Although the national schools represent a mere 3.3 per cent of all schools, almost
one fifth of Sri Lankan children are attending those schools.

Navodya schools, which were selected to be developed under DSD schools

project in year 2001, were started with the intention of reducing the existing high
demand for the national schools. There were 457 such schools in July 2006.
