PRESIDENTS NOTES
On August 31st there was a Ribbon Cutting Caravan at five new businesses starting downtown at 9:00 a.m., then one in the middle of the community as MeMas opened as the operator of the Blue Devil Deli at KCK Community College, then two more on Leavenworth Road and a final ribbon cutting late in the day at Legends Toyota at Parallel and 435. There are several messages in those five ribbon cuttings. First, the entrepreneur spirit is alive and well in KCK. Second, people know there is business to be done throughout the community. Third, most of these businesses are family owned or have melded different parts of family businesses into them. One of the businesses, an automotive repair shop on Leavenworth Road had been a life-long dream of someone who had always worked for someone else. MeMas is the third operation of the third generation family owned business. And the team at Legends Toyota includes family members of the former Roger Smith Toyota, a former long time KCK business. Finally, a few days later I discovered a sixth ribbon cutting we should have done that day. There is a new office on Parallel Parkway called Byers Management office. This is a new/old business is the next step for long time architect Ray Byers. Ray, a well know architect, was the principal of Byers, Gunn & Hart, who retired from his practice after putting a stamp and look on many buildings not only in KCK, but throughout the metropolitan area for many years. Rays new business will be taking care of the properties he has owned and/ or managed for many years in KCK. Ray has shaped many parts of the city in the way business is done, buildings are built, and people helped. He not only ran a business for customers, but has given back as well in so many ways through his church, Kiwanis, his efforts at Presbyterian Manor, and as a friend. The five new businesses are more than just a business; they are already a part of the community. They give back. They employ people and they are or are becoming family. I can only think it is in great part because theyve followed Ray Byers example and the one he continues to set in our community. Congratulations to all of these new businesses! Thanks for being here and being part of our business community! A couple of other notes I want to share. First, we have some new leaders in our community to welcome Dr.. Doris Givens, new president at the KCK Community College, Randy Nyp, interim CEO at Providence Medical Center and Mi Ah Parrish, new publisher for the Kansas City Star. And in our own office, we said good-bye to long-time sales director Janet Reed in June, welcomed BRAND new Director of Sales Shelby Rogers who began her duties the first week of September, and will be bidding a sad farewell to our Afternoon Receptionist Carolyn Robinson at the end of the month. We wish Janet and Carolyn well and hope you will all assist Shelby as she works with us to grow the KCK Chamber.

A New Approach to Worksite Wellness

How many times have employers heard about the benefits of worksite wellness? What stops businesses from starting a wellness program when they know it results in healthier and more productive employees? What prevents employees from participating in wellness initiatives or improving their health on their own? For companies, the issue may be that they tried a weight-loss competition or walking program with minimal interest or results. For individuals, the problem is generally busy schedules, which lead to unused gym memberships and fast food meals. Humana, the Chambers health plan partner, heard these challenges and launched a program that helps employees take control of their health by identifying their risk factors, supporting their goals and motivating them to adopt new behaviors. The program is called Humana Vitality, and it has a simple, three-step approach: 1) Know Your Health To get healthier, employees spend time using the health measurement tools to better understand their current health. 2) Improve Your Health Employees use the web-based tools and vast network of wellness and fitness support partners to reach lifestyle and fitness goals. 3) Earn Rewards Employees are rewarded for getting CPR certified, donating blood, exercising, or stopping tobacco use. Rewards include everything from movie tickets to travel. Humana Vitality is different from other work site wellness programs because it offers more than 30 actions for employees to improve their health status and earn rewards. Anyone can participate, even if they cannot spend hours at the gym. Each action is automatically uploaded to the Vitality system, which saves employees time, but it also ensures monitoring is accurate. Individuals can see the direct link between their actions, health status and incentives. Incentives are selected by the employee and include music downloads, electronics, fitness gear and vacation discounts. Engaged employees can have a significant impact on annual health costs. Individuals who did not participate saw an increase in annual health costs of nearly 15 percent, while those engaged in Vitality witnessed a less than two percent increase. Plus, engaged employees have fewer doctors visits and lower costs associated with treatment of chronic conditions which can mean lower costs for employers. For more information on Humana Vitality or other worksite wellness options, contact your health benefits broker. If you dont have a health benefits broker, call the Chamber at 913-371-3070 for a complete list of Chamber member brokers participating in the health benefits program.

I try to recommend clients to employers who have a need for their particular skill set. Im blown away by the dynamic business leaders Ive met through the Chamber, KCK is really a well kept secret. I also enjoy the opportunity to volunteer with the Ambassadors SOLE group, I always come away getting more than I gave.
