St.

Philip Neri Parish

The Northwest Paulist Center
for Evangelization & Reconciliation

2408 SE 16th Ave., Portland, OR 97214-5334

PARISH MISSION STATEMENT Committed to the mission of Jesus and dedicated to be welcoming to all, we the community of St. Philip Neri strive to reach out, to reconcile and to promote unity for all of Gods creation through worship, education, and service toward the common good.

Sunday's the day! The parish's oldest and biggest fundraising

event, the Spaghetti and Meatball Dinner, is noon to 5:30 PM this weekend. No success is without community effort. We count on you to help by volunteering and by joining us in Carvlin Hall for a wholesome and hearty meal. Nothing frozen or preserved, just the good stuff. And that goes for the vegetarian sauce, too. Support your parish. See you there!

Childrens Faith Formation last Sunday

A big thank you to Sr. Pat, Sr. Sharon and Patrick Murphy for
cleaning the upstairs old church. It is greatly appreciated by parish staff and the attendees of the event that was held in this beautiful space.

I love the feast of St. Francis and below is a reflection by my good friend, Fr. Richard Chilson, CSP -- Thanks Dick.

Fr. Michael Evernden, CSP

The Many Faces of Francis

St Francis may be the most popular saint. He crosses denominational boundaries. And he shows a number of different faces to his admirers. First, there is Francis, the holy fool. When he decided to embrace Lady Poverty he threw off his clothes in the public square and the bishop had to hide him in his cope to avoid scandal. With his wandering through Italy he is the forerunner of the hippies. Francis is for the birds. Literally. He preaches to the birds. He convinces the wolf of Gubbio to convince him not to harm the villagers. On his feastday people bring their pets to the church to have them blessed. That he appears as a figure for a bird bath trivializes him. Francis embraces the cross. No one sought to imitate Jesus more than Francis. Even to the point of bearing his wounds. Francis claimed that perfect joy would be to be beaten half dead for the sake of Christ. Francis means Christmas. He invented the manger which now is the heart of most Christmas decorations. Francis may have been a Sufi. He went to the Middle East to convert the Sultan. That didnt happen. But in spite of his failure he stayed there for years. When he came home he brought a number of stories, the Fioretti, some of which are also found in the Sufi schools. His love of mysticism is probably derived from the Sufis. Francis the peacemaker. The Sultan gave Francis ownership of all the Christian shrines. Why? Because Francis was the first Westerner to arrive there without a sword. Francis the religious reformer. The Franciscan communities were new forms of religious orders. He and his fellow Dominic took the monks out of the cloister into the streets. Francis inspired a Renaissance. In his wake he left a new Europe. He celebrated the beauties of creation. His community produced thinkers like Bonaventure and Duns Scotus who renewed theology. He wrote poetry - The Canticle of the Sun. And he in turn inspired the troubadours. And from them we see the rise of courtly love. St Francis hospital in San Francisco stands near the Tenderloin - the skids of the city. And St Francis never turns anyone away for lack of money or insurance.
