Two Veteran HCA Leaders Get New Responsibilities

Division merger creates greater efficiency, multi-market operating unit
HCA, which operates 164 hospitals and 111 ambulatory surgery centers, announced that two veteran HCA division presidents are undertaking new responsibilities. Stephen E. Corbeil, who has been President of the companys Midwest Division in Kansas City since 2007, will become President of HCAs Nashvillebased TriStar Division. He replaces Larry Kloess, whose retirement was announced earlier this month. In addition, HCA veteran and longtime Delta Division President Mel Lagarde will become President of HCAs newly-named MidAmerica Division, based in Kansas City. This division includes the companys existing Delta Division (based in New Orleans) and Midwest Division operations. HCA will maintain a market presence in the New Orleans area with certain division staff based there. These transitions will begin immediately. The merger of Delta and Midwest, two of our smaller divisions, makes sense for a number of reasons, said Paul Rutledge, President of HCAs Central Group. Joining the two divisions enables us to improve efficiency while continuing to support our hospitals and creating a multi-market operating unit similar to most other HCA divisions. Steve and Mel are veteran HCA division presidents with proven track records as outstanding multi-hospital leaders, said Rutledge. Their familiarity with HCAs culture will serve them well in their new roles. As MidAmerica Division President, Lagarde, 54, is responsible for HCAs 18 hospitals and six ambulatory surgery centers in Missouri, Kansas, Louisiana and Mississippi. A 32-year employee of HCA, Lagarde served since 1995 as President of HCAs Delta Division, which at one point included HCAs operations in Austin and Corpus Christi. Prior to that, Lagarde was Chief Operating Officer of HCAs Gulf Coast Division in Texas from 1994 to 1995. He also served in various hospital leadership positions at several HCA hospitals in Georgia, Virginia and Texas. In his new role leading TriStar, Corbeil, 51, is responsible for the divisions 17 hospitals and nine surgery centers in Tennessee, Georgia and Kentucky, including seven facilities in HCAs hometown market of Middle Tennessee. Prior to returning to HCA in 2007 to become President of HCAs Midwest Division, Corbeil held several senior-level, multimarket leadership positions with Tenet Healthcare. Before that, he was CEO of HCAs Medical City Dallas Hospital from 1996 to 2000.

Best Protection Against the Flu: Vaccination

The single best way to protect yourself and others against influenza is to get a flu vaccination each year. The flu shot is an inactivated vaccine (containing killed virus) that is given with a needle, usually in the arm. The flu shot is approved for use in people older than six months, including healthy people and people with chronic medical conditions (such as asthma, diabetes, or heart disease). Prevention steps the CDC recommends to help prevent the flu: Take time to get vaccinated Take preventive actions daily, including washing your hands often with soap and water, covering your nose and mouth when you cough or sneeze, staying home when you are sick

The Influenza Clinic for Research Medical Center, HCA employees and all physicians/allied healthcare professionals who work in the facility is as follows: Oct. 6 6:30 a.m. - 9:30 p.m. Research Medical Center (5 West nursing station) Oct. 18 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Research Brookside Campus (Home Base) Oct. 19 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. Research Medical Center (5 West nursing station) Oct. 20 6:30 a.m. - 9:30 p.m. Research Medical Center (5 West nursing station) Oct. 25 7 a.m. - 1 p.m. Research Medical Center (5 West nursing station) IMMEDIATE FAMILY MEMBERS: Information will be sent out regarding vaccinations for immediate family members in late October. There will be a $20 charge for family members receiving the vaccine. Please take note: A vaccination sticker will be given to everyone who receives the vaccine. When reporting to the Clinic to receive the vaccine, you must wear your identification name tag. Mask requirement for those who are unvaccinated and working within six feet of patients or other designated areas will begin at 7 a.m. on November 1. All employees will need to report to the Clinics to sign declination forms if they choose not to be vaccinated. Employees who were vaccinated elsewhere need to report to the Clinic to complete consent forms, provide verification of vaccinations and receive stickers for identification name tag. If you have questions about the vaccine, a healthcare referral service organization is available to answer calls from HCA employees. Call the toll free number at 1-888-741-5118.

Join the American Cancer Society in the Battle Against Breast Cancer
Research Medical Center and Research Brookside Campus will join the fight against breast cancer on Oct. 29 by participating as a flagship sponsor in the American Cancer Societys Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, a non-competitive walk that will be held at Liberty Memorial. Stephanie Graff, MD, Ginny Gordanier and Carolyn Tessler, coordinators for the Research Making Strides team, have a goal of recruiting 100 walkers for a day of funraising for this very important cause. An estimated 5,000 women in Kansas and Missouri will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year and nearly 1,100 will die from it. The disease affects our wives, mothers, sisters, aunts, grandmothers, daughters, friends and colleagues, which is why Research Medical Center, as part of HCA Midwest Health System, has made a commitment to join the fight against breast cancer during Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October. We all know someone touched by breast cancera patient, a family member, a friend, explains Stephanie Graff, MD, medical oncologist with Research Medical Center. This walk gives our Research Medical Center family the opportunity to walk along side them, offering our support. I hope youand your family and friendswill join us. As the nations largest non-government supporter of breast cancer research nationwide, the American Cancer Society has funded $323 million in breast cancer research grants since 1972 and has been an important part of nearly every major breast cancer research breakthrough of the past century. Funds raised through this event will support this critical breast cancer research and support programs and services the society provides to improve the quality of life and chances of survival for cancer patients right here, in our community. Get the facts about

Research Medical Center nurses contribute to the hospitals leadership in patient safety.
Research Medical Center (RMC) received the Missouri Award of Excellence for Patient Safety in 2011 for our frontline staff collaboration with Risk Management in Nursing and Quality Peer Review. RMC received the Missouri Award of Excellence for Patient Safety in 2009 for our implementation of Just Culture. Nurses at RMC reduced the fall rate to meet our hospital goal of less than 3 per 1,000 patient days. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) national benchmark rate for complications/ patient safety is 1 percent or less. We are less than 1 percent. A new radiation safety program was implemented to decrease exposure to patients and healthcare professionals. Implementation of a patient suicide prevention program is underway. RMC completed its Institute for Safe Medication Practices assessment. Positive patient perceptions of safety increased from 2009 to 2010. The positive results of RMCs effort to create a culture of safety is evident in the increase of occurrence reporting above the HCA rate of greater than 14 per 1,000 adjusted patient days. This score is an indication that staff feels comfortable in reporting safety events.

RMC nurses lead the endeavor to secure nursing magnet status and advance the practice of nursing.
Research Medical Center is well along its Journey to Magnet Excellence with the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Nursing at RMC meets or is better than national magnet standards in several key areas according to licensed bed size: Decreased RN turnover Decreased RN vacancy RN Average Length of employment RNs with bachelor of nursing degree RN decision-makers with graduate degrees RN decision-makers who are advance practice RMC meets or exceeds magnet scorecard criteria for the following: Nursing professional framework shared governance model Nursing professional practice model synergy model Nursing theorist model Patricia Benner Novice to Expert Nursing clinical recognition program Research College of Nursing is working in partnership with the Research Medical Center Quality and Risk Departments to instill a culture of patient safety with nurses in-training. Six performance improvement projects are underway to improve care and to teach students the PDCA process so they can contribute to process improvement when they begin their nursing practice. RMC has standardized the on boarding process for new nursing graduates and Licensed Independent Practitioners. RMC has created competency metrics for nurse preceptors using evidenced based tools and strategies for teamwork (TeamSTEPPS).

Research Medical Center is among the best for nurse-to-patient staffing ratios.
RMC is above the mean in registered nurse hoursto-patient days ratio as compared to hospitals participating in the Magnet Status Database for Nursing Quality Indicators.

RMC nurses are leaders of teams to improve patient satisfaction.

The quality of Research Medical Centers nurses is an important reason why the hospital consistently exceeds national quality standards.

At 70 percent, Research Medical Center is the second best performer overall within HCA Midwest Health System for HCAHPs RMCs pain management score improved by 12 percent in the second quarter of 2011.

Joint Commission-Certified Advanced Heart Failure Center: Research Medical Center (RMC) is a Joint Commission-certified Advanced Heart Failure Center. RMC was the 8th hospital in the nation to be awarded this certification and was the first in Kansas and Missouri. ACTION Registry-GWTG-Gold: This award recognizes Research Medical Centers commitment and success in implementing the highest standards of care for coronary artery disease patients. Get With the GuidelinesTM-Heart Failure-Gold Plus: Research Medical Center is one of 93 hospitals in the nation to receive this award, which recognizes our commitment and success in implementing the highest standards of care for heart attack patients. Get With the GuidelinesTM-Stroke-Gold Plus: The award recognizes Research Medical Centers commitment and success in implementing the highest standards of care for stroke patients. RMC was one of just 33 hospitals nationwide to receive Triple Gold recognition by the American Heart Association in 2010. 100% compliance with CMS core measure metrics for Heart Attack (AMI) and Congestive Heart Failure (CHF). Research Medical Centers average door-to-balloon time to open up clogged arteries in heart attack patients is consistently among the best in the area, the state and the nation. We meet the average national standard of 90 minutes or less 100 percent of the time, and our average time for 2011 year-to-date is 61minutes. Low number of hospital-acquired conditions: RMC total of 4 for the second quarter of 2011. No post-operative deep vein thrombosis in first quarter 2011.

No mortality for abdominal aortic aneurysm in first quarter 2011. The national benchmark is 1 percent or less. Our overall hospital mortality rate is 2.3 percent compared to the national average of 2.6 percent. Our overall hospital complication rate is 5.10 percent versus the national average rate of 7 percent. No surgical site infections for HIP and hysterectomy. Our blood stream infection rate is 0.2 versus state average rate of 0.9. Our MRSA nosocomial infection rate is below the national benchmark of 1.3. Our C-difficile infection rate is below national benchmark of 0.8. Avoidance of pneumothorax post surgery at RMC is better than other hospitals within hospitalcompare.gov Compared to other hospitals in hospitalcompare.gov, RMC has less excessive bleeding post surgery. Avoidance of infection following surgery at RMC is better than other hospitals in hospitalcompare.gov RMC care of cancer patients in six cancer indicators is better than the national rate. According to a prevalence study, the national incidence of pressure ulcers is 3 percent. RMCs rate is 1.7 percent.

Research Medical Center nurses are continuing the charge to verify and adopt high standards of care from national accrediting organizations.
Accreditations 2011: received accreditation from the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers, renewed hospital Joint Commission accreditation, preparing to recertify the Advanced Heart Failure Center and Primary Stroke Center with the Joint Commission, and beginning to prepare for diabetes accreditation. RMC is participating fully in the Centers for Disease Control national survey of maternity practices and infant care. RMC is the only adult hospital in KC, Mo. to participate in the Leapfrog survey. The national survey assesses hospital performance based on four quality and safety practices that are proven to reduce preventable medical mistakes and are endorsed by the National Quality Forum (NQF). This data is publicly reported.

Adopt-A-Family
The Holiday Season is fast approaching. Our economy is stable but fragile and hopefully our 401Ks have stabilized (at least some). Without your help, many of our Research Medical Center co-workers and their families will experience a very meager holiday season this year. We are appealing to your heart as much as your pocketbook when we ask for your help. Your generosity and bountiful spirit made it possible for many Research Medical Center families to enjoy and celebrate holidays past. Last year over 25 Research Medical Center families benefited from the collective generosity of 25 departments and physician partners. Many thanks! We are now planning Research Medical Centers 2011 Adopt-A-Family program. If you and those in your department are interested in helping our families, including those who work at the Research Brookside Campus, contact your supervisor, department director, unit chaplain, or the Pastoral Care department at 276-4120. All interested departments and individuals must respond by November 11. This will allow ample time to collect gifts and food. Distribution will be Friday, Dec, 16, at the main campus. If you are a Research Medical Center employee who would like to be considered for adoption, you may pick-up a nomination form in the Pastoral Care office, Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Nomination forms need to be completed and returned to the Pastoral Care office by November 11. All family adoptions are managed confidentially.
