WIDE RECEIVER POSITIONTECHNIQUES, DRILLS & COACHING POINTS

I. STANCE/STARTSAll great plays begin with a great stance and start! Inside foot forward, pigeon toe the front foot! Good forward lean putting most of your weight on the front foot. Have a good Z in the back knee! Drive off the back foot gaining ground with that step! No false starts! Hand placement is up to the individual coach! Most of all, BE COMFORTABLE in your stance. CATCHING DRILLSCatch the ball first, then score! You catch the ball with your hands & EYES! You have to see it before you catch it! Above the waist, make the DIAMOND with the thumb and pointer finger. Below the waist, big hands and cross the pinkies! Tuck the ball each time, looking it in all the way! DRILLS 1. Catching Sequence 1Sideline to hash Out in front High ball Low ball Behind WR Bad Ball Distraction 2. Catching Sequence 220 yards in between WRs and Coach Straight, out in front Straight, high ball Straight, low ball Straight, bad ball Angle, out in front both ways Angle, high ball both ways Angle, low ball both ways Angle, bad ball both ways 3. Clock Drill WRs 10 yards apart, play catch! Work the ball around the clock. Hard throws each time. Turn sideways each way

FOOTWORK DRILLSGreat WRs have great hands, but it all starts with the feet! Must have quick feet! Must work on footwork daily! In-season and out of season! WRs need to be able to attack DBs at any angle! DRILLS 1. Foot-Firesget the feet used to moving quickly 4-5 lines on a yard line Move both feet as quickly as possible one at a time in front and behind the yard line. Dont forget to utilize the arms as well! On the whistle, plant and explode forward for 5 yards 2. Angle-Cut Drillemphasis on body movement and plant foot See Diagram! Coaching Points: 1. Start out half speed 2. 3 steps between cones 3. Keep eyes up! 4. Run your arms! 5. Turn your hipsdont shuffle! 6. Explode out of the break! 7. Do this going rt. and lt.

WRs 3. Square-Cut Drillemphasis on body movement and plant foot See Diagram! Coaching Points: 1. Cones can be at 5 or 10 yards apart. 2. Start out half speed 3. Keep eyes up! COACH 4. QUICK ROUTESHitch, Slant, Quick Out and Fade 1. Hitchsee diagram Attack DBs outside shoulder to a depth of 6 yards Sink hips, run arms, plant (keeping eyes up), turn and sit at 6 yards DONT work back to the QB! Catch, tuck and turn outside (circle the defense) and get upfieldSCORE!

2. Slantsee diagram Attack DBs outside shoulder to a depth of 5 yards Use a good head and shoulder fake to the outside Plant off of outside foot and explode inside the DB Catch, tuck and get upfield1 safety, work back to the outsideSCORE! 2 safeties, split themSCORE

3. Quick Outsee diagram Attack inside shoulder of DB to a depth of 5 yards Turn inside foot to a 45 degree angle and roll it as you turn out You should reach a depth of 6-7 yards on the roll and work back to 5. Catch, tuck and turn upfieldSCORE!

4. Fadesee diagram Attack inside shoulder of DB to a depth of 3-4 yards As DB turns his hips inside, explode outside gaining ground vertically Keep 2 yards from the sideline so WR can adjust to the ball Catch, tuck and get upfieldSCORE!
