ECLIPSES
Sun is a source of light and heavenly bodies are continuously
revolving around it. So these also cast their shadows in the space. It may
also happen that the shadow of a heavenly body falls on the surface of
another heavenly body. When an object moves I front of the another it
blocks its light. This formation of shadow cast by a heavenly body over the
other is called eclipse.

Types of eclipses
• There are two types of eclipses

• Solar eclipse (click here)

• Lunar eclipse (click here)

The Solar eclipse
The solar eclipse is the shadow of the moon on certain part of
the earth. It occurs on a new moon day when the sun, the moon
and the earth happen to be in a straight line with the moon
coming in between the sun and the earth. Since the earth is
much larger than the moon,it cannot get completely covered by
umbra cone of the shadow formed by moon. We therefore ,get a
solar eclipse only on a certain part of the earth at a given time.

At any given time , the solar eclipse can be complete over

some parts of the earth, partial in some parts and not there at all
visible in some other parts of the earth. This can be associated with
the fact that the source of light (the sun) is very much bigger in
size than the obstacle (the moon).
Solar eclipse cannot be seen on every new moon day. This is
because the orbit of the moon around the earth, is not quite the
same as that of the earth’s orbit around the sun. The two
paths are tilted with respect to each other. Because of this, it is only
rare that the sun, the earth and the moon lie on a straight line on a
new moon day. we therefore, see a solar eclipse only on rare
occasions.

The Lunar eclipse

The lunar eclipse can be regarded as the shadow of the earth
on the moon. It occurs on a full moon day, when the sun, the moon
and the earth happen to be in a straight line, with the earth between
the sun and the moon. In such a case, the earth cuts off the sun
light and does not laminate the surface of moon.this results in a
lunar eclipse.

The lunar eclipse can be total or partial. The earth is very

much bigger than the moon and we therefore, have situations
when the moon lies wholly with in the umbra cone of the earth’s
shadow. The lunar eclipse, in such a case, is complete. Sometimes,
the moon lies only partially with in the umbra of the earth’s
shadow. The lunar eclipse is then only partial.
Lunar eclipse cannot be seen on every new moon day. This is
because the orbit of the moon around the earth is not quite the
same as that of the earth’s orbit around the sun. The two paths are
tilted with respect to each other. Because of this, it is only rare that
the sun, the earth and the moon lie on a straight line on a new
moon day. We therefore, see a lunar eclipse only on rare occasions.
