NIGMS WHY WE NEED A DIVERSE WORKFORCE?

The United States is rapidly transforming into one of the most racially and ethnically diverse nations in the world. Science and engineering are national assets that drive innovation, economic strength, leadership, and the Nations national security (see Standing Our Ground II: Efficacy of University-based S & E Programs Despite Limitations of Strict Scrutiny, 2008) Groups commonly referred to as minorities are the fastest growing segment of the population and are emerging as the Nations majority. Training a diverse student body in STEM education today is imperative to improve the science literacy of the lay public for future generations. Despite the rapid growth of racial and ethnic minority groups in the United States, the potential of these groups is largely untapped and their representation among the Nations scientific workforce has grown only modestly (Bowen and Bok, 2008).

NIGMS WHY WE NEED A DIVERSE WORKFORCE?

To remain competitive in science and technology, the drivers of innovation, economic growth and national security, must continue to invest in the scientific training of its own people to produce a highly creative scientific workforce (Durand, 2008). A diverse globally-oriented scientific workforce and a diverse pool of science students are critical to achieving the Nations mission and goals. Different views, backgrounds, and experiences are associated with improved learning, greater diversity of ideas and approaches, and greater productivity and innovation that lead to new developments and improvements in current research knowledge that contribute to the national goal of improving the health of the people of the United States (Du Chatenier, Verstegen, Biemans, Harm, Mulder, & Omta, 2009). Students who have reaped the educational benefits of diversity will be better equipped to succeed and to assume leadership roles (Gurin, 1999).

NIH is the steward of medical and behavioral research for the Nation. Its mission is science in pursuit of fundamental knowledge about the nature and behavior of living systems and the application of that knowledge to extend healthy life and reduce the burdens of illness and disability.

NIGMS REVIEW: THE NEXT FRONTIER!!!!

WHO & WHAT REVIEWERS DO CRITERIA

Alberto L. Rivera-Rentas, Ph.D. Email: riverara@nigms.nih.gov

Reviewers Appreciate a Readable Application

Start with an outline and then write a topic sentence for each main point Make only one point in each paragraph, stating it clearly as a topic sentence Keep it short and simple (KISS): Keep paragraphs short. Start with basic ideas and progress to more complex ones. Use short sentences with a basic structure: subject, verb, and object. Break up long sentences Keep related ideas and information together, e.g., put clauses and phrases as close as possible to -- preferably right after -- the words they modify. Use strong, active verbs -- they are the workhorses of effective sentences. For example, write "We will develop a cell line," not "A cell line will be developed."
