Entrance Examination for Engineering
Education

Finnish Universities of Applied Sciences

Finland 29.4.2010

INSTRUCTIONS

The examination consists of two parts:

Part 1: Mathematics, Logical deduction,Physics and Chemistry.

Part 2: English language.

The test in Mathematics, Logical deduction, Physics and Chemistry

The duration is 2 hours and 30 minutes.

You may not leave the examination room within the first 30 minutes.

You may only bring your writing material (pencil, sharpener, rubber and ruler)
and your calculator to the examination. Formula books and dictionaries are not
allowed.

Answer sheets and extra paper are distributed with the exam papers.

There are 10 problems to be solved; each worth 3 points. Write your solutions
on the provided answer sheets.

Include calculation details whenever the solution requires
calculations.

For problems 8, 9 and 10, you have to choose either A (Physics) or B
(Chemistry). If you solve both, the one with the lower score will count.

Only solutions written on your answer sheets will be checked!

All papers must be returned.

Your mobile phone must be switched OFF!

2. A beer can is a cylinder with radius r=33 mm and with height h=187 mm. Six cans
are packed in a box in two different ways as illustrated below. The height of both
of the boxes is the same as the height of the can.

a) Below X is the bottom midpoint on the left side and Y and Z are bottom corner
points on the right side of the box in case A. Solve the angel measure between line
segments XY and XZ.

b) What is the percentage ratio between the combined area of six cylinder bottoms
and the area of box bottom in case A?

c) What is the volume of the box in case B?

Logical Deduction

5. When a screen is placed 3 metres from a projector, the picture occupies 3 square
metres. How large will the picture be when the projector is 5 metres from the
screen?

6. John, Paul and Tim were truck drivers. They were very good friends and wanted to
have a lunch break together. They all drove routes starting from the warehouse.
They could have a lunch break only when they had just returned from a journey.

Johns journey always lasted 20 minutes, Pauls 35 minutes and Tims 1 hour 5
minutes. Taking a new load always took 5 minutes. John loaded the first load at
07:00 and started the first journey at 07:05. Paul loaded the first load at 07:15
and started the first journey at 07:20. Tim loaded the first load at 07:25 and
started the first journey at 07:30.

When could they finally have lunch break together?

7. Wheel number 1 is rotated by a motor. A belt is used for transmitting power to the
other wheels. The wheels are of three different sizes: the radius is 2 cm, the radius
is 4 cm or the radius is 8 cm. The wheels and the belt can be seen in the picture.

The motor is running 900 rounds in a minute in a clockwise direction. Please fill in the
table in the answer sheet with the direction of rotation (clockwise = cw, counter
clockwise = ccw), rotational speed, and the number of rounds the wheel has done in
20 seconds.

Physics and Chemistry

Solve either problem 8.A or 8.B, not both. If you solve both, the one with the
lower score will be chosen as your answer.

8.A A subway train starts from rest at a station and accelerates at a rate of 1,20
m/s
2
for 20,0s. It runs at constant speed for 50,0 s and slows down at -3,00 m/s
2

until it stops at the next station. Find the total distance covered.

8.B Write structural formulas of all possible trichlorobenzenes and give names for
them.

Solve either problem 9.A or 9.B, not both. If you solve both, the one with the
lower score will be chosen as your answer.

9.A An insulated calorimeter contains 350 g of water at temperature of 95
o
C. A
370g sample of silver at a temperature of 11
o
C is dropped into the calorimeter.
Calculate the final temperature of water and the sample. Assume that no heat is lost
to the surroundings.

Specific heat of water c = 4,19 kJ/(
o
Ckg) and silver c = 234 kJ/(
o
Ckg).

Solve either problem 10.A or 10.B, not both. If you solve both, the one with
the lower score will be chosen as your answer.

10.A A complete circuit consists of a 18,0 V battery (internal resistance r) and a
resistor R. The terminal voltage of the circuit is 15,8 V and the current is 4,00 A.
What is a) the internal resistor r of the battery b) the resistance R of the circuit
resistor ?
