Our Mission to Serve

APA supports the broad spectrum of member interests, including those in the areas of science, practice, education, health, and human welfare.

advancing the Science of Psychology

APA has a strong commitment to promoting research funding and the dissemination of psychological science scholarship. APA seeks to advance the visibility and influence of psychological science by working closely with federal policymakers, collaborating with other scientific societies, and reaching out to the public. APA supports the scientific community through advocacy work; the development of workshops, conferences, and career advancement activities; the recognition of excellence and achievements in the science of psychology; and the provision of advanced training, networking opportunities, outreach programs, and resources for researchers.

Supporting the Practice of Psychology

APA and its companion organization, the APA Practice Organization, are dedicated to supporting practicing psychologists and enhancing consumer access to psychological services in all settings through a wide variety of activities. The APA Practice Organization and APA represent licensed psychologists through legislative advocacy, legal and regulatory strategies, marketplace activities, and public education, and by providing resources for practitioners.

Promoting Education in Psychology

APA works with educational institutions to support programs and initiatives that enhance the quality of education and training of psychologists, the teaching of psychology, and the application of psychology to schools and education. APA promotes advocacy and public policy as they relate to psychology education, sponsors an annual forum on education, and fosters collaborations that focus on the application of psychology in schools.

benefiting Society and Improving Peoples lives

APA applies the science and practice of psychology to the fundamental problems of human welfare and social justice and the promotion of equitable and just treatment of all segments of society through education, training, public policy, and public information. APA addresses discrimination and other inequities for underrepresented groups such as children; women; ethnic minorities; lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals; older adults; persons with disabilities; and others. APA improves health and human welfare by addressing issues such as HIV/AIDS; end of life; socioeconomic status; violence prevention; and work, health, and stress.

Serving as an International Partner

As part of the global psychology community, APA seeks to keep its members knowledgeable about the international scope of psychology. Coordinated by its Office of International Affairs, APA promotes international exchange and collaboration through information resources, web and newsletter communication, international representation including at the UN, and outreach to APAs more than 7,000 international members and affiliates. Your membership supports these and many other essential programs working to influence the perception, the practice, and the advancement of our discipline and our profession, nationally and worldwide. We hope that APAConnect will show you how to get the most out of your APA membershipby getting involved and staying involved!

Professional development Professional Development

APA plays a vital role in helping psychologists advance their careers and attain their professional goals. The Associations services, information resources, and membership opportunities make it possible to benefit from a wealth of perspectives. The following sections describe opportunities for you to get involved, stay current on the latest developments in psychology, and reap the career benefits of your APA membership.

divisions of the american Psychological association

APA divisions serve to recognize, support, and advance more than 50 focused interest areas of APAs members. Joining one or more divisions is a powerful way to connect with the people who share your particular scientific, academic, and professional interests. Division membership offers you identification and networking opportunities in specialized areas; information about developments in specific subfields of the discipline; and publications, programs, and activities tailored to your interests. Members of APA may apply for membership in as many divisions as they wish. Each division establishes its own criteria for membership; although some may have more specific requirements, most divisions simply require the member to have an interest in the activities of that division. When you affiliate yourself with APA divisions, you gain visibility, increase your networking opportunities with your peers, and make your mark within your chosen subfield. For a complete listing of APA divisions or to join a division online, visit the APA website.

State, Provincial, and Territorial Psychological associations

An APA-affiliated psychological association is located in every state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and six provinces of Canada. Visit the APA website for a complete listing of State, Provincial, and Territorial Psychological Associations. As set forth in the APA Bylaws governing affiliated organizations, state and provincial associations represent the scientific and professional interests of psychologists within a given state or jurisdiction. In addition to providing an opportunity for useful social and professional exchanges through regular association functions, these organizations represent the psychological community in matters of state and local public decision-making.

I have been affiliated with aPa since I was a graduate student. It has been a wonderful organization for all the support, alliances, and opportunities it has given me to network with other members of my profession.

Build or expand your network by connecting with psychologists in your area of the country. You can make a difference by volunteering your time and talents with your state or regional psychological association. Through your APA membership, you will make lasting connections with leaders in your specialty area (division) and your geographic locale. Affiliated associations sponsor meetings and workshops and facilitate exchanges among psychologists through newsletters, bulletins, and scientific and professional journals. Some associations also process requests for referrals from people in need of psychological services.

Governance
Much of the work of APA is done voluntarily by the members of the boards and committees. You can make your voice heard and play a crucial part in the growth and influence of APA by participating in the Associations governance. APAs governance has a complex system of checks and balances that help make the system operate fairly and democratically. The APA Bylaws take precedence over all other internal rules and establish the major structural units of APA: the Council of Representatives; the Board of Directors; the officers; the standing boards and committees; and the central office, with a chief executive officer. The Council of Representatives is drawn from members of the APA divisions and state, provincial, and territorial associations. It has broad authority to develop the internal and external policies of the Association; it has full authority over APA affairs and funds; and it elects at-large members of the Board of Directors, as well as the recording secretary, treasurer, and members of many boards and committees.

advocacy
On behalf of you and all other psychologists, APA: Informs legislators about psychology and its relevance to federal policy Advocates for increased support for psychological research funding and behavioral and mental health services Strengthens the voice of psychology at the regulatory level Advances opportunities for the education and training of psychologists Applies the expertise of psychologists to address the many challenges our society faces

Your partnership with APA brings your voice to the forefront through legislative advocacy, the media, and public education concerning the issues of greatest importance to you, your colleagues, and the discipline. APA and the APAPOs advocacy in the U.S. Congress and with federal agencies is geared toward advancing psychology in the areas of education, practice, public interest, and science. From developing research and education standards, creating guidelines for education and training, and advocacy for funding and service programs to supporting career opportunities and the delivery of cutting-edge research and its applicationsAPA and the APAPO help strengthen the credibility and respect for psychology among business leaders, the media, educators, health consumers, and policymakers. We welcome member participation in advocacy efforts and in helping to forge essential bonds in the public sphere.
