# ANC Deputy President Jacob Zuma has asked party members to support
whoever is elected at the ANC’s Polokwane conference next week. Zuma
was speaking at the South African Communist Party’s Red October
campaign rally in Bekkersdal on the West Rand. Reports this morning say
Zuma told delegates at the rally that democracy must be allowed to
prevail. The SACP also called for unity after the conference. Political
analysts say that the Alliance has set the scene for the vital conference
and it is now up to the ANC delegates to determine who will lead the party
and probably the country.

# A 141-page document said to contain startling revelations of allegations

forming the basis of the Scorpions' case against, among other people,
National Police Commissioner Jackie Selebi, has come into the
possession of the newspaper Beeld. The document was compiled from
sworn statements handed to the Scorpions. The statements were taken by
former Airports Company South Africa security chief Paul O'Sullivan, as
part of his private investigations into Selebi. The statements apparently
reveal a clear trail of alleged organised criminal acts committed by self-
confessed drug dealer Glenn Agliotti, with the help of his friend Selebi.

# A 40-year-old woman collapsed and died after diving on the Aliwal Shoal
near Umkomaas in KwaZulu-Natal yesterday. Netcare 911 spokesperson
Chris Botha told NewsFlash the woman had indicated to her diving
instructor that she was not well and was immediately brought to the
surface. She died shortly after being lifted into the dive boat. It is believed
the woman may have suffered a brain haemorrhage while under water.

Meanwhile, paramedics in Johannesburg have confirmed that two men

died and one is still missing after they were swept away in flash floods at
the weekend. The body of a man who drowned in Soweto on Saturday was
recovered yesterday. In another incident, a father and his son drowned
after they were swept away in flash floods in Ivory Park. The father’s body
was recovered but his son’s body had not yet been found by late
yesterday. The two men were caught up in flood water as they tried to
cross a river.

And in Bedfordview, a woman had a lucky escape when part of the ceiling
and two walls of a shop collapsed on her during the heavy rain on
Saturday. The woman was partially buried under the rubble and had no
pulse when paramedics arrived. However, she was revived and rushed to
hospital.

# Golf … Ernie Els’s many fans are still reeling in bitter disappointment this
morning after The Big Easy literally threw away his chance of winning the
Dunhill Championship at Leopard Creek yesterday. Els approached the
18th two shots ahead of England’s John Bickerton and appeared a certain
winner. However, his control simply left him completely and he hit his ball
into the water twice to finish the round on a triple-bogey eight to give
Bickerton victory by one stroke.

# Finance news is that the US dollar is trading at 6-rand-72-cents and the

euro at 9-rand-85-cents. One British pound costs 13-rand-66-cents. Gold
is selling at 799-dollars-05-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted
at 88-dollars-54-cents.

# And finally ... A legal battle is under way in the western Greek city of
Patras over a parrot that is facing a four-thousand-500-rand fine over a
parking ticket. The local council says Coco’s perch of 18-years is illegally
parked and is obstructing drivers because it partially blocks a metered
parking space. However, Coco’s owner says it will kill the bird if he has to
move and the matter will now go to court. The crowded city has bitterly few
parking spaces.
