A new season of merry music-making has once again arrived at Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS. This marks the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestras (MPO) 14th season, a testimony of its commitment and passion to bring together people from all walks of life through the power and magic of its music.
The MPOs remarkable musicianship, artistic fervour, diverse repertoire and its numerous excellent education and outreach programmes, have undoubtedly brought great joy and memorable experiences to many in our community. Similarly, the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, which has played to sold-out performances during the previous seasons, will I am sure, further stamp their mark as an upcoming youth orchestra. I applaud the MPOs initiative to continually provide opportunities to hone the musical skills of these talented youths, and in so doing, further ignite their zest to raise their level of performance going forward. As the MPO embarks on this new Season, I would like to acknowledge the MPO for its efforts and achievements over the years. Its role in promoting, nurturing and inculcating the appreciation and understanding of classical music amongst Malaysians, is vital to the development of fine arts and cultural landscape of Kuala Lumpur and Malaysia. I have no doubt that this Season, the MPO will continue to astound music connoisseurs, as well as to celebrate musical talents, through its colourful and irresistible repertoire. In particular, I am indeed thrilled to note that our child prodigy, Tengku Ahmad Irfan, as well as Malaysian pianists Bobby Chen and Foo Mei Yi, will continue to share the stage alongside our MPO musicians, in what will be mesmerising performances of some of the cherished works of Mozart, Bach and other iconic composers. The MPOs continued collaborations with renowned guest conductors, soloists and other artists will bode well for the industry in particular, and music lovers, in general. Do join me in yet another wondrous Season of superb performances by the MPO! Thank you.

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to our new season. This will be my fourth season as Music Director of the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO), and it is my great pleasure and honour to be able to announce something both astonishing and unique: this season will focus on promoting young Malaysian musicians.
This marks the first time in the MPOs existence that we are able to present to our audience such a great number of new talents during the entire season. It is wonderful to see that most of them come from the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra family the best of them have reached such a degree of individual qualification that we feel compelled to introduce these young musicians to our loyal subscribing audience. You will be able to experience the collaboration between members of the MPO and young artists be it as individual soloists, as soloist ensembles, or in a side-by-side performance of Tchaikovskys Pathtique. Additionally, we have, of course, prepared several highlights for you. We were able to engage guest conductors who are known as specialists in their respective fields, and who will prove instrumental for the further development of our orchestra in terms of style and interpretation. Soloists of great international acclaim have accepted our invitation to demonstrate their mastery, interpreting this seasons musical works together with our orchestra. I am confident you will have many enjoyable and exciting moments while visiting our concerts. Come and enjoy music from all ages and regions of our world. Your Music Director,

I am delighted to welcome all of you to another season of inspiring music at Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS (DFP) and glorious performances by the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO).
The past Season has seen the MPO perform great classical pieces and other popular works alongside world-acclaimed artists and conductors that has enthralled audiences both young and old. The DFP Showcase and DFP Spotlight presentations of jazz and other contemporary music were no less spectacular. Encouraged by your ardent love for music, we are very happy to present, in our 14th season, a selection of the best that the music world has to offer. Under the continuing artistic stewardship of our Music Director, Maestro Claus Peter Flor, we commence the new season with the incredible Concerto for Three Pianos by Mozart, performed by Malaysian talents Tengku Ahmad Irfan, Bobby Chen and Foo Mei Yi. Our new offerings will include the Beethoven Solo Concerto series, as well as works with the organ and orchestra, featuring Olivier Latry and Jennifer Bate. We are also happy to invite back on stage some eminent conductors Stphane Denve, Bernard Labadie, Benjamin Schmid, and Richard Kaufman, amongst others. The Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra will also share the limelight with its MPO mentors in side-by-side performances that will highlight their ever-increasing musical prowess. We continue to bring you great entertainment with the promotion of other musical genres and performers like classical tabla virtuoso Zakir Hussain, jazz luminaries Laura Fygi and Chris Botti who will collaborate with some of our highly versatile MPO musicians. We will also feature local favourites M Nasir as well as fresh talents Yuna, Aizat and Najwa. The second instalment of the KLCC Seni Festival in October 2011 will see the MPO working with traditional arts groups, ensembles and local artists in a music extravaganza to celebrate local traditional music and dance. Our events and activities for the Education and Outreach programme (Encounter) continues to expand as a reflection of our commitment to bring the marvels and joy of music to the less privileged in our community. I take this opportunity to thank our sponsors, partners, subscribers and audiences for making it possible for us to create magical musical moments within and outside of DFP. The Venue & Orchestra

On 17th August 1998 a revolution took place in the performing arts scene in Malaysia.
Not only did it mark the inaugural performance of the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO), the countrys first fully professional symphony orchestra, but it was also the official opening of Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS (DFP), the countrys first dedicated classical music concert hall. DFP is popular with both performers and audiences because of its excellent acoustics, world-class facilities and intimate atmosphere. As international opera star Bryn Terfel has said; I only wish I could put the hall in my pocket and take it with me everywhere I perform. It is truly a pearl in the Malaysian musical heritage. Beyond classical music, DFP is increasingly the venue of choice for local and international artists on the jazz, pop and world music scene. Last season saw the groundbreaking KLCC Seni Festival, a collaboration of Malaysian artists from various artistic fields and the MPO, featuring the Malaysian pianist Foo Mei Yi as Young-Artist-in-Residence. The MPO has become one of Asias premier orchestras. Guided by Music Director Claus Peter Flor, it performs over 100 concerts annually which, in addition to the great orchestral repertoire of the past four centuries, features the emerging composers from Malaysia and beyond. There is a regular series of chamber concerts featuring small ensembles from within the MPO, while a popular innovation in recent years has been the informal Happy Hour concerts in which MPO musicians highlight their performance interests outside mainstream classical music. The MPO undertakes frequent visits to other venues in Malaysia most recently a series of chamber concerts in Pulau Pinang and Melaka as well as international tours including Singapore, Japan, Korea, China, Taiwan and Australia. Visits to schools, hospitals and community centres, as well as instrumental lessons and music appreciation events, are among the many outreach activities organised under the MPOs Education & Outreach Programme (Encounter). In December 2010 the MPO released its 14th commercial CD Smetanas Ma Vlst to wide international acclaim.

Artist biographies
CLAUS PETER FLOR He learnt conducting with Rolf Reuter, continuing his studies with Rafael Kubelik and Kurt Sanderling. At 31, he became General Music Director of the Berlin Symphony. He made his dbut with the Berlin Philharmonic in 1988, and between 1991-94 was Principal Guest Conductor of the Philharmonia Orchestra in London and Artistic Advisor to the Tonhalle Orchestra in Zrich. His recordings include Shostakovichs Tenth Symphony, Martin symphonies, a highly acclaimed Mendelssohn cycle with the Bamberg Symphony with whom he also recorded the world premire recording of Bruchs Oratorio Moses, and three highly-acclaimed releases with the MPO. KEVIN FIELD A 10-year association with the MPO has seen Kevin Field instigate and establish numerous key music activities and events. In addition to his role as MPO Associate Conductor, he is also founding conductor and Artistic Advisor of the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, and founder and Director of the MPO Forum for Malaysian Composers and the MPO International Composers Award. With the MPO, he has established one of the leading new music series to be found anywhere in the world by a symphony orchestra, with over 200 premires of works by living composers from Malaysia and abroad. AIZAT KL-born Aizat Amdan made his singing dbut on Akademi Fantasia 5. In 2007 his single Hanya Kau Yang Mampu became the Number One song in the local Radio and TV music charts for several weeks. It broke all records in terms of airplay and downloads and made Aizat the leading local solo artist in terms of volume of downloads in the form of Caller Ringtones. It was awarded the Most Downloaded Song in Malaysia in 2008 at the 16th Anugerah Planet Muzik 2009 held in Jakarta. ALAN BURIBAYEV Current Chief Conductor of the RTE Orchestra in Dublin and Principal Conductor of the Norrkping Symphony, Alan graduated from the Kazakh State Conservatory as both violinist and conductor, and continued his conducting studies at the University of Music, Vienna. His victory at the Lovro von Matacic Conducting Competition in Zagreb brought him international attention and invitations from several European orchestras. ALAIN LOMBARD A French conductor of both operatic and orchestral realms, and best known for his interpretations of French opera. He was appointed Assistant Conductor at the Lyons Opera in 1961, becoming Principal Conductor in 1965. In 1967, he was assistant to Leonard Bernstein and made his Metropolitan Opera dbut with Gounods Faust. His recordings include Delibes Lakm, Mahlers Fifth Symphony and several recordings of Carmen. ALAIN TRUDEL Music Director of lOrchestre Symphonique de Laval and founding Music Director of the National Broadcast Orchestra, Alain has conducted orchestras in the UK, USA, Japan, Hong Kong and Latin America. He made his dbut as a trombone soloist at 18 with Charles Dutoit and lOrchestre Symphonique de Montreal, and was the first Canadian to be a Yamaha international artist. ALESSANDRO CRUDELE Born in Milan, Crudele studied violin and composition at the Conservatory Giuseppe Verdi, graduating in 1997. He studied conducting (1999-2001) with Gianluigi Gelmetti at the Accademia Chigiana in Siena. He was appointed Chief Conductor of the Orchestra dellUniversit degli Studi di Milano in 1999, and made his dbut with the Orchestra dellAccademia del Teatro alla Scala in 2003. Recent appearances have included Rossinis Il Signor Bruschino in Milan, dbuts at the Tonhalle Zurich and the Philharmonie Berlin, and a critically-acclaimed visit to South Africa conducting the Johannesburg Philharmonic and the Kwazulu-Natal Philharmonic. ALEXANDER MELNIKOV He began music at age six at the Central Music School in his native Moscow and continued at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory from which he graduated in 1997. While still a student pianist, Alexander became a prize-winner of several major international competitions and shortly afterwards began his international career. He maintained close artistic ties with Sviatoslav Richter, who regularly invited him to participate in his festivals in Moscow (December Nights) and at Grange du Meslay (Tours, France). Since 2002 he has taught piano at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. ALEXANDER SHELLEY Alexander won first prize in the 2005 Leeds Conductors Competition and in 2009 was appointed Principal Conductor of Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra. He is also Artistic Director of Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremens ground-breaking project aimed at building a lasting relationship between the orchestra and a new generation of concert-goers through exciting and unusual programming concepts. ALEXANDRE THARAUD Alexandre has been invited to play with international orchestras in Germany, Canada, Japan, Asia and France. His knowledge of French music extends beyond the main repertoire and includes contemporary composers such as Thierry Pcou and Grard Pesson, whose Concerto he will premire in December 2012 with the Tonhalle in Zrich and the Frankfurt Radio Orchestra. His projects, Hommages Rameau and Hommage Couperin, in which he combines a selection of the old masters works with tributes by contemporary composers, followed by PianoSong, a contemporary music programme inspired by pop songs. BENEDETTO LUPO Italian pianist Lupo made his dbut at Londons Wigmore Hall. He performed Nino Rotas Concerto Soire with the Spanish National Orchestra on the occasion of the composers 100th birthday and has recorded the work which earned him a Diapason dOr. He teaches at the Nino Rota Conservatory in Italy and serves on the jury of the Cleveland International Competition and the Gina Bachauer Competition. BENJAMIN BEILMAN Violinist Beilman made his Philadelphia Orchestra dbut in June 2009 performing Beethovens Romance. He has appeared with the Detroit Symphony, Toledo Symphony, Cayuga Chamber Orchestra, Kalamazoo Symphony and the RAI National Symphony in Turin. All exchanges carry a non-refundable fee of RM5 per ticket. CLOAKROOM Free cloakroom facilities are available at Level 1 of the concert hall. It is opened 30 minutes before performance until 30 minutes after its conclusion. FOOD & DRINKS are not allowed in the concert hall. NO SMOKING Smoking is strictly prohibited in the concert hall. PARKING Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS (DFP) is situated between the PETRONAS Twin Towers at Kuala Lumpur City Centre. There is a basement autopay car park and also ample open parking bays near the Twin Towers. When you enter the basement car park of Suria KLCC, follow the signs marked Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS which will lead you to the lifts that will take you straight to the concert hall foyer instead of the shopping centre. PREPAID PARKING tickets are available for purchase from the Concert Programme booth. It is valid only on the day of purchase and for entry after 7pm until 12 midnight. FACILITIES FOR THE DISABLED Facilities for wheelchair users include a ramp to the foyer, a lift with low-level buttons, levelled floor and a designated wheelchair position in the stalls. A unisex toilet for customers with disabilities is available at the Stalls, Circle and Upper Circle levels. An induction loop is available in the Stalls and relays the performance to those using hearing aids with a T-setting. Please advise our Box Office staff at the time you book your tickets if you require the above services. LATECOMERS Concerts at DFP begin promptly at the advertised starting time. No latecomers will be admitted until the interval or a suitable break in the programme. Members of the audience who leave the hall before or during the performance will not be re-admitted until the next suitable break. We regret that latecomers to Family Fun Day concerts will not be admitted as these concerts are only one hour long with no suitable breaks. As a courtesy to the performers and other audience members, please remain in your seat until the concert has concluded. ELECTRONIC DEVICES (including mobile phones, pagers, watch alarms) All concert goers are requested to switch off their mobile phones, pagers, watch alarms and other electronic devices before entering the concert hall. All usage of mobile phones such as the Short Messaging Service (SMS) is prohibited, this is to ensure an ideal concert experience both for the performers and other audience members. RECORDING EQUIPMENT (including cameras, video recorders, tape recorders, mobile phones). All forms of recording and photography equipment are strictly prohibited in the concert hall. We seek the co-operation and understanding of all audience members in observing this policy. BAG CHECKS The safety and security of our patrons are of utmost importance to us. Whether you decide to deposit your bags or bring them into the hall, your bags may be subject to security checks. However, all bulky items, plastic carriers, backpacks, large briefcases and umbrellas must be placed at the Cloakroom at Level 1.
