not just colors; these are sweeteners that
dominate the sugar substitute market.
More specifcally, these are examples
of artifcial sweeteners that are favored
by millions of Americans. A growing
demand for choice, however, means
there is a new group in the sweetener
club - natural sweeteners.
Natural sweeteners are commonly
understood as sweeteners that are
derived from plants, fruits or vegetables
and contain no artifcial or synthetic
components. Some are low in calories;
some are not.
For people looking for new ways to
sweeten and enjoy their favorite foods,
however, they can be a great option,
says nutrition expert and Registered
Dietician, Molly Kimball. They taste
delicious and are easy to incorporate
into any lifestyle.
Natural sweeteners really do get their
start in nature. Take Truvia(R), a popu-
lar, zero-calorie natural sweetener, for
example. Truvia(R) is the brand name
for rebiana, a natural sweetener derived
from the stevia plant.
The stevia plant was discovered more
than 200 years ago in South America
and has been used as a sweetener in
various parts of the world for more than
three decades. To make the sweetener,
the leaves are harvested and dried, and
then steeped in fresh water in a process
similar to that of making tea. This
unlocks the best-tasting part of the leaf,
which is then further purifed so it is
ready for use in foods.
In line with recent food trends, consum-
ers are demanding more natural prod-
ucts - naturally sweetened, naturally
favored and the like. Brands responded
with entire lines of naturally sweetened
goods using sweeteners like Truvia(R)
rebiana.
Natural sweeteners are easier to
fnd than most people think, says
Kimball. It is impossible to walk down
the grocery aisle and not see new,
naturally sweetened varieties of well-
known brands. Take new Crystal Light
Pure, for example. Its sweetened with
sugar and Truvia(R) rebiana, making
it a great choice for someone looking
for a naturally sweetened, low-calorie
beverage. Crystal Light Pure contains
15 calories and 4 grams of sugar per 8
fuid-ounce serving.
In the end, it all comes back to
consumer choice and consumers are
reaching for natural sweeteners.

(ARA) - Whether tailgating, playing a game of catch with
the kids, cheering on your favorite team from the stands
or calling plays from the couch - fall means football. A
few simple tips can keep outdoor projects from running
interference on your weekend game schedule.
Here are 10- to
15-minute garden
and lawn drills to
keep your focus
on the game and
yard work on the
sideline this fall:
September:
* Lawns can get damaged when kids and pets play on
grass that is still wilting from summer heat and drought.
Spruce up your lawn by reseeding with a quality grass
seed and lawn food specifcally designed to help seed
germinate, like Scotts Starter Fertilizer. Fall is the best
time for grass. Keep the seed and young grass watered
and hold off on any weed control until the new grass has
been mowed four times.
* Feed the grass. The difference between so-so grass
and truly beautiful grass, both now and next spring, is
two fall feedings. Feeding in early September helps your
lawn begin rebuilding grass roots that were damaged
during the hot, dry summer. Feed again in late October to
prepare for winter, using Scotts Winter Guard once new
seed is established.
* Create patches of color in your landscape by flling pots
with fall fora. Replace tired-looking summer plants with
mums, asters, pansies and fowering cabbage. Look for
special displays at local garden centers and add Miracle-
Gro potting soil to your containers for big, beautiful
blooms.
* Clean up the garden. Perennials may now be past their
prime and the summertime vegetable garden may be
looking a bit sparse. If so, cut them back. This will help
keep bugs and disease away. Use what you cut to start a
compost pile.
October:
* Prevent tree leaves from smothering grass. Contrary to
popular belief, fallen tree leaves will not insulate the lawn
during winter. In fact, they can block vital sunlight and
cause turf to thin. So, drop the rake and mulch leaves
to dime-sized pieces with a lawn mower. Leave clippings
on the lawn to allow leaves to recycle back into the soil,
providing food for earthworms and soil microbes.
* Plant spring-blooming bulbs now for bursts of color
later. Visit a local garden center for a great selection of
daffodil, crocus, hyacinth, tulip and other spring-fow-
ering bulbs. Plant in masses or tuck patches into other
beds for a surprise of spring color. Feed with Miracle-Gro
Organic Choice Bone Meal for strong root development.
* Due to cooler temperatures, fall is a great time to plant
a tree or shrub. Soils stay warm late into the fall which
allows for good root development and less transplant
shock. Roots will also have an easier time starting new
growth again in early spring, and plants are often on
sale in autumn. Be sure to use Miracle-Gro Quick Start
Transplant Starting Solution to help prevent transplant
shock and provide essential nutrients.
November:
Mow at a summer height of 2 to 3 inches until your
grass stops growing - into early winter. Do not lower your
height for the fnal cut.
* Clean up tools for a fresh start next spring. They have
served you well all season, but now it is time to put them
away. To prevent rusting, give tools a good cleaning
before hanging up, and then spray a light coating of
common household oil. When fnished mowing for the
year, perform any mower maintenance before storage for
winter. Sharpen mower blades, change the spark plug,
and be sure to drain the gas or run the engine dry of fuel.
With these quick drills in the rotation, the garden
and lawn will stay in tip-top shape leaving plenty of
time to catch games. They also will look great for any
impromptu tailgate parties. These simple tasks will make
life easier next spring and give the garden and lawn a
head start.

And the same holds true when the family member
has fur and walks on four legs.
One out of three family pets will go missing during
its lifetime according to HomeAgain Pet Recovery
Service. Noisy holiday celebrations like the Fourth
of July and New Years Eve, natural disasters and
everyday oversights like open windows and doors
frequently cause pets to become separated from
their families.
Finding a lost pet isnt easy. You have to rely on
others to help you reconnect. But there are happy
stories like that of Dakota, a Siberian husky, who
wandered from her home in New Mexico in
December 2010 and was found three months later
about 1,800 miles away in North Carolina. It was
a microchip that helped reunite Dakota with her
owner, Audra Roberts.
Here are some ways to help keep your pet safe and
to help fnd your pet if it does get lost:
* Collar tags
Since your dog or cat cant communicate an address
or phone number, its imperative that you do it for
him. Without identifcation, 90 percent of lost pets
wont return home, according to HomeAgain. Make
sure your pet has ID tags on his collar that provide
some way for a person to connect with you - wheth-
er its an address, phone number or even email. An
unattended animal with tags is more likely to be
rescued because he seems to be someones lost pet.
* Microchipping
Microchips are a permanent form of identifcation
and are essential to help reunite you with a lost pet.
These tiny radio frequency identifcation devices
are inserted under the skin and can be scanned at
animal shelters and vet offces. Microchips contain
unique ID numbers that link to your contact infor-
mation in a national pet registry like HomeAgain.
When you enroll in the service and report your dog
or cat missing, a lost pet alert is sent to members of
the network who register to receive them within a
25-mile radius. A staffer will guide you through the
emotional process of fnding your pet. HomeAgain
has helped more than 850,000 pets reunite with
their families.
* Keep your contact information current
An old home address or telephone number wont
help you reunite with your pet. So make sure you
update your contact information at the vets offce,
with your microchip registry and on your pets tags.
* Review your backyard security
Dogs and cats are excellent diggers and cats can
jump to amazing heights. Frequently walk along
the fence line of your yard to spot any weak links in
fencing and to make sure your dog hasnt dug to the
center of the earth chasing an imaginary bone. Also
keep an eye on your pet in the backyard at all times,
because you never know when a loud noise could
spook your furry friend and cause him to attempt an
escape - by whatever means possible.
Your pet is a member of your family, and its impor-
tant to keep him safe, both at home and while on
the road. Make sure to give him a voice in case he
gets lost, so he can communicate - through tags and
a microchip - where he belongs.
