Lust for Life - Friday Movie Club at Cholamandal

The Cholamandal Centre for Contemporary Art brings you the best in films on art ! On 29th July at 7 pm - Lust for Life - a film on the Dutch painter Vincent Van Gogh, starring Kirk Douglas. Winner of Golden Globe and New York Film Critics Best Actor Awards, Kirk Douglas gives a fierce portrayal as the artist torn between the joyous inspiration of his genius and the dark desperation of his tormented mind. The obsessed Van Gogh painted the way other men breathe, driving away family and friends, including artist Paul Gauguin (1956 Best Supporting Actor Award winner Anthony Quinn). Directed by Vincente Minnelli and saturated with the hues of Van Gogh's sea, field and sky, Lust for Life captures the ecstasy of art. And the agony of one man's life. Nalandaway in association with UNICEF presents Art, Arattai, Aarpattam, children's festival which began on 18 July and goes on till 31st July. The remaining part of the Schedule is given below. On 29th July from 10 am to 3 pm - Story telling Workshop - A tool of Learning Workshop for parents, teachers and educators on how to use storytelling techniques to help children learn. Workshop will be conducted by internationally renowned storyteller and educator Geeta Ramanujam who has been injecting new life into Indian classrooms by reviving the art of storytelling & Ola Henriccson, story educator from Sweden who works closely with the schools in Sweden to integrate concepts with stories. Tickets are priced at Rs.2500 inclusive of Lunch. At Allaince Francaise Of Madras, Nungambakkam. On 30th July at 11 am, 3 pm & 6.30 pm Story Telling & Puppet Show An enchanting storytelling and puppet show by popular storytellers Geeta Ramanujam and Ola Henricsson along with the Burratino Puppet Team. Adiperuku Festival at DakshinaChitra
Dakshinachitra, the heritage centre to promote the Cultural achievement of South India, celebrates Adiperuku Festival from 30th July to 7th August 2011. The primary objective is to create awareness and to learn about village traditions among urbanites.

The festival Adiperuku (the 18th day of Tamil month Adi) marks the onset of the rainy season. The festival also focuses on the importance of water in everyday life. Adiperuku, otherwise called Padinettam Perukku is celebrated near river basins, water tanks, lakes and wells etc of Tamilnadu when the water level in the rises significantly heralding the onset of monsoon for the blessing of mankind with peace, prosperity and happiness. Myilattam by Tanjai. G. Raju and troupe from Grammiya kalai Kuzhu will perform on the 30th & 31st of July and 1st August Folk Performance Kaliattam' by Muthukumar and troupe from Sivasakthi Kalai Kuzhu from Thurayar will be the highlight of this year's festival. Pachaikali and Pavalakali are energetic performances by dancers with painted faces and elaborate costumes. The Group will perform from 3rd 7th August everyday.

As the dates coincided with the Children's Mela there would also be also puppet shows, magic shows, bullock cart rides, glass blowing demo, palm leaf demo and theatre arts. Vidhuran is an amalgamation of three performing arts - Theatre, Dance, and Mime - three varied modes of expression that lend a hand in conveying a single story to its audience. With an enthralling Monologue at its narrative core, snippets of scintillating Mime presentations and stylized, Contemporary Bharathnatyam intersect the main narration at apposite moments, accentuating the high points in the show. India is known for vernacular architecture and slowly this culture is replaced by modern buildings .With the intention of creating awareness and understanding of traditional vernacular architecture, their materials, techniques and conservation, Dakshinachitra is organizing a 3 day residential workshop for students of Architecture (preferably 1st to 3rd year B. Arch students) Conservation Architect Mr. Benny Kuriakose will be the course director. Workshop on Vegetable and Fruit Carving

DakshinaChitra Heritage Centre conducts a workshop on vegetable and fruit carving on July 30 between 10.30 a.m. and 5.30 p.m. The art of vegetable and fruit carving originated in Eastern Asia. The only tool required is a carving knife. The workshop will teach participants to carve out the following shapes crocodile, penguin, dolphin, tortoise and swan. Escape from Hunger @ Escape

How many new movies have been released in the last couple of weekends? Dheivathirumagal, ZNMD, HP 7, KFP 2, 180, Transformers 3 and many more. Trust me.. I had been having a tough time booking tickets over the internet and sometimes grabbing the fast selling tix over the counters to make sure I keep up with the nail-biting race of the releases. In the meantime I had to make sure I took care of my gut, and that was when I noticed DINE @ Escape perfection amidst chaos. DINE is located on to your extreme left when you enter the Escape cinemas at the Express Avenue in Royapetta. For many who have already tasted the pleasure food here you know what I mean. This place is just a mix of contemporary seating with aromas from your very own kitchen, of course served by the staff of DINE. It was one such day this week, I decided to crash in to DINE with my family in the afternoon for lunch. For a week day we were indeed surprised to find a couple of tables already taken. The sight of neatly set wooden tables with glasses glittering over the lights and the white plates and cutleries, was a feast in itself. The staff were extremely pleasant and I liked the way they guided us to our tables. Being extremely hungry we skipped the soups and directly ordered the starters and the main course. The menu is a three course meal and there are not many to confuse you. We ordered only the Chicken malai kebabs for starters as we were informed it was served with nine pieces. But to our utter disappointment, it was a plate of small morsels of kebabs neatly arranged in three sticks. Well, not willing to waste any more time we waited for our lunch. As a heads up to the readers: please order all your food at one go. The service is slow and it would be better to wait once (though long). However, the lunch was a treat, especially for the biryani lovers. The Chef had done a wonderful job over the biryani as the food was spiced perfectly. We ordered a variety of food ranging from the biryanis to the chicken Caesar salad to the Mandarin Chicken. The Caeser salad was too good with the Caeser dressing on the side and the chicken served in long strips. And the mandarin stole the show served neatly with fried rice on the side, the strips of chicken marinated and fried to crispiness and tossed in the sauce yummy. On the whole if you don't want to self serve your food at the food court you can visit DINE for sure. This is reasonable as the price is not exorbitant and you get to sit in a nice set up overlooking the chaos but enjoying the serenity within the well bottled walls literally. -Gracy Angel

With the amount of information circulating on exercise and nutrition it's tough to know what is right and wrong. In fact, like the old song goes, some of it is so contradictory, that it's enough to drive a normal person to extremes!! All of the information presented is seemingly backed by adequate research and sounds extremely plausible, so how does one make the distinction between genuine sound advice and marketing gimmicks?? It's a hard one really-one day you read that tomatoes are good for you, and then two weeks later the same source reports that they cause Cancer, or some other debilitating disease. Which of the two pieces of information is accurate? In a situation like this it is best to go with your instincts, which are likely to tell you, that no fruit or vegetable can actually harm you - if they could, your grandmother would not have advised you to eat them would she have? She ate them herself and lived to see 90, so there must be some good in them. Nonetheless, eating Tomatoes alone cannot possibly be healthy - nor can drinking Cabbage soup alone!! It is logical that every type of food provides you with different nutrients, and therefore it makes sense from both a health and a sensory point of view to eat as wide a variety of food as possible!! Ensure that you get at least 5 servings of the different fruit and vegetables in season, every day, and hopefully you'll live to see a healthy 90 years too. Then there are these advertisements that promise a weight loss of 5 kgs in a month. Now you know that a weight gain of 5 kgs in a month is not healthy. If that is the case, can the reverse work for you? Of course not. Slow and steady is the key to weight loss. Use a combination of a healthy diet and lots of exercise, so that you build muscle and burn fat, thereby ensuring that you reach your target weight and stay there for the rest of your life. Lose 5 inches from your Abdomen in a month!! When you eat a slab of chocolate, no matter how strong your mind is, do you really think you can will the calories to park themselves in your big toe? Then how do you think doing 100 abdominal crunches will burn fat only from the abdomen? Fat is burnt more or less evenly across the body. The only rule that works is that using large muscles like the legs and arms burn more calories overall than a small muscle like the abdomen. Doing your abdominal crunches along with back exercises will strengthen your core area and ensure that you walk erect until your last days. They will also tone your abdomen, and develop the muscles in that area. However they will not burn abdominal fat alone. When some piece of information that you read defies logic, go with your instincts - it sounds crazy, probably because it is. Your body is a shrewd judge of what is good for it and what isn't, so listen to it carefully, pander to its needs and trust it to steer you correctly. Sunitha Srinivasan
