Stella Artois World Draught Masters 2011

Few brands have catapulted to the pinnacle of the BA social scene in recent years like Stella Artois. From oversized billboards in Las Caitas to eld-side service at the Triple Crown of polo, the Anheuser-Busch InBevblonde beauty knows where to be seen and seduce total strangers. Fitting then that her powers of persuasion will lure beer masters from around the world to Buenos Aires next month. The Stella Artois World Draught Masters is an annual competition which celebrates the 9-step ritual of pouring the perfect pint of Stella Artois. Since the inaugural event in 1997, global champions have hailed from Australia, Belgium, Italy, New Zealand, Romania and the U.S. including last years champion Chris Myers. One of the aspiring contestants coming to Buenos Aires is Philip Messom from Belfast who was recently crowned Ireland Draught Master. I cant wait for the nals. Its a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, he told the Belfast Telegraph adding, I dont know if Im ever going to get the chance to visit that part of the world again, so Im taking a full week out over there to relax and enjoy it as much as I can. Should Messom win the competition, he wont have much time for breezy strolls through Recoleta and Palermo. According to the ofcial website, our winner will become Stella Artois Ambassador and go on a world tour teaching zythology and the art of the perfect pour to aspiring candidates. The itinerary will take our champion to Russia, Australia, China, USA, Canada, Argentina, Ireland, Brazil, England and, of course, the home of beer, Belgium.

Eugenio Cuttica, a contemporary artist born in Buenos Aires, belongs to the middle generation and has exhibited in galleries, museums, cultural centers and international art fairs for over 30 years. His work is based on a strong imprint of synchronicity and connection to what he calls the dimension of the innite frequency of no time.

_artista_
His works appeal to beauty, not from the intellectual construction, but as something that just happens, appealing to the idea of the artist as a vehicle of energy that passes and which he doesnt owns. Through its strong belief of showing another invisible reality, Cutticas works take on a connection that enables viewers to rediscover a contemplative state.

So when I received my invitation to the Grand Opening of the rst Hollywood Burger in Argentina, I was pleasantly surprised to see that it would take place, not in BA, but rather in the picturesque Mendoza town of San Rafael. Actually getting there would be another story. The winter eruption of Puyehue sent volcanic ash skyward and grounded ights throughout Argentina in July, so an overnight bus trip would be my method of carriage across the fertile Pampa. Considering that millions of young Americans have boarded buses for decades to seek out their fame and fortune in the Hollywood Hills, it seemed only tting that I seize the moment and do the same. The 1,000-kilometer journey was not only breathtaking, it felt like a trek into the heart of the Old West, a land of untapped opportunities for those willing to seek them out.

Argentina epitomizes opportunity for companies across multiple industries given its combination of youthful demographics, economic growth and rising consumerism. And while many foreign investors focus primarily on major cities like Buenos Aires, Rosario and Crdoba, there are incredible growth opportunities to be tapped and mined in what Argentines refer to as el Interior of the country.

HOLLYWOOD
minds from the worlds of casual dining, consumer goods and, of course, entertainment. bask in a Grand Opening glow as bright as the lights on Sunset. The night, like Hollywood Burger, now belonged to San Rafael, a town neglected for decades by every major fast food franchise. No longer. And along with the red carpet and paparazzi, San Rafael received something much more unique than just another burger joint. Hollywood Burger features an original Fresh Food Fast concept relying on local suppliers and a sleek gourmet coffee bar called Hollywood Cafe. Throw in a colorful Kids Playroom, free WiFi and the Hollywood star treatment, and youve got the recipe for a truly awesome franchise with something for everyone.

San Rafael is denitely one of those untapped gems, but it takes local intel to understand a local opportunity and a real group of visionaries to make it happen. Enter NYC-based DPEC Partners, the brains and capital behind the Hollywood Burger franchise. Having already made inroads with other investments in Mendoza, DPEC CEO Scott Mathis knew the town of nearly 200,000 coupled with the absence of a casual dining franchise presented a unique background for launching a revolutionary hamburger and gourmet coffee chain. He then assembled an investor team with some of the brightest

3.) Demographics: Argentina is home to 70 cities like San Rafael with populations over 75,000 and no major franchise to speak of. Just two months after the Grand Opening, potential franchisees have already been identied in several developed countries and emerging markets. Like the team at DPEC Partners, potential franchisees should have an entrepreneurial spirit, a track record of success in the restaurant business and shared enthusiasm for building the leading operator of Hollywood-themed hamburger and coffee houses in the world. If that sounds like you, maybe its time to board the bus and seek out your slice of Hollywood fame and fortune. For more information, email hollywood@investba.com.

With the next Hollywood Burger already under construction in Crdoba, it is easy to imagine this franchise blanketing Argentina in the near future for three very important reasons: 1.) Argentines devour good brands, or as they say in Spanish, comemarcas. Mix in the original Hollywood angle and the Fresh Food Fast concept and youve got a genuine recipe for success. 2.) Casual dining restaurants are the fastest-growing franchise segment in Argentina accounting for 34% of all new franchises. Growth is strongest in the longneglected interior of the country.

BA EMBRACES A NEW BRAND OF POLO

When most foreign travelers and investors think of Polo in Buenos Aires, it conjures up images of Cambiaso and Palermo, high-goal matches and La Martina clothing. But the new wave of polo being embraced by the City of Buenos Aires is slowly changing the landscape of Capital Federal and transforming the city into a net exporter of creative services. Under the direction of the Ministry of Economic Development, the four main polos or centers of attraction in Buenos Aires are the emerging Design District in Barracas based in the Metropolitan Design Center, the Tech District in Parque Patricios, the Audiovisual District in Palermo Hollywood and the Pharmaceutical District in the south. The Districts are spaces where companies and academia come together for innovation and production while blending with the cultural identity of the surrounding barrios. We attended the Grand Opening of the Design District last year. Today, that state-of-the-art facility serves as an incubator for young companies with promising products and design ideas.

BA EMBRACES A NEW BRAND OF POLO

The Technology District was the second polo to take shape, and Tata Consultancy Services was one of the rst global IT companies to make the move to Parque Patricios. Today, less than two years later, over 100 companies call the Tech District home, and the City just extended the H Line of the Subte to Parque Patricios making it easier for worker access. InvestBA was recently invited to attend a guided tour of the Tech District led by Ms. Valeria Zivelonghi of the Citys Investor Assistance Center (CAI). She explained the attractive package of tax exemptions, lines of credit and other incentives available to companies relocating to the District. Like the other BA Polos, the goals of the Tech District include promoting IT service exports and BAs economic diversity, attracting domestic and international IT investment, and transforming the surrounding barrio of Parque Patricios into a live/work/play destination that attracts more fulltime workers and small businesses that serve the new District residents.

BA EMBRACES A NEW BRAND OF POLO

The Audiovisual District was the third BA Polo to receive government approval, and it will have the largest geographical footprint (1,700 acres) and potential impact on job creation (63,000 new jobs) in Buenos Aires. From commercials to TV shows to feature lms, the City of Buenos Aires is now the 4th most popular destination in the world for lm crews according to a new ranking from Variety. Only Prague, Paris and New York rank higher than Buenos Aires which has blossomed in recent years as a destination of choice for lm and television production. We want the world to look at Buenos Aires as a movie set the size of a city, GCBA Economic Development Minister Francisco Cabrera adding, The sector is one of the most dynamic of the local economy. BAs affordability, abundance of creative talent, and diversity of backdrops makes it universally appealing with the barrios of Monserrat, Palermo, Puerto Madero, Recoleta and San Telmo among the most popular for lms.

Buenos Aires: The Most Affordable City in Latin America

The Wealth Management Research group at UBS released the 40th Annual edition ofPrices & Earnings, a standardized survey of prices and wages for 73 of the worlds largest metros. In terms of prices, UBS looks at a shopping basket of 122 different goods and services geared to western European consumer habits, and Buenos Aires ranks near the bottom at #68 sandwiched between Kuala Lumpur and Cairo. Scanning the list from top to bottom, a few patterns emerged in the past year of market turmoil and wild currency uctuations. The usual suspects are still the worlds most expensive cities (Oslo, Zrich,Geneva), US cities have all dropped several rungs given US dollar weakness against global currencies, Sydney catapulted to the Top 10 while NYC fell out given the Australian dollars continued appreciation against the US dollar. (Chart) In terms of Latin America, the MercoPress headline trumpets one of the key takeaways, Sao Paulo, Rio, Caracas and Bogot most expensive cities in South America.Weve chronicled Brazils dwindling affordability vis--vis BA, so the #1 and #2 regional ranking of SP (19) and Rio (26) comes as no surprise. Venezuelas 62% ination rate has much to do with Caracas ranking (47), while Bogot (57) rose 4 spots since the 2009 ranking.

Buenos Aires: The Most Affordable City in Latin America

Taking a closer look at Buenos Aires vs. Brazil, Brazil Investment Guide recently published an article titled Brazils Real Estate Prices are the Highest in the World. The analysis shows the price for new residential construction in some of Rio and Sao Paulos best neighborhoods cost anywhere from US$200 to $500 more per square foot than the most expensive neighborhoods in Buenos Aires like Recoleta, Palermo, Belgrano and Nuez. The adjacent graph compares the average price per square foot of new residential construction in six Brazilian barrios with similar price data for four Buenos Aires barrios. Earlier this year, we introduced IncomeBA, a select portfolio of income-producing condo-hotel properties for foreign investors in Buenos Aires, Argentina and Uruguay. As anticipated, the concept resonated with small investors looking to invest in hard assets during this period of rising global uncertainty and triple-digit gyrations on the Dow. The rst hotel, Palermo Place, commenced construction in 2010 and 97% of the units were purchased by foreign investors, most of them from the U.S., Canada, Europe, Mexico and Australia. All of our investors were making their rst real estate purchase in Argentina, which spoke volumes about their comfort level in dealing with a US-based real estate developer with signicant South American experience.

Palermo Place, the first P Hotel, Opened May 1 in Buenos Aires

Unlike the vast majority of real estate projects in Argentina, Palermo Place nished on time and on budget. Our investors came to Buenos Aires in April to take delivery of their units and celebrate the Grand Opening of Palermo Place, the rst hotel in the new P Hotel chain. The second P Hotel is currently under construction in the Buenos Aires neighborhood of Palermo Hollywood and the third hotel will break ground in January 2012 in the Uco Valley of Mendoza at Tupungato Winelands.

Today, four months since the Grand Opening, bookings are solid and Palermo Place already ranks among the Top 15 Buenos Aires hotels on TripAdvisor. From an investment standpoint, even better news came last month in one of Argentinas leading newspapers. Carlos Manzoni of La Nacion says that hotels, and specically condo-hotels, are the new boom property for real estate investors in Argentina. The article cites many of the same motivating factors outlined in our original prospectus: Argentinas protourism policies, relative affordability, quality of lifeand a tidal wave of Brazilian demand. Manzoni says Argentinas affordability has created a ood of Brazilian tourists including a new wave of middle-class travelers choosing Argentina for hotels,

In addition to strong demand coming from Brazil, North America and Europe, Manzoni says condo-hotel investments in Argentina offer other advantages like exibility, absentee ownership, the prestige of established brands and a monthly income stream derived from the hotels pool of rental properties.

Who Runs Buenos Aires?
Its a good question to ask considering this is an election

year in Argentina. Last year we wrote that BA had suddenly become A Runners Paradise. This year the sport has exploded with bigger races, better courses, more sponsors and, most importantly, runners.

A lot more.

Clarn says the Boom de Carreras is drawing 20% more participants than last year while female participation has grown 50% over the past decade. The sports beauty is its simplicity. You dont need fancy gear or expertise or money, says Clarins Jimena Olazar, so there are no excuses for not joining this new phenomenon. Seasoned runners and would-be corredores in Buenos Aires also have a great support network from the local Club de Corredores to Runnin Magazine with over 12,000 Facebook friends to the City of Buenos Aires herself which offers Buenos Aires Corre, free running education and training in ve locations throughout Capital Federal.
The 2009 Edition of the Nike 10K converted Libertador Avenue Into A Sea of Blue.

_deportiva_
Running teams in BA, Rosario, Crdoba and Mendoza, both informal and corporate-sponsored, are also growing at a phenomenal rate: 600% since 2001. And the payoff for all that training? Huge weekend races that feel more like a party than a pounding. Part road race, part rock concert, part love parade with thousands donning the requisite race shirt, road races in Buenos Aires are the most fun you can have with your shoes on. We Run Buenos Aires, Nikes annual 10K has become one of the most anticipated events on the running calendar. For the 2010 edition, the streets were bathed in a sea of day-glo green shirts, and Nike further solidied its reputation as the brand synonymous with running in Argentina. (Race Video)
The 2010 We Run Buenos Aires 10K with the Obelisk in the Background

_deportiva_
The 2011 edition of We Run Buenos Aires will take over the streets of BA on November 12, and this years color choice would make any die-hard Florida Gator, Clemson Tiger or Holland National Team fan (all Nike-sponsored clubs) proud. This years WRBA also promises to be one of the most high-tech and viral road races thanks in part to Nike + technology and the social networking tools employed during the online registration process. When registering for the race, runners are given the option of e-mailing four friends, tweeting their registration, posting on their own facebook page and even receiving SMS updates on their smartphone including their nish time the minute they cross the line. Another year, another race, more proof of who really runs Buenos Aires. If Nike continues to dominate the local landscape, runners may begin to think BA stands for Beaverton, Argentina.

lgodon Wine Estates

When CNN/Money Magazine recently selected four of the best destinations in the world for retirement, three of the cities were in the United States and one was located in a picturesque corner of Argentine wine country: San Rafael, Mendoza. Could there have been a better validation for the US-based investor group that chose to call San Rafael home four years ago? They arrived in 2007 with the vision of living the winemakers dream. Today, that dream is becoming a reality...

FROM THE MANSION TO MENDOZA
Since opening in Recoleta last year, the Algodon Mansion has quickly established itself as one of the premier hotels in Buenos Aires. Accolades have come fast and frequently from the international travel press including Travel+Leisures 2011 It List and the 2011 Cond Nast Hot List. With business rmly established in Buenos Aires, the New York developers behind the Algodon brand have set their sights on San Rafael, Mendoza for their next major development which is certain to appeal to foreign investors contemplating private vineyard ownership in Argentina. While all of the Algodon Wines tasted were superb, one of the real surprises was the Bonarda. On InvestBA, we have chronicled the meteoric rise in popularity of Argentine Bonarda, and it seems Argentinas second-most produced red may have found the perfect home in San Rafael.

A FIRST TASTE OF SAN RAFAEL

I rst visited Algodon Wine Estates in the fall (April) and fell in love with the project, the location, the natural beauty at the base of the Sierra Pintadas and of course, the wine. Some of the vines at Algodon Wine Estates date back to 1946, and I had the pleasure of dining with Algodons Senior Wine Advisor, Mr. Anthony Foster (pictured).

Bonarda grapes need hot weather, plenty of sunshine over the cluster, low yield and adequate ripening conditions. San Rafael offers all of these qualities plus two nourishing rivers supplying glacial runoff from the snow-capped Andes. On the second day, Mr. Foster gave us a guided tour of the Algodon winery which produces several award-winning Malbecs, Bonardas, Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, Pinot Noirs and a unique Cabernet/Syrah blend. He was enthusiastic about the quality of the 2011 Harvest, as well as the progress of the 2010 varietals.

SLEEPING SOUNDLY IN MALBEC
The Lodge at Algodon Wine Estates offers ve-star accommodations and 10 very spacious, well appointed rooms each named after a different varietal. My room, Malbec, was located in the Wine & Golf Lodge which features a cozy gallery with two replaces, large sofas and an honor bar stocked with ne scotch and bourbon. The warm mix of colors and textures in the Wine & Golf Lodge stands in sharp contrast to the more formal black-and-white of the Algodon Mansion, the Wine Estates big city cousin. Like the Mansion, the Lodge is no stranger to accolades having already picked up the 2010 Wine Tourism Award for Best International Accommodations from Great Wine Capitals. The rooms feature beautiful King-size beds with enormous headboards, sitting areas with stoves, custom cabinetry and private terraces for relaxing outdoors after a round of golf or horseback riding. Attention to detail is evident from the antique mates on the desk to the Algodon milled soaps.

LIVING THE DREAM

The long weekend at Algodon Wine Estates offered the perfect elixir of relaxation, ne wine, natural beauty and even a round of golf amid half-century-old vineyards. Two emotions dened the return ight to BA on Monday: sadness over leaving mixed with elation over discovering a hidden gem only a few knew aboutuntil now. Earlier this year CNN Money chose San Rafael as one of 4 Great Places to Retire. The Fortune blog described the city with a population of 173,000 as being very affordable with plenty of amenities, and the feel of a small European town. CNN Money says San Rafaels charms are beginning to lure expats from the U.S., Canada and Europe in search of a unique retirement destination where those with an active lifestyle and an entrepreneurial spirit are nding un paraso argentino. A New Bottle for Argentine Malbec
Veralia Argentina, a global glass manufacturer with ofces in Mendoza, is rolling out three distinctive bottles that will carry the stamp Malbec Argentina. The company has been working on the initiative for three years and believes it will help Argentine Malbecs easier to identify in foreign grocery and liquor stores, according to Los Andes Miguel Angel Flores. This could prove especially true in the United States where most retailers tend to group Argentine wines under a catch-all category like South American wines. The new bottles are part of the Ecova line which Veralia introduced in 2009 and come in three different sizes to indicate the individual wines quality : Maipo (premium), Cuyo (super premium) and Icono (self explanatory).

DeNiro, Bono Investing In Mendoza

Pairing is everything when it comes to ne wine and cuisine, and the pairing of the worlds greatest living actor with one of the worlds best wine producing regionswould be a maridaje increble. According to Los Andes, Robert De Niro may soon join the list of celebrities investing in Mendoza vines. The legendary actor is interested in purchasing an approximately 100-acre vineyard in Mendoza. While the deal has not closed, the paper says negotiations for a Mendoza vineyard are fairly advanced. Earlier this year U2 lead singer Bono was spotted in Mendoza shopping for his own private vineyard. Sources say the tentative name for Bobby Ds Argentine wine is ttinglyRodrigo Mendoza, the same name of the character he played opposite Jeremy Irons in the 1986 lm, The Mission.

More Foreigners Buying in Mendoza
The number of foreign investors buying real estate in Mendoza continues to rise according to a new survey of buyers and brokers in Los Andes Online. Gabriela Balls says investors view Mendoza as a safe place to invest with regions like the Valle de Uco, Vistalba, Chacras de Coria and San Rafael as some of the most sought-after destinations in Argentinas most prolic wine region. In terms of who is doing the buying, Balls says our neighbors from Chile top the list followed by the French, Americans, Italians, Spaniards and Canadians. The economic slowdown in Europe has triggered a wave of Mendoza-bound migration from Spain and Italy, while similar malaise in our hemisphere is resulting in more North Americans investing in Argentina vineyard properties, raw land or second homes in Mendoza. Balls spoke with one broker who listed New York, Los Angeles and Miami as three of the U.S. markets where the number of inquiries for investment opportunities in Mendoza have risen sharply in recent months with crisiseeing Europeans and real-toting Brazilians rounding out the Big 3. The author said every broker she consulted says foreign investors are drawn to casual living elements surrounding the vineyard lifestyle like ne dining, golf, tennis, hotels, Spas, polo and horseback riding.

SALENTEIN
Reserve Malbec 2010
Notes: Prime example of a Valle de Uco Malbec. Deep, sexy violet color. On the nose intense red fruit and blackberry aromas. In the mouth, juicy at entry where you find the same intensity as the nose. The fruit and the oak are well balanced. Gives a long finish that begs for another glass.

LAS PERDICES
Reserva Bonarda 2008
Notes: One of Argentinas finest Bonardas. Very intense purplish/red color. Aromas of raspberries and red fruits with a spicy background with delicate hints of vanilla courtesy of the oak. Elegant, nice and friendly on the palate. Smooth, velvety tannins. Balanced with spice notes, red fruit, chocolate & coffee.

DEL RIO ELORZA

Verum Merlot 2009
Notes: Its no secret the Patagonia region produces Argentinas best Merlot, and this Verum Merlot is marvelous. Visually intense red with aromas of red fruit and vanilla from the wood. The tannins are round and mature. Finish is smooth and persistent.

KRONTIRAS
Doa Silvina Fresh Malbec 2011
Notes: A unique Malbec which somehow emulates the great Nouveau Beaujolais. Ideal for drinking at 48-50 degrees. Deep violet. The nose is pure fruit, figs. The palate is lively with Malbec notes more pronounced at the recommended temperature. Another fine example of the versatility of the Malbec grape.

TERRAZAS/CHANDON
Terrazas Torrontes Reserva 2010
Notes: Its no coincidence this wine has won two consecutive Decanter Wine Awards in 2010 and 2011. The traditional Northern Argentine vine achieved international accolades as only Moet & Chandon of Argentina can do it. Yellow with green tints. Aroma of jasmine, lemon, roses. Excellent acidity in the mouth. A genuine world-class Torrontes.

Prodeo Hotel BA Hotels

Create Unique Spaces to Close the Deal

A delegation of UK businessmen recently ew 7,000 miles from London to BA to pursue tourism investment opportunities in Argentina. Meetings with government ofcials were scheduled well in advance and a convenient location was agreed to by all parties: the hotel restaurant. The visiting delegation could simply take the elevator to the lobby, the locals knew the landmark property by heart, and bilingual, rst-class service was guaranteed. Its hard to imagine a better place to showcase Argentinas hospitality and culinary offerings to potential tourism investors than a working breakfast or lunch in one of the citys nest hotels. MensajeroWeb says the breakfast in question at the Four Seasons Buenos Aires gave Argentina tourism ofcials the perfect platform for making the case for investing in Argentinas tourism sector to the visiting Brits. And while Buenos Aires hotels have more meeting and convention space than any other city in Latin America, who wants to sit in another drab conference room with the requisite Polycom, dry erase board and deli platter? Its the unique dining, drinking and smoking spaces in BA where you are more likely to seal the crosscultural deal. From a La Mansion brunch at the Four Seasonsto the Vinoteca at the Palacio Duhau to the Cigar Lounge at the Algodon Mansion, these are creative spaces that re the imaginations of foreign investors, especially those seeking to do something equally bold and adventurous in the booming world of Argentina tourism.
