9. Sulphur dioxide is formed when coal is burnt in a power station.

(a) The coal used in the power station contains 1.5% of sulphur by the mass. Calculate the volume of sulphur

dioxide released, measured at room temperature and pressure, when 1.0 kg of the coal is burnt.

(You may assume that all the sulphur in coal is converted to sulphur dioxide upon burning.)

(b) State ONE environmental problem associated with the emission of sulphur dioxide into the atmosphere.

(c) Suggest ONE measure to reduce the emission of sulphur dioxide from the power station.

(d) Particulates are also present in the flue gas generated in the power station.

(i) State ONE environmental problem associated with the discharge of particulates into the atmosphere.

(ii) Suggest ONE way to remove particulates from the flue gas.

10. Organic wastes can be used as an alternative energy source. Under suitable conditions, the wastes can be digested

by bacteria to give a gaseous mixture containing a high proportion of methane. Methane can be used as fuel.

(a) Suggest ONE organic waste that can be used for this purpose.

(b) Write the chemical equation for the complete combustion of methane.

(c) Suggest ONE advantage of using organic wastes as an alternative energy source.

(d) Suggest ONE reason why organic wastes are not yet widely used as an energy source.

11. A policeman suspected a car driver to have drunk an excessive amount of alcoholic drinks, and used a dichromate

breathalyser to conduct a test on the driver’s breath. The result was positive.

(a) State the principle underlying the test of ethanol using a dichromate breathalyser.

(b) The driver claimed that he had just rinsed his mouth using ethanol-containing mouthwash. Without using other

instruments, suggest how the policeman could check whether the driver’s claim was valid or not. Explain your
