The D.B. Cooper caper is one
of the most baffling mysteries in
American history.
A man calling himself D.B.
Cooper purchased a $20 one-
way ticket from Portland, Ore.,
to Seattle in November 1971.
Shortly after takeoff, he settled
back in Seat 18C, lit a Raleigh
cigarette and passed a note to the
stewardess that he had a bomb
in his brief-
case. He
showed the
flight atten-
dant a tan-
gle of wires
and what
could have
been a
bomb, then
demanded
$200,000 and several para-
chutes. Later, the man leaped
from the jet with more than 20
pounds of cash strapped to his
body and was never seen again
alive or dead.

the anniversary with look-alike
contests, and treasure hunters
scour the woods in Washington
in attempts to find some of the
elusive cash or an important
clue.

The best time to do an insur-
ance inventory is before trouble
strikes, and the best place to
store your inventory list is some-
where other than your home.
Should you have a claim, photos
and written documentation are
your best evidence of property
you own.
Photos
If you have a digital camera,
your task will be made easier if
you buy an additional memory
card. Take all your photos with
that memory card in the camera,
and then store the card in a bank
box or another safe place. If you
have a film camera, youll need
to print out your photos and
store those.
There are two steps to taking
insurance photos: what easily
can be seen, and whats hidden.
Stand in the middle of each
room and take photos in a circle
around you. Thats the easy
part. The next step involves
opening closet doors and draw-
ers and taking pictures of the
contents. Your best bet is to
have the camera set on the
largest photo it will take, often
larger than 3000 by 2000 pix-
els. The reason is that youll be
able to take photos of the back
of electronics, such as televi-
sions and stereos, or the bottom
of collectibles such as china,
and have the model and serial
numbers available when you
blow up the photo.
Dont forget to inventory the
contents of your garage or attic,
as well as any sheds on your
property. Photograph the exteri-
or of your home and your vehi-
cles.
Another method is to use a
video camera, but be sure your
aim is steady. Still photos are
preferable, as studying each
one will allow you to clearly
see which items you also need
to add to your paper inventory
list.
Paper
Print out online (or get from
your insurance agent) an inven-
tory form to jog your memory
about what you own and need to
document. List each item.
Receipts are likely stored with
your warranty information, but
youll need them for any claims
of loss. Receipts will show the
date of purchase as well as the
cost.
Keep everything in a bank
box or another safe location: A
copy of the memory card with
your inventory photos (or the
photos themselves), copy of
insurance policies and your
paper inventories.

National PTA recommends 10
to 20 minutes per night in the
first grade, and an additional 10

Positive Reinforcement
A positive attitude goes a long
way. Shower children with posi-
tive reinforcement. For larger
homework projects completed
over several days, reward each
step as well as the overall com-
pletion.
Keep Snacks On Hand
Remember hungry kids are
distracted kids, so offer them a
wholesome snack while they
work.

story stone structure has been
completely remodeled, but still
retains all the Victorian charm of
its turn of the century construc-
tion. Downstairs contains a
comfortable lobby, a nice restau-
rant, and a saloon. The saloons
huge bar was apparently won in
a poker game somewhere and
installed here by owner Carl
Eklund in 1894. The two bullet
holes in the tin ceiling are a sou-
venir of President Hardings
1920 election.
Other local attractions
include a fine local museum and
the grave of outlaw Black Jack
Ketchum.

The northeastern part of
New Mexico is one of the lesser
known regions of our state. Yet it
was the first part of New
Mexico to be annexed by the
U.S.A. That corner of the state
above the Canadian River was
actually part of the Louisiana
Purchase of 1803. Thats a full
generation before Stephen
Kearny planted the Stars and
Stripes in Santa Fe plaza.
It is indeed remote from
Albuquerque. However, let me
give you a few reasons to spend
some time exploring this coun-
try north of the Canadian River.
The Capulin National
Monument. There are over 100
volcanoes between Raton and
Clayton along highway 64/87.
Capulin Volcano is not the
biggest, but it is spectacular. It is
the youngest volcano in the

Touring New Mexico

region, being only 60,000 years
old, and is supposedly the most
perfectly formed cinder cone
volcano in North America. A
good road winds around its
steep sides to a parking lot locat-
ed on a low point of the rim.
A short trail descends into
the center of the volcano. There
is also a one-mile trail that cir-
cles the rim. Both are paved.
The rim trail has some steep
inclines, but the views from the
8,182-foot summit are well
worth the effort.
Dinosaur Tracks. In 1982, a
flood washed away the top layer
of silt from the spillway at
Clayton Lake State Park. What
it exposed was a massive
dinosaur tracksite with over 500
footprints preserved in the
revealed sandstone. Dating from
about 100 million years ago, it is
considered one of the best pre-
served and most extensive track-
sites in the United States. A
walkway lets the visitor get up
close and personal. The park
also features camping, fishing
and birdwatching.

are simple, everyday actions
you can take to help you and

you still need to get a flu shot
this fall. The Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention (CDC)
recommends that anyone ages
six months or older should get a
flu shot, including those who
were vaccinated last season. The
flu vaccines ability to help pro-
tect you declines from one year
to the next. So even though the
vaccine has the same ingredients
as last season, you still need to
get a flu shot.
2. You should get a flu shot as
early as possible. It takes about
two weeks for your body to
develop full protection against
flu symptoms. Seasonal flu can
be unpredictable, and even
healthy people can get seriously
ill from the flu. For best protec-
tion, its important to get a flu
shot as soon as it is available.
3. Flu vaccinations are easier
than ever to obtain. A CDC
report released in June 2011
shows that retail pharmacies are
becoming an increasingly popu-
lar destination for flu vaccines.
Flu vaccinations are available
every day with no appointment
necessary.
4. You may be able to get a flu
shot at no cost. Many insurance
plans cover flu vaccinations.
With the expansion of health
care coverage under the
Affordable Care Act, many pre-
ventive health care services,
including the seasonal flu vac-
cine, are available to even more
individuals at no cost than ever
before.

damaged gutters offer little aid
for channeling roof water away
from a home, and they can lead
to water damage to the fascia
boards, the attic area and even
your basement. n on-working

Gutter maintenance should
be done at least twice a year.
Inspect and clean your gutters
in the spring and late fall, at a
minimum. If windstorms and
other weather conditions occur
or if there are trees near your
home, perform gutter mainte-
nance even more regularly.
Leaves, pine needles and twigs
By Mark J. Donovan can clog gutters. Also, if you
observe poor water flow
through the downspouts or
water pouring over the sides of
the gutters, its a sure sign that
you need to check the gutters.
In addition to cleaning the
gutters out, inspect them for
any holes, cracks or loose
mounting brackets that may
have pulled away from the fas-
cia board. Check the nails and
screws that are holding the
mounting brackets to the fascia
boards to make sure they arent
sticking out. Replace any dam-
aged gutters if they are unre-
pairable. Also, check for any
mold or mildew growth on the
fascia boards, and remove it. In
some cases, there is little choice
but to remove the gutters tem-
porarily to clean and repair any
damage to the fascia boards.
To check the downspouts,
use a garden hose to spray
water from the top of the gutter.
In some cases, you may need to
use a wire brush to push
through or pull out any debris
clogged in the downspout. You
may have to disconnect the
downspout from the gutter if a
clog is particularly difficult.
When performing gutter
maintenance, make sure you
use a quality ladder that is well-
positioned on the ground, and
wear gloves and eye protection.
To reduce the frequency of
gutter maintenance, consider
installing a gutter guard over
the top of the gutters. Gutter
guards prevent the infiltration
of leaf and twig debris into the
gutters. That said, gutter guards
are not foolproof, so you still
should inspect your gutters a
couple of times a year. Leaf
debris that breaks down can
eventually work its way
through the gutter screens and
into the gutters themselves.
Most gutter guards are very
easy to install and are reason-
ably priced, so it may be worth
investing in them to save your-
self some time down the road.

air into your home and waste
energy when your heating sys-
tem has to work harder. That
will cost you. So assess the
seals on all of your windows,
including bay windows, to see
whether you have any prob-
lems to fix.
A simple way to test each of
your windows is to move your
hand around the outside bor-
ders and middle pane edges to
feel for cold spots or breezes.
Some experts recommend
slowly moving a lit candle or
incense stick around the rims of
your windows, but be sure to
keep curtains and sheers clear
of any flame or ember as you
do so. If your candles flame
flickers or your incense sticks
smoke blows in a different
direction, thats the site of a seal
issue.
What Causes Window
Seal Failure?
Most often, age is what
causes window seals to fail.
Weather seals installed several
years ago may have dried out
and become inefficient, or they
may have become damaged.
you may just have a buildup of
dirt or leaves or a dead bug
stuck in the window tracks,
pushing the seal out of posi-
tion.
Cleaning Your Seals
Vacuum your window tracks
and seals regularly to remove
debris, dirt and dead insects.
Next, spray your window
tracks with an all-purpose
cleaner, and let it sit for a few
minutes as it works on dirt and
grime. Then take a specialized
window track cleaning brush
and scrub away all buildup.
Wipe the tracks completely
clean, and dry them with a
paper towel before closing the
window.
Repairing Window Seals
Some seals do need to be
replaced for example, old
seals that absorb water, causing

mold issues, and completely
dried-out or flat stripping. As a
weekend project, you can
repair old or damaged seals on
your windows. To do this,
know which type of seal youre
replacing or repairing. Do you
have weatherstrips, or is it
caulk? Full and complete
removal of either is essential to
creating a complete seal with
new product.
Use a putty knife to remove
any existing seal or caulk
around the interior trim of the
window and clean the surface.
If you are removing caulk and
choose to re-caulk your win-
dow edges, use a caulking gun
to apply new silicone or sili-
cone-impregnated latex caulk,
which is readily available at
home improvement stores.
If you prefer the look and
process of weatherstripping
over caulk, consider the two
main types of weatherstripping
used around windows:
Self-stick tapes: Made of
rubber, foam or vinyl, these
strips are backed with adhesive
covered with a peel-off back-
ing. Simply cut the strips to
length, peel the adhesive, place
them and press them to secure
them.
Nail-on strips are ideal for
wood windows because they
dont depend on adhesives,
which can lose their sticking
power over time or in heat.
Where gaps are large, use a
vinyl tubular gasket or rubber
tubing with a metal-reinforced
flange for nailing.

Oertel of Professional Coatings,
a 28-year old company special-
izing in complete stucco restora-
tions of homes and yard walls,
as well as new windows with
coordinated installation. An
approved applicator of all exte-
rior coatings, Professional
Coatings workmanship can be

the Albuquerque metro area.
Oertel, Professional
Coatings owner, makes no
bones about his work ethic. I
was brought up in the construc-
tion industry to do the job right
the first time, he says. That
starts with the communication
between Oertel and his clients.
In talking with customers over
the years, Oertel says he has
learned that if a homeowner has
been unhappy with a restucco
job by another company in the
past, it is because the contractor,
a) did poor work; b) provided
no one for the customer to com-
municate with; c) the company
owner was unavailable; or, d)
problems were not addressed.
Oertel is hands-on with every
job, conducting a pre-job walk-
through with homeowners and
spelling out what to expect from
his crews. Hes at the job site for
the start of every project,
inspects each phase thereafter,
and does the final walk-through,
assuring each job is completed
in a timely, professional manner
to the high quality specifications
of all Professional Coatings

house, Oertel says. Based on
the scope of the project, I wont
do anything to your home that I
wouldnt do to my own.
A variety of considerations
are involved in restuccoing a
home, and consumers face
many choices when it comes to

painting over your stucco is
never a good idea because
paint will eventually trap
moisture and cause the
color coat and outer surface
of the base coat to weaken.
There are certain prod-
ucts and application meth-
ods that we have learned
dont work well, says
Oertel. Professional
Coatings prefers the old-
fashioned method of apply-
ing stucco with a hand trowel.
Though the process is labor
intensive, hand troweling pro-
vides the tightest bond between
the stucco and substrate in con-
trast to other methods such as
spraying. These other methods
also allow the thinning or
stretching of stucco, a no-no in
Oertels book. We exceed New
Mexico state codes and manu-
facturers highest specifica-
tions, he explains. We do not
cut corners, and we do not
stretch the materials in any
way.
Professional Coatings spe-
cializes in complete stucco
restorations of homes and yard
walls with exterior wall space
ranging in size from a minimum
1,500 square feet to well over
18,000 square feet. While many
stucco applicators focus mainly
on the bid, Oertel takes a con-
sultative approach with clients.
Unlike many others in the busi-
ness, I wont just tell you what
you want to hear, says Oertel.
I propose what is needed for a
lasting restucco.
In determining the scope of
work, Oertel discusses goals
and visions with his clients.
Why are you looking at restuc-
coing? Are you installing new
windows? Are your homes
parapets damaged? Is your stuc-
co faded? What are the land-
scaping considerations; does the
property contain numerous,
high-moisture areas such as:
flower beds, sprinklers and roof
stucco products and application
methods. To begin with, there is
traditional stucco, a cement-
based, concrete-like product;
and synthetic stucco, a 100-per-
cent acrylic/elastomeric prod-
ucts. Synthetic stucco is
a great product, says
Oertel, but its not right
for everyone, or each
application.
Its absolutely essen-
tial that homeowners be
aware of the potential
pitfalls of stucco restoration.
Anyone can put a color coat (of
stucco) on and make it look
good, says Oertel. But when
the work is not done properly,
problems will typically occur
within one to five years.
Applying stucco over an
improperly repaired and/or
cured basecoat can result in a
weak substrate the surface or
base on which it is applied.
Putting stucco over a poor
basecoat or a severely deterio-
rated, painted or textured coat-
ing surface is risky and cant be
trusted, Oertel says. When new
stucco is applied over painted
stucco, the paint becomes the
substrate, and paint is not a reli-
able foundation. Furthermore,

needed a hero.
When problems with the
$8,000 heating and cooling unit
installed in their home became
apparent, they needed help. An
original erroneous load calcu-
lation led to a contractor
installing an over-sized unit in
their home. That unit had been
overheating and using its emer-
gency shut off mechanism con-
sistently, and unknowingly, the
ODonnells were in constant
fire danger.
More than a year into the
effort to get the original contrac-
tor to take care of the problem,
the ODonnells found Mario
LoPrinzi, owner of Axiom
Home Services.
Mario came out of the blue
and was the guy in the white hat
for us, Chris ODonnell says.
He did a calculation and con-
tacted the manufacturer about
the problems we were having.
He got their rep involved and
from there we got a lot of atten-
tion.
He must be highly regarded
with this particular manufactur-
er, Chris adds. He met with
them, explained the danger and
they replaced the unit for us and
covered the installation by
Mario.
In the heating and cooling
industry for 35 years, Mario
holds an MM98 the highest
certification for air conditioning
and plumbing and is well-
respected in the mechanical
community. While certified for
both residential and commercial
servicing, Axiom Home

year of our two-year process and
saw it to the end. He took care of
us and I consider him a friend.

heaters and 95-percent-efficient
furnaces.

naces. I cut $70 a month off my

Tree-form cacti that are
grown indoors can reach heights
that require them to be pruned.
Most cacti can be cut back. The
lower portion will probably
develop new branches, and the
upper portion (the part that was
cut off) may be induced to form
roots.
First and foremost, I advise
caution. Handling a cactus can
create a hazard for eyes and
flesh. I would suggest you have
large kitchen tongs (appropriate
to the size of the cactus) avail-
able. It may also be wise to take
some newspaper rolled diago-
nally to create a long, flexible
tube that can be wrapped around
the cactus stem to provide a han-
dle. The spines may pierce the
wrapped portion and spear the
gardener, so use caution!
Goggles or safety glasses (or at
the very least, regular glasses)
should provide eye protection.
Take the cactus outside or to
an indoor area where you can
lay the pot and cactus on its side
(not essential, but it makes the
job easier). If indoors, lay a
sheet of plastic under the pot and
the region of the cactus where
you will make the cut. Several
thicknesses of newspaper may
also be put on top and/or under
the plastic for additional protec-
tion for carpets and flooring, and
to facilitate cleanup.
Have a large knife and a saw
handy. The inside of the cactus
stem may be quite woody and
require a pruning saw. An assis-
tant will be useful to hold the
cactus steady, with rolled news-
papers and tongs, while it is

days to allow the cut surface to
close the wound. These pieces
may then be put into a moist
(not soggy), well-drained pot-
ting soil and allowed to form
roots. Do not put them in direct
sunlight, but in a bright location
until roots form. As the soil
dries, add water, but high mois-
ture is not needed for most cacti.
The base of the cactus, from
which the top has been cut, may
be returned to its usual growing
location and managed as before.
If the base is healthy and

receives adequate light, it should
produce branches from one of
the nodes (locations where the
spines are produced). This may
take months. Watering can be as
before, and nutrients may be
provided occasionally. Dont try
to rush growth by fertilizing, but
do provide some nutrients. Cacti
are not heavy feeders.

blue flowers, but in winter it
loses its leaves. Space 18 on

Vinca Minor. A true vine
that can be used in sun or
shade. Bluish blooms plus its
ability to spread to cover large
areas make this evergreen a

Wall Germander. This
sub-shrub has it all. Evergreen,
drought tolerant, lavender
blooms and insect resistance
make this the perfect plant for
those hard-to-plant small

English Ivy. This is the
ground cover of the South.
Evergreen, surprisingly
drought tolerant and great for
shade areas, this versatile plant
can also grow in part sun if it is
planted in early spring or fall
so it has a chance to acclimate
to the sun. Space two foot on

Blue Chip Juniper. We
spend more time removing
juniper than planting it in my
business usually, but this is one
variety that I like. It stays
under six inches tall, is very
drought tolerant and ever-
green, and one plant will
spread to at least eight feet.
