OS Introduction Operating System have adjusted and grown to the needs of a users. At the beginning the

operating system where establish by inserting a disk and then typing the commands out. Then the gradual move or transformations happen with graphic user interface (GUI). This changed the whole dynamics of the OS as we all know it. The main function of the OS is to establish the communication between the user and the hardware devices. Without the OS we will not be able to print, fax, email and gaming for that matter. Operating Systems Windows Windows Operating system began with Gates and Allen back in the mid 1970s with the high hopes for the future with computers. IBM approached them and wanted an operating system that can help boom the computer business. That is when Microsoft established their first OS MSDOS, which was the bridge between the user and the hardware. MS-DOS was a success and allowing the user to communicate with the computers through a command line and typing out the commands for the hardware. Thus this innovation opens the door that a new OS needed to be developed to be easier for the future. MAC OS Apple introduced the Macintosh computers in the 1980s that all came with the MAC OS already loaded on them. Macintosh is given the credited for introducing the graphical user interface (GUI). When Apple launched its first OS, it gave the user the ability to use a mouse to interact with the computer versus typing out the commands that the user wanted to accomplish, thus making it a more user friendly based OS. System was the first MAC OS that had the GUI

OS and from there the rest was history with the boom and changes made to the MAC OS it is an OS that is still used today. UNIX OS UNIX was owned by ATT and without UNIX OSs the possibility of internet, e-commerce,

and cell phone calls would not exist due to the UNIX OS. They are responsible for all the luxury things we have enjoyed today. UNIX started with a group of individual that were driven by research. Now it can be found as free software throughout the world. Factors of Upgrading OS Throughout the history of OS there have been many changes that have led to some changes in the world of the operating system, some replaced, others forgotten or others simply upgraded. There are many factors that can influence the user to make the changes in operating system. Stability factor, in my mind has the major influence in upgrading the OS. Stability factor is the how stable the OS a user has is. Does the OS crashes, freezes, and are there any bugs in the system. A user wants a stable OS that he or she does not have to worry about crashing and keeps him or her to loose time. Another factor is dependability that also influences the change in OS. OS have a signing program with other software and hardware that allows minimizing the any miscommunication. This component also allows the restore function that can restore a computer to the last known date that the computer was running properly and erase everything after that. Upgrade factor is looking into the see if the components that that the users has will support an upgrade. The OS that is already installed needs to be defined to see if it will support an upgrade. Another thought that is needed to be given thought is if the user wants a clean upgrade

OS

or just upgrade the computer. A clean upgrade is wiping the computer and making the change of OS and it makes the computer to be as new. Registration factor minimizes the piracy. This factor allows for the user to upload an OS to one computer only. It gives the user a 30 time frame from uploading the OS and then you will have to register OS. Three Components Kernel The kernels function is basically responsible for memory, process, files, the main input and output and communication factors between the user and the hardware. The kernel also has the duty of data communication and the application and also the resources for the hardware. Shell The shell allows the users to control hardware without having to know the characteristics of the hardware. This allows the user to control such as to print, fax, and scan. The shell has the responsibility of the bridge communication to and from the user and hardware. File System The file system allows the user to store files in the memory of the computer. Yet not only does it store it does it in a fashion of a tree hierarchy, which groups data together accordingly to their properties. Windows OS The OS of windows have change tragically throughout the years. Windows MS-DOS started from a command line to GUI. MS-DOS was the first Windows OS that gave the user the ability to communicate and use the hardware the computer has available to him or her. Then the introduction of Window 1.0 was the

OS newer version of OS that move to a GUI. This OS also had the capability of drop screens, scroll bars and icons. Then Windows 2.0-2.11 had changes to the memory increase and graphics. Windows 3.0 was then released years after and was the most OS widely used for its time. Windows went back to the drawing board and decided to make changes to virtual memory that will increase visual graphics. Pcs started to run faster and load software faster and in this era the

gaming to the pc where introduce. Windows NT was then build from ground up with a 32-bit OS Windows 95 was introduced and then this OS became one of the most popular for its time. The new concept of plug and play was introduced for computers that allow for the OS to install the software needed to operate the hardware. This OS also supported the internet and gave the possibility to dial up and with the new integrations of maximizing, minimizing and closing windows was also a new feature. Windows98, Windows ME and Windows 2000 Professional hit the market after that and WIN98 was designed for the consumer which ran faster, Windows ME was more for the home users that allow for a home network to be establish and then Windows 2000 Professional targeted the business and allow for the plug and play on a larger scale of equipment for a business standpoint. Windows XP and Window Vista came into to the world and became to be a more of a worldwide establish OS. XP center its upgrades on stabilizing and unified, while Vista was more for the security purposes from the internet threads that were occurring. Which brings to the Windows 7 and has establish itself as an OS that has security measures that protect, the graphic qualities and its designed for the home users, laptops, and office. Conclusion

OS In conclusion, without the OS we are the users would not be able to communicate with the

hardware and enjoy the technology of todays age. OS are responsible for the internet, cell phone use, gaming and the simple functions that are there. As for me the experience have been to a limit and I have only dealt with a Windows Vista that crashed on me, XP at work that runs really slow and needs have and upgrade and at home I am happy with the new Windows 7.
