Whats New
Now Shipping: Version 4.5 of VERITAS NetBackup DataCenter and NetBackup BusinesServer.
VERITAS is proud to announce the immediate availability of version 4.5 of NetBackup DataCenter and NetBackup BusinesServer. This is a major new release of NetBackup that adds new functionality in several strategic areas.

Whats New in Version 4.5:

NetBackup Vault is now a standard NetBackup option with full support and improved usability via a new graphical user interface (GUI). The Vault In-Line Tape Copy feature permits the user to create multiple copies of their backup data while the backup is taking place. Duplicate tapes that are moved offsite for disaster recovery purposes are easily tracked, significantly reducing tape handling costs (NetBackup DataCenter only). Bare Metal Restore streamlines and automates server recovery for IBM AIX, HP-UX, Sun Solaris and Microsoft Windows platforms. GUI-Based Oracle RMAN Script Generation Wizard that eliminates the complexity involved in creating Oracle RMAN backup and recovery scripts. The NetBackup Database Archiver Agent provides Oracle users with the ability to create a database and operating system release independent archive (NetBackup DataCenter only). Superior Enterprise Storage Management With Global Data Manager with a new dashboard that allows users to access real-time reports and monitoring information from one console. New Look and Feel NetBackup Administration Console that improves NetBackup usability and configuration for easy deployment. Enhanced GUI Support for Drive and Media Management making it easy for NetBackup users to add, delete and modify scratch pools. Backup Exec Tape Reader provides users with the ability to leverage their investment in VERITAS technology. VERITAS now provides a seamless upgrade path from Backup Exec to NetBackup. VERITAS NetBackup Advanced Reporter is now enhanced with increased speed and manageability. New GUI features allow for easier navigation, while the Global Data Manager roll-up capability gives the administrator one report for several master servers (NetBackup DataCenter only). Continuation of the VERITAS VERTEX Initiative Including the New Array Integration Option that enables the use of hardware technologies from Hitachi Data Systems, Hewlett-Packard and EMC for either off-host or serverless backup. In addition, the VERITAS NetBackup ServerFree Agent now supports HP-UX (NetBackup DataCenter only).

Enhanced Firewall Support that provides administrators the flexibility to safely deploy NetBackup servers on either side of the firewall in their environment while also reducing the number of ports that need to be opened. Remote Network Data Management Protocol (NDMP) Support that improves the backup and recovery of NDMP-compliant devices by enabling data to move to a NetBackup media server. Users can share a tape library with other servers requiring backup. Enhanced Security to allow only authorized NetBackup users. Storage Unit Prioritization that gives NetBackup users the ability to prioritize the storage unit of their choice that will be used to complete the backup. A class or schedule can now be configured to use a group of storage units. Storage units can participate in more than one group and may be prioritized within the group.

Calendar-Based Scheduling that gives the NetBackup user the power to easily create backup schedules based on a variety of characteristics.

Whats New in VERITAS NetBackup 4.5

NetBackup NetWare Media Server Option is now available, providing superior performance for users who need to locally back up Novell NetWare servers (NetBackup DataCenter only). Expanded SAP R/3 Support now includes support for SAP R/3 environments using SQL Server 2000 or DB2 databases (NetBackup DataCenter only).

Common Questions:
Will NetBackup 4.5 be available to customers under maintenance? Yes, current NetBackup customers that are under maintenance will be entitled to receive NetBackup 4.5 at no cost. NetBackup 4.5 is a pull upgrade. VERITAS will send an e-mail out to customers with the required ordering information once NetBackup 4.5 is available.

Global Data Manager offers a single health view of the entire backup and recovery environment from a single console.

Frequency-based techniques may be combined with calendar-based techniques for extremely flexible scheduling of automated backups.
