Creythorn is delighted to present our latest salary survey and
market report on the T and Telecommunications ("TET") industry.
With responses from almost J000 TET professionals, this document
provides some of the most up to date and comprehensive information
currently available on the market.
There is no doubt that economic and market conditions have
affected all professions over the last 12 months and TET sector
is no exception. ndeed, a quarter of respondents' departments
decreased in size over the course of 2009 with the reason in over half
of cases being headcount reductions. However, it appears there is
light at the end of the tunnel! Three quarters of respondents stated
they are feeling optimistic about the economic future and 89 of
permanently employed responders felt secure in their current role.

- 2922 TET professionals responded to the
Creythorn Salary Survey in February 2010.
- 78 were male and 22 female. 0verall 44 were
employed permanently, 42 in contract roles
and 14 were not currently working. 0f those
employed, 9J were in full time roles.
- Whilst respondents came from all industry sectors,
the most represented areas were Covernment
(24) and Technology (27).
- Pespondents came from across Australia; the most
prevalent regions were Sydney (42), Velbourne
(J2), Canberra (11) and 8risbane (8).

- 51 of respondents have been in the T profession
for between 6 and 15 years.
- Unsurprisingly, around three quarters of both
permanent and contract respondents work
between J6 and 45 hours per week, however a
further 22 of permanent employees work more
hours than this including 6 who work more than
51 hours per week.
- nterestingly, almost 40 of permanent
respondents have been in their current role for
less than one year.
- However given the volatility of the market in
2009, redundancies played a key factor, with 24
of these candidates changing roles as a result of
being retrenched.
- Vost contractors have been in their current role
for between 2 6 months, with 21 more than 24
months. n particular, of the 15 of respondents
that work within government, 27 have been in
the role for more than 2 years.

- A sign of the times, 16 of respondents overall
changed roles due to redundancy. However
candidates still value career development (perm)
or interesting/challenging work (contract) over
salary.
- J4 of respondents would move for a salary
increase of up to 10, with a further 29 requiring
between 11 and 15. Almost 20 would require
between 16 and 20.
- Almost 80 of candidates surveyed would
recommend their employer great news for HP
departments! This contrasts greatly to a recent
survey from Seek* which found 59 would not
recommend their current employer. 0ne possible
reason for this is that respondents on Seek are
likely to be actively looking for a job and therefore
not happy in their current role, whereas Creythorn
surveyed all passive and active candidates.

- Pleasingly, 89 of permanent respondents felt
their job was either very secure or secure,
however, for contractors this number dropped
signicantly with almost J0 stating their job
was insecure. Civen that such a large number
of permanent respondents were new to their
job (40) this perhaps illustrates that people are
beginning to feel the market is improving and
permanent candidates are no longer fearing a
redundancy.
- The future is looking bright for 76 of respondents
who felt either extremely optimistic or optimistic
about the economy over the next 12 months. 0nly
8 felt pessimistic or extremely pessimistic.
- 8risbane and Canberra were slightly less optimistic
than the other two main cities and Velbourne was
the least pessimistic.

- Surprisingly, during 2009, J9 of respondents reported an increase in the
size of their team, with only one quarter reporting a decrease. 0f these,
over half were due to redundancies, and 25 chose to leave voluntarily.

career path as a result of the recent downturn.

respondents indicating that more could be done in this area to ensure
employee satisfaction. Vost respondents least valued gym membership
or car allowance/company parking.
- 0ver three quarters of respondents received 20 days holiday or more.
nterestingly exitime or working from home is now very popular with
almost half of respondents receiving this benet. 0espite 2009 being a
downturn, J5 of respondents still received a bonus and JJ training.
