.

Route
We all started in planning the route in the classroom and we all decide where and when we would take break and toilet breaks, we took into consideration that if we walking up a really steap hill that we would need a rest at the top of the hill we all agreed that we would try and have a break every hour or when someone needed to catch their breath.

Equipment
The equipment that we need to bring on the Expedition Were: Hiking Rucksack 65 Litres Trangia 3Man Tent Enough Food for 2 days Waterproof Jacket Change of clothes A wash Kit ( towel, toothbrush, deodorant) An optional Sleeping Mat Sleeping Bag

Health & Safety

For health and safety Mr.Davies told us that when we walk on the road he always have to walk on the right side of the road because the oncoming traffic could see us walking. Another rule was that 2 team members had to carry high visibility jacket and when we walked on the roads one of the 2

people had to walk at the front of the line and the other at the back of the line. Another rule we had was when we get to the campsite and we start preparing our food the tranja has to be at least 2 metres away from the tent just in case it fell over.

Day 1
On the first day of the first day of the expedition we all met at Port Eynon beach to meet Sir and to start our walk. So after about ten minutes of waiting the first group had set off, so as they went off we were still waiting for one or two team members to turn up so we all took all are backs of and had a break while waiting. So most of the team went to the toilet before leaving, then finally we all set off then after about ten minutes of walking and trying to get to our first checkpoint we all had a little break just to geta drink and a bit of food while Scott and Nick tried to work out which direction we need to take so we had to go left right or go up the hills, so after a group decision we decided that to go straight up the hill but the map said that he should b e working the wood and a forest but he went the wrong way and went on the main road, so after singing songs and making jokes we stopped outside a caravan park entrance to have a break from walking up the hill and to work out how to get back on to the right path. So about fifteen or twenty minutes the weather took a turn for the worse, it had started raining and It hink that the weather made everyone a little more depressed that they originally were and I think that that made more argument because when someone needed a break some people wanted to keep walking and try to get to the campsite to get out of the rain. So when we met Sir at the next checkpoint he told us that we needed to forget about the map until the next checkpoint because he told us that if we went up this lane it will take us into a field and then at the other end of the field would be a little gate that you climb over and then you follow little paths all the way to the main road which would be about three to four kilometres so we all set off up that road for until 20 minutes. So we all started walking and when we got to the field we all decided to stop and to have lunch so we all chucked our bags down then all took ten minutes rest and as we were all eating we were discussing the direction on which we were going to take. Then when we finished are food we stated walking through the forest and the rain got even harder some everyone starting slipping and get stuck in the mud and then Kieran hurt his leg by twisting it while walking through a patch of slippery mud. So about another hour walking along the a foot path we reached and left or a right turning so we pulled out the map and tried to have a look on which direction to go, so after figuring out in which way to go we seen a stream so Alex tried to get everyones moods up by taking some picture by the lake of all of the group. Then we carried on walking for another30 minutes and stopped under

son trees again but me and a couple other thought that we have had to have many breaks and wanted to get a move on. So after twenty minutes to half an hour we got to the next checkpoint which was a police station. Then at the top of the road we seen Mr.Parry in his car waiting for his group which he said should be there in about ten or fifteen and he said that Mr.Davies was waiting for us at the top of Kevin Bryn, so we got walking towards king Arthur pub and thats when Kierans leg started hurting so Kieran slowed down towards the back of the group so Josh and Scott stayed behind to give him some support and to try and help him along. So we waited at the end of the road for them, when they got to us we started walking in the direction of the King Arthur pub and there is a turning to go right up to the top of Kevin Bryn which is where Mr.Davies was planning to meet us So we walked along the right side of the main road to get toMr.Davies as we were told to stick to the right hand side so nick went at the front and Scott stayed at the back with Kieran but there Was quite a lot of animals of that side of the road like horse and sheep sowe had to cross over the road to avoid scaring the them. When we got to Sir he told us that we need to walk down Kevin Bryn and 200 yards from the lake at the bottom is a sign posted foot path so we had a little chat to sir and a little break and we got going again. So we started walking on the right side of the road all the way down for about half a kilometre to the bottom and there sign posted was a little tiny path so we started following the path and the path had just finally stopped, so we stopped and pulled out the map while Nick went off to go and see if could find a path or a gate. Then Scott said that we need to continue in the path that we were going, so at this moment Kierans leg had got worse and no one want to be the anymore and thats when everyones personalitys shown through because Alex was trying to help Kieran by giving him motivation andkeeping everybodys spirits up where as Dom was the joker making laugh. We got to the end of thepath and there was a gate leading into a farm but we decided that we should go into the field because that wasnt on our route card so we went around the field and back up to the top of Kevin Bryn so as wegot to the of Kevin Bryn we took another break to figure out where we were and eventually we decidedto follow a little path heading to the crossroad so as we reached the crossroad we seen Elise Daviesgroup and asked them for directions because we didnt know how to get to Pennard castle. We went in search for a path on the map which was meant to take us all the way to the castle but Kieran said that his leg was to bad to walk on, so Luke rand Mr.Davies to ask if we could walk straight down the campsite because Kieran said that he couldnt continue. Luke said that Mr.Davies told him and everyone else to walk straight down the hill to the campsite and ill meet at the bottom of the hill. When we

reached the campsite Me Luke and Alex started to put out tent then while me and Luke finished of the tent andAlex started preparing his food on the Tranja. Then a hour or two later Mr. Turpin told us that we had togo into our tent so me, Alex and Luke went in to our tent and went to bed.

Day 2
We woke up at 7am On the Saturday morning we all woke up we seen one of the DoE groups set off and we werent even close to leaving and ready to do our second day our expedition as Luke went to brush his teeth and Alex has having breakfast I went down the tap and filled up my camelback with water ready for the day. Me and the rest of the group started to pack all of our stuff away into our rucksacks and all of us had to take our tent down, Scott, Josh, and Kieran were the first group to take down and to put away their tent. As me Luke and Alex put away our tent Josh and Scott started to help us put it away even though we didnt need the help I think that shows the team spirit and willingness to help team members. So all of our group were finally were ready to get moving but Mr.Davies told us to hold on for20 minutes while his other get going first. Then Mr.Davies said that we were ready to get moving so we headed out of the campsite and head back up Kevin Bryn but everyones shoulder and legs were suffering for the day before and Kierans leg hadnt healed so as we went up the path to get to the first checkpoint Dominic found a little path that ran all the way up to the top of Kevin Bryn so we decided itwould be easier for Kieran to go straight up than to go all the way around, so we decided when we gotto the top we will have a break because it was a very steep part of the hill. After a 20 minute break wegot walking and at the top of Kevin Bryn there was a path all the way down to the bottom leading on to the main road and at a farm at the end of the main road. Mr.Davies told us to follow the path through the caravan park and down in to the woods were you would come out by Sheppards shops and thats the net checkpoint when we would be meeting Sir. So we started walking down through the lane and after about 10 minutes we seen a field full of cows so we stopped to have a look at the cows and take so pictures of them. So after five minutes we left to get back on track, so we headed through the forest and eventually we got to Sheppards were Mr.Davies was waiting for us but when we turned the corner we seen thatMr.Davies group were there waiting having their lunch. So we chatted to them for five minute and thent hey set off while we stayed for another fifteen minutes to have are lunch. So as we were sitting there having food Rhys Morris started to eat his cold macaroni cheese for a tin and the smell

and look od it was unbearable, so after a chat and a bit of food we set off over bridge and Mr.Davies told us not to follow the path because youll end up going up the sand dunes instead go straight up and walk along the top of three cliffs. So one by one we all tried climbing up a slippery bank to get to the top of three cliffs me Nick, Alex, Luke all got to the top first and Kieran insisted that he couldnt climb the slippery bank so Nick and Alex went back down to the bottom of the bank to help him. Nick carried his rucksack for him and Alex was there for support and to help him get his footing right and to help him not fall over. So we all at the top and we Nick, Alex and Kieran all needed a break from the climbing the bank, so we got going up this little path which had led us to the top of three cliffs and as we got to the top of three cliffs we had seen Ben Morgan and his group walking a couple of hundred yards in front of us so I think that that gave us the motivation to walk faster to try and catch up with them. So we took another break near the golf course because at this point we were all tired because of the lack of sleep we got the night before and some of us with the lack of energy because we didnt bring enough food to last the two days. Then we went down one sand dune and Luke said that we needed to go up the sand dunes and because it was a big climb we would need a rest at the end of it so thats what we did. As me and Luke get to the top of the sand dune we seen that Nicky had offered to carry his own rucksack plus Kierans rucksack for him because he was struggling, so Alex thought it would be a good idea for him and Kieran to set off first and to keep a pace going so that when we leave ten minutes after then we should catch them up at the last checkpoint. Then we seen the other group resting on a bench waiting for Mr.Davies so we joined them and waited for Sir and then he told us to go up the road and meet him by his car so are group and the other group walked over to talk to him and he told us that we finished so we all took are bags off and just collapsed on the floor relieved for the weight of the rucksack.

Benefits
There has been a lot of benefits that have come out of it such as working as a team and instead of putting someone down you need to get behind them and tell them that they can do it instead of putting of telling them what they did wrong, and it has improved my social skills with people I wouldnt normal talk to or hang out with.

Conclusion

On the expedition it was good to find out every bodies strengths and weaknesses for example Nick was very determined to help any other in are group and supplied everyone with food and a drink which show that he cares about the team. Dom was the joker of the group getting everybody spirits up and making entertainment for everybody and always walking at the front of the group. Scott was the navigator of the group and was always in which direction we were walking. Alex Connelly was the motivator giving everybody encouragement. When we got to three cliffs Luke was the one who everybody followed because he knew the way. The positives to come out of the weekend was that everyone really enjoyed It was good to get to kno w everybody a bit better but it would of been better if we didnt argue as much on the first day and if we didnt split up at the top of Kevin Bryn.
