THEATER SCRIPT: “Battle of Puebla”

CHARACTERS:
Soldier one.
Soldier two.
General Ignacio Zaragoza.
Soldier three.
President Benito Juárez.
General Laurencez.
Narrator 1.
Narrator 2.

Narrator 1.
The French intervention originated in the city of Puebla on May 5, 1862, the French
general Conde de Lorencez attacked the city, which was defended by General
Ignacio Zaragoza. Puebla was protected by the Forts of Loreto and Guadalupe, the
French attacked forcefully, but three times the Mexicans resisted the attack and
finally defeated the invaders supported by the people of Zacapoaxtla.

Narrator 2. ( Don Benito Juárez, a Frenchman, a Spaniard and an Englishman enter)


In 1860, during the government of Don Benito Juárez, the country was going through a
very difficult economic situation, so the suspension of payments on the debts contracted
with England, France and Spain was declared, for this reason they prepared to invade
Mexico.

Narrator 1. (The Spanish and the English shake hands with Don Benito Juárez and leave)
(the French general approaches his army)
These countries reached an agreement with the Mexican government, but France did not
want to comply with it and the French general Conde Lorencez decided to invade the
national territory.

Narrator 2.
Meanwhile, the soldiers he had sent for showed up at General Ignacio Zaragoza's
headquarters.

(Three children dressed as Mexican soldiers come out and stand in front of General
Zaragoza's desk)

Soldier One: Did my general order us to speak?


Soldier Two: What's wrong, why does he have that distressed face?

General Ignacio Zaragoza: (With a worried face, touching his chin) I have been warned
that foreign forces want to attack us, be prepared, get your rifles ready and warn the
others, in the meantime I will go see the president to tell him. (leaves the stage)
Narrator 1.
-Then in the presidency of the Republic:
(At the other end of the stage, President Benito Juárez enters and sits in his chair with an
elegant and serious demeanor) (A child dressed as a soldier approaches the president)

Soldier 3: Mr. President, General Zaragoza has arrived, he wants to talk to you, he says it
is urgent.

Benito Juárez: Good, let him in (the soldier walks away and goes towards the general to
let him in)

Soldier 3: Come in (bowing).

Benito Juárez: ( sitting in his chair, he gets up quickly when he sees the general's worried
face) What's wrong, general? Why do you have that face?

General Ignacio Zaragoza : (Concerned) The French have come to Mexico because they
want to be paid what we owe with our land.

Benito Juárez: (He holds his head, moving it sideways) It can't be, if I spoke with them
and told them that I would pay them in two years.

General Ignacio Zaragoza: Yes, president! England and Spain accepted, but France, No.

Benito Juárez: Then we will attack even though we are not prepared and we do not have
many weapons or soldiers, but together we will win, they will not be able to take over our
land. Let's go with everything!

General Ignacio Zaragoza: (Shakes hands with the president) Very well, we will do it this
way (Exits the stage)

Benito Juárez: (He leaves the stage).

(French soldiers enter singing and marching)


(Mexican soldiers enter singing and marching)

(A child dressed as General Laurencez enters the stage: French, with a commanding
voice).
General Laurencez: You are surrounded, there are many of us, give up your land
(Speaking with a foreign accent)

General Ignacio Zaragoza: (Enter the other end of the stage) Come on, we won't give up!
(The Mexican soldiers take refuge and the battle begins with the Mexicans winning and the
French surrendering to the fight).

Narrator 2.
On May 5, 1862, in the limits of the city of Puebla, the French invaders were stopped in a
memorable battle by the troops of General Ignacio Zaragoza. Finally, faced with the
inability to consolidate an empire, and after losing 11,000 men The French withdrew
unconditionally from the country in 1867.
