Instructions: Read Carefully Before Proceeding. 1- Book or other aids are not permitted for this test. 2- Use of calculators is allowed in this exam. 3- Write your solutions in the space provided. If you need more space, write on the back of the sheet containing the problem and make a clear mark that you are using the back. 4- Indicate clearly the sub-problem number (e.g 3.a) before each sub-answer and separate your answers by a horizontal lines 5- Attempt as much of the problems as you can within the time limits. The more you solve the higher your score is expected to be. 6- Read all the problems carefully before starting, and start with the easiest question you find. 7- This exam booklet contains 12 pages, including this one. Extra sheets of scratch paper are attached and have to be kept attached. 8- The last sheet include formulas needed for the exam ( feel free to de-attach these sheets) 9- When you are told that time is up, stop working on the test. 10- Total time allowed for this exam is 120 min. Good Luck!

Consider a wireless system shown above. The system operates at a carrier frequency of 600 MHz and supports a bandwidth of 20 MHz. Power input to the BS1mplifier is PTx . Both the transmitter and receiver use similar amplifiers that have a gain of 10 dB and a noise figure of 4 dB. Both the transmitter and receiver antennas have an antenna gain of 3 dB and their feed lines introduce an attenuation of 1.5 dB and add noise with a noise figure equal to 1.5 dB. The receiver has a unit gain mixer with a noise figure of 1 dB. The distance between the transmitter and receiver is equal to d meter. It is required that the min signal power to average noise remain below 5 dB in order to be able to properly reconstruct the received signal (after the mixer). For this system Calculate a) b) c) d) The transmitter equivalent gain and noise figure The receiver equivalent gain and noise figure The channel equivalent gain and noise figure (as a function of the distance d ) The power PRx |dB as a function of the distance d and PTx |dB (2 Mark) (2 Mark) (4 Mark) (3 Mark)

e) Power fading margin as a function of n and d where Pr(outage) = 10 n (3 Mark) n f) Minimum faded power Pmin needed to ensure a maximum outage of Pr(outage) = 10 (as a function of d , PTx |dB and n ) (3 Mark) g) The system overall gain and noise figure (as a function of d ), for a sub-urban environment (5 Mark) h) The maximum distance d that can be supported for this system (assuming it operates in an sub-urban environment and that PTx = .3W and n =2) (3 Mark)

In the figure shown above Assume that: i. The mobile user (car) MS is receiving from BS1. ii. That power transmitted by BS2 represent interference to MS iii. The system operates in a suburban environment. iv. MS hands over from BS1 to BS2 when the carrier (form BS2) to interference power (assuming BS1 is the interferer) is bigger than the Carrier (from BS1) to Interference v. Incoming signals to MS form BS1 and BS2 are both subject to independent 6 dB log-normal large-scale fading a) Derive an expression for the ratio of carrier power to interference power as a function of (5 Marks) d1 , d 2 , h1 , h2 , h3 and the transmitted power P and P2 (in dB) 1 b) Ignore the effect of fading and find the distance d1 at which the handover occurs. (5 Marks) c) In case fading is considered write an expression for the probability that the signal to interference is ~ (6 Marks) smaller than a given value at given distance d1 d) For a distance d1 write an expression for the probability that a handover (from BS1 to BS2) has occurred. of the signal and f doppler is the Doppler frequency shift. a) Derive expressions for the level crossing rate N (rth ) and the average duration of fades ADF( rth ) in 2 terms of the fading margin M = r 2 rth rather than in terms of 0 . (4 Marks) d) For both part (b) and (d) Assume that the system uses FDM with a total system BW of 5 MHz/s and that each of the mobile users uses an application that requires a 4k/hz of BW. Question 4

(15 Marks)

A receiver in an urban cellular radio system detects a 2 mW signal at d=do= 1.5 meter from the transmitter. In order to mitigate co-channel interference effects, it is required that the signal received at any base station receiver from another base station transmitter which operates with the same channel must be below -100 dBm. A measurement team has determined that the average path loss exponent in the system is n = 3. Determine the major radius of each cell if a seven-cell reuse pattern is used?
