Basis School Induction Ceremony National Honor Society National Junior Honor Society Carolyn McGarvey (CM): We welcome

you to this induction of new member to the BASIS Oro Valley National Honor Society and National Junior Honor Society. I would like to thank the BASIS Girls Choir. Membership in the BASIS Oro Valley Chapter of the National Honor Society is limited to the students in the 10th through 12th grades, which means, this year, all of our inductees will be 10th graders. We look forward to the day we can honor them as the first graduating class of BASIS Oro Valley. Membership in the BASIS Oro Valley Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society is limited to the 8th and 9th grade students. These students, selected for membership by the Faculty Council, have shown outstanding achievement in the qualities that Honor Societies respect and strive to maintain. In addition to maintaining a high GPA, these students exhibit an enthusiasm for academic achievement, demonstrate a desire to serve the school and the wider community, promote the principles of leadership, and exemplify a commitment to the continued exploration and development of character. We are honored to have the BASIS Tucson chapter of NHS here tonight to help us carry on the strong NHS tradition at BASIS schools by inducting our new members. The Tucson chapter has a history of service including organizing Toy, School Supply, Food and Diaper drives for children in need, donating money for victims of the Haitian earthquake, and participating in AIDS walks and the Shyam Kindness Walk. They demonstrate their leadership through the organization of a film festival and active participation in the organization of the Talent Show. The founding Oro Valley chapter hopes to be just as active, and work with the student body to serve the school and the wider community, as well as set a clear and vibrant example of leadership and character. We intend for them to blaze a path for others to follow. At this point in the BTucson ceremony, the seniors spoke we obviously dont have seniors, do you want to eliminate this portion, or do you want a student speaker? At this time, I would like to invite the officers of the BASIS Tucson Honor Society Chapter to come forward and conduct the induction ceremony. They are: WHO ARE THEY? _Student A______ will begin our Ceremony by discussing the significance of the candles set before us. Student A : The single (white purple)which is already burning, represents the eternal light og knowledge. It is surrounded by four unlit candles which represent scholarship, service, leadership, and character. Member ship in the BASIS Oro Valley chapter of the National Honor Society and National Junior Honor Society has been earned by the effective demonstration of these four qualities. Before we induct the

new members, we will take a moment to review each of these qualities. We will begin with ___Student B______. Student B: Scholarship means a commitment to learning. A student who demonstrates good scholarship is willing to spend hours in reading and study, knowing the lasting benefits of a cultivated mind. We should continue to learn even when formal education has ended, for education ends only with life. Knowledge is the one great element in life that can lead to the highest success and it can be acquired only through diligence and effort. Learning furnishes the lamp by which we read the past and the light that illuminates the future. Candidates have the charge to continually expand their world through the opportunities inherent in scholarship. I will know light the candle of scholarship. (Lights candle) Student C will speak to us about service. Student C: Service can be described in various ways, in the routine of the days work many opportunities arise to help others. Willingness to work for the benefit of those in need without monetary compensation or public recognition is a quality we seek in our membership. We are committed to the idea of volunteering our time and abilities to the creation of a better tomorrow. I will now light the candle of service. (Lights candle) Student D will speak to us about leadership. Student D: A student leader should exert a wholesome influence on the school. By taking the initiative in class and social activities, the real leader strives to train and aid others to sacrifice the willingness to yield ones personal interests for the interests of others. A leader has self confidence and will go forward when others hesitate. No matter what power and resources may exist in a country, they are ineffectual without the guidance of a wise leader. Leadership is always needed and is thus a substational charge to each of our members. I will now light the candle of leadership. (lights candle) Student A will now speak to us about character. Student A: Character is the force within each individual that distinguishes that person from the others. IT gives each one individuality and personality. It gives each one individuality and personality. It is the quality without which no one can respect oneself, nor hope to attain the respect of others. It is this force of character, which guides one through life, and once developed, continues to grow steadily. Character is achieved and not received. It is the product of constant action, daily striving to make the right choice. The problem of character is one of self-control. We must be, in reality, what we wish to appear to be to others. By demonstrating such qualities as reliability, honestly, and sincerity, we may hope to prove by example that we value character. I will now light the candle of character. I will now light the candle of character.
