SALVATION GUIDE TABLE OF CONTENTS I. II. III. IV.

THE BRIDGE A CHOICE OF TWO THE ONLY WAY WHAT BORN AGAIN REALLY MEANS ETERNAL LIFE IN HEAVEN OR HELL, YOUR CHOICE FORMULA OF SALVATION INTRODUCTION: Man instinctively seeks fellowship with God One of me more fascinating history studies to make is to trace how all recorded cultures throughout time have shown evidence of this. It has been expressed in diverse ways. From the very simple animal offerings and grains sacrifices of primitive men to elaborate systems of religion. You and I are no exceptionat one time or another we all feel drawn toward God, however hazy or mistaken. Our notion of him maybe, no doubt many among you are here in response to this instinct... whether expressed as a cry of desperation. Or an emptiness that will not go away... or a guilt feeling that keeps gnawing at your guts. Or all of the above. Man has acted on this instinct in different ways.. but there are common patterns one can see from a study of history and archeology... can you think of some? We are hoping to bridge the gap that separates us from God by doing good works... the golden rule.. a balance scale of works vs. sins... We art trying to reach God through behavioral laws and norms.. System of ethics... examples would be the Koran, various philosophies. Man is continually trying to reach God through his own efforts such as good works, religion and philosophy. Man is separated Eph. 2:8-9 doing good... the golden rule. Balance scale Rom: 3:28 the 10 commandments misunderstood. Gal. 2:16 systems of ethics a. Man is separated (See Illustration 2 The Long Jump) Rom. 10:1-2 religion (Eph 2:8-9, Rom 3:28; Gal 2:16; Rom. 10:1-2; Titus 3:5; John 14:16) Titus 3:5 not our own righteousness b. Sin (John 3:16; Isa.59:2; Rom. 3:23; Jm.2:10) c. Death Judgment (Heb. 9:27; Rom 6:23; Rev 21:8) 2. Solution (Rom.5:6-8; 1Pet. 3:18; 1Pet 2:24) There seem to be many ways... yet God tells us there is only one way to him John 14:6 Jesus is the only way to the Father TO UNDERSTAND WHY THIS IS SO, WE NEED TO UNDERSTAND ONE THING CLEARLY. GOD LOVES US AND WANTS to BRING ALL OF US TO HIMSELF. BUT WE HAVE A PROBLEM THAT PREVENTS THIS... SIN! Sin!!! John 3:16 we have problem... and it will inevitably cause us to perish unless resolved... Sin!!! Isaiah 59:2 there is chasm between God and us. Rom. 3:23 we have all sinned James 2:10 we all fall short Death-Judgment

God isnt limited by science, Jimmy responded. He created science! Engaged by Jimmys outspoken faith, the teacher proposed a scientific experiment. Reaching into his refrigerator, he produced a raw egg and held it up. Im going to drop this egg on the floor, he stated. Gravity will pull it toward the floor with such force that the egg will most certainly break. Fixing Jimmy with a look of challenge. He concluded his proposal. Now Jimmy, I want you to pray. A prayer right now and ask your God to keep this egg from breaking when it hits the floor. If He can do that, then youll have proven your point. And Ill have to admit that there is a God. After pondering the challenge for a moment, Jimmy slowly stood to pray, Dear heavenly father, he began. I pray that when my teacher drops the egg it will break into a hundred pieces! And also, Lord, I pray that when the egg does break my teacher will have a heart attack and die! Amen. After unison gasp the stunned class sat in silence expectation. For a moment the teacher did nothing. At last he looked at Jimmy and then at the egg. Without a word, he carefully put the egg back in the refrigerator. Class dismissed. The teacher said and sat down to clear his lesson. Application The teacher apparently believed in God more than he taught he did. Many people like the teacher, deny God exists, yet they ran from Him, question Him and attack him whenever they get a chance. Jimmy knew God wouldnt strike his teacher dead, but he also knew that his teacher wouldnt bet his life for on it. As the old saying goes, there are no atheists in fact, fools. When your life is on the line, the idea of God only makes a lot more sense. THE LONG JUMP Imagine you are jogging one day with Mike a world record holder in long jump at twenty-nine feet, four inches. While you are running along, you hear a low rumble, and your feet sense a steadily increasing tremor that alerts you to the start of an earthquake like no other youve experienced. Suddenly a mere stride ahead of you and Mike, the earth splits open You both came to a full stop to discover that you are isolated on a small silver of earth separated from safety by a deep crevasse that is about thirty feet across. The little path of earth youre standing in is crumbling in the continuing upheaval and you see that its a matter or moment before you both are cast into the crevasse where youll be crushed by the lurching earth. Things look hopeless. Your only hoe is to jump across he canyon. Mike judges that the jump is about eight inches longer that his world record setting long jump, but he decides to try it anyway. He gets back as far as he can so he can gather as much speed as possible. He crouches into a three-point stance and you yell, On your mark! Get set! Go! Mike runs as fast as he can. Right on he edge of the crevasse, he kicks oft and launches himself into the air. Its a perfect long jump. Sailing over the crevasse he lands with the toes of both barely on the edge of the other side. His jump is amazing twenty nine feet six inches-two inches farther that his world record. Unfortunately, the jump isnt far enough His feet slip off the edge with his hands. Its no good though. As you watch he falls into the crevasse and dies poor Mike. Now its your turn. You crouch into a three-point stance as far from the take off edge as possible. Mentally giving yourself the signal, you spring forward Huffing and puffing, you pound up to the edge, kick-off and jump straight down into the crevasse Youre dead too.

TEACHER'S NOTE: LEAD STUDENTS THROUGH THE SINNERS' PRAYER Illustrations: BETTER NOT DROP THAT EGG The Easter story is nothing but a myth, Jimmys high school science teacher announced to his class a few days before Easter break. Jesus not only didnt rise from the grave, he continued. But theres no God in heaven who would allow his son to be crucified in the first place. Sir, I believe in God. Jimmy protested. And I believe in the resurrection! Jimmy, you can believe what you wish for to, of course, the teacher replied. However, the real world excludes the possibility of miraculous events such as the resurrection. The resurrection is a scientific impossibility. No one who believes in miracles can also respect the science.

APPLICATION It didnt matter that Mike nearly got to the other side with perfect world record long jump. It simply wasnt far enough judged by its final outcome. Mikes jump was no better than yours. Both of you died. Getting to the heaven side of eternal life works much the same way. It doesnt matter how good you live, how many churches services you attend, or how much better you are than other people. You cant save yourself. The best people in the world cant save themselves, for all have sinned and fall short (Romans 3:23). No one is good enough on his or her own. Thats why Jesus came. Hes the only one who can ever live a perfect life. When we put our faith and trust him and make Him as our Lord in our lives. His perfection becomes ours. He is the only one who can get us safely to the other side. THE TIGHTROPE AND THE WHEELBARROW The story is told of a great circus performer by the name of Blondin who stretch a long steel cable across Niagara Falls. During high winds and without a safety net, he walked, run, and even danced across the tightrope to the amazement and delight of a crowd of people who watched. Once he took a wheelbarrow full of bricks and amazed the crowd by pushing it effortlessly across the cable, from one side of the falls to the other. Blondin then turned to the crowd and asked, Now, how many of you believed that I could push a man across the wire in the wheelbarrow? The vote was unanimous. Everyone cheered and held their hands high. They believed he could do it! Then, asked Blondin, would one of you please volunteer to be that man? As quickly as the hands went up, they went back down. Not a single person would volunteer to ride in the wheelbarrow and trust his life to Blondin. APPLICATION: Many people say to Jesus, Yes, I believed! If you are among who say that, are you willing to demonstrate your belief by trusting your life to Him? Are you willing to get in the wheelbarrow and to risk everything on your faith? Thats what it means to believe. Faith is not just an intellectual exercise. It involves total commitment. I was a friend of Mark, the soldier said. I was the one he rescued. If I may come in for a few moments. I have something to show you. The two were soon in deep conversation. From the soldier the old man learned that Mark had rescued dozen of wounded soldiers before a bullet stilled his caring heart. The unfolding image of his sons gallantry awakened a fatherly pride that eased his grief. The soldier then recounted how often Mark had spoken about his fathers love of fine art. Placing the package on the old mans lap, the soldier told him. Im an artist. I want you to have this. The old man unwrapped the packaged, pulling the paper away to reveal a portrait of his son. The canvass featured a young mans face in striking detail, though the world would never consider the painting the work of a genius. Overcoming with emotion, the man thanked the soldier. Once the soldier had departed, the old man set about hanging the portrait above the fireplace, pushing aside the painting by masters that had cost thousands of dollars. Then seating himself in his chair, he spend Christmas gazing at the gift he had been given. In the weeks that followed, the man grew peaceful realizing that Mark lived on because of those he touched. The soldiers gift soon became his most prize painting, its worth to him far eclipsing the value of the pieces in his collection for which museums around the world clamored. He told his neighbors it was the greatest gift he had ever received. The following spring, the old man became ill and passed away. The art world stirred in anticipation of the public auction of the old mans estate. He had stipulated that his collection be sold on Christmas day - the day he had received his greatest gift. On the appointed day, the art collectors from around the world gather to bid on the spectacular paintings. Many who coveted the reputation of owning the greatest art collection waited eagerly for the auctioneer to open the bidding. The auction began with a painting not on any museums must have listthe soldiers painting of the old mans son. May I have an opening bid? the auctioneer requested. The room was silent, Who will open the bidding with $100? he prompted. Minutes passed and still n one spoke. Who cares about the painting? shouted a bidder from the back of the room. Its just a picture of his son. Commented another. More voices echoed agreement. Lets forget it and go on to the good stuff. No. we have to sell this one first, replied the auctioneer. Now, who will take his son? Finally, a friend of the old man spoke. Id like to have the painting. I knew the boy. Will you take ten dollars for it? Thats all I have. More silence. Going Once. The auctioneer raised the gavel. Going twice, he said looking around for any takers. Gone, he said at last, letting the gavel fall. Cheers filled the room. Now we can get on with the bidding on these treasures! remarked the man from the back of the room. Over the microphone, the auctioneer said, Thank you for coming. The auction is now over Stunned with disbelief quieted the room. What do you mean its over? growled an irate bidder. We didnt come here for a picture of some old guys son! shouted the irate bidder coming to his feet. There are million of dollars of art here! I demand that you explain whats going on! Its very simple, replied the auctioneer. According to the will of the father, whoever takes the songets it all.

THE ART OF AUCTION The widowed elder man looked on with satisfaction on as Mark, his only child became an experience art collector. The sons trained eye and sharp business mind caused his father to beam with pride as they dealt with art collector around the world. As winter approached war engulfed their nation, and Mark left to serve his country. After only a few short weeks, his father received a telegram; his beloved son died saving the life of a fellow soldier. Distraught and lonely, the old men faced the upcoming Christmas holidays with anguish and sadness. The joy of the season, season that he and his son always looked forward to, would visit house no longer. On Christmas morning, a knock on the door awakened the ld man. As we walked to the door, the masterpiece of art on the walls only reminded him that his son was not coming home. At the door, was a soldier with a large package.

How many gates does Jesus say there are? " APPLICATION: And that is the will of the Father today. Whoever takes the Son gets it all. When you take Christ the Savior, you will have the riches of life to its fullest (John 10:10, Matthew 6:33). Jesus is Gods greatest treasure his pearl of great price (Matthew 13:4546) LESSON II A CHOICE OF TWO COURSE OBJECTIVE: to determine the two choices man can make with his eternal destiny. OUTLINE: A. Introduction How does Jesus describe these gates? VISUALIZE TWO GATES: WIDE Broad Many find Easy TWO DESTINATIONS: Leads to destruction Leads to hell Leads to life Leads to heaven NAROW Small Few finds Hard

- People are confused with lots of choices. (See Illustration The Power of Choice) B. Body

IT IS NOT A MULTIPLE CHOICE; BUT A CHOICE OF TWO,

ONE WAY IS THE RIGHT -THE OTHER IS WRONG Which one would you choose? 1. Two Destinations (Matt. 7:13-14) a. Its not a multiple choice but a choice of two b. Ignorance is no excuse! 2. Deception of Satan a. There is no hell (Heb. 9:27) b. Your sins are only small sins (James 2:10-11, Rev. 21:8) c. Other ways to get to heaven (Rev. 20:10; Luke 18:10-14) C. Conclusion Most of us would choose the narrow way since it is clearly the correct choice, because it leads to life IF THE CHOICE IS SO OBVIOUS, -Why do you think Jesus said many will choose the wide gate? -According to Jests how many will find the narrow gate? Why? - Well, Jesus' warning in VI 5 gives a clue. THAT'S RIGHT!!! MANY WILL BE MISLEAD BY FALSE PROPHETS. *Many will choose the wide gate simply because they do not know that it leads to hell! IGNORANCE IS NO EXCUSE!!! Lets trim to 2Cor. 11:13" Why is it that many are mislead according to this verse? *False Apostle abounds and they deceive people; *No wonder... lets read the next verse. (Verses 14-15) What disguise does Satan use? If Satan shows his true color, no one will eater the wide gate. Today many people are confused in the avalanche of many religions all claiming they are leading to the truth. How many religions do we have in the world today? (A Christian authors research showed that there are about 28,000) With so many religions, some are saying that it does not really matter which one you. Join, they all lead to the same mountain. Jesus, the great teacher that has simplified everything. Boiled everything to a choice of two. Tonight, .we will take a look at these two choices. Let us turn to Matthew 7:13-14. *When Satan counterfeits it wilt be so close to the real thing so that many can deny the real truth, DO NOT LET HIM FOOL YOU.What is the objective of Satan? (2Cor. 11: 3)

- There is only one way to get to heaven, and that is thru Jesus Christ. See Illustration (The Squalas) INTRODUCTION:

4|Page

How does Satan accomplish his objective according to V 4? What are the some off the things that Satan could tell people that deceive them that the wide toad leads t6 heaven instead of hell? HERE are several things that Satan could possibly say: A. There is no hell!!! We will simply reincarnate! Hebrew^ 9:27-- gives us perspective B Your sins are only small sins. How can a loving God send you to hell for those small sins? James 2: 10

What were they doing? Praying in the church How did they view themselves? Superbait sinner What good Pharisee: deed Fast did 2x they a do? week

Publican: none Pharisee: Tithes 10% Dependent on what to get to heaven Self performance Publican: Gods mercy According to Jesus, who entered the gate to heaven? So what is the first step to entering the narrow gate? ONE MUST HUMBLE HIMSELF AND TRUST OIN GOD RATHER THAN SELF

ow does God look at a person who has committed one sin? God's view is very different from man's Is God unfair? NO, NO, NO, let's look at the next verse. James 2:11- What is God's explanation? Who said do not commit adultery? Who said do not murder? Who said do not lie? *RIGHT! 1! It is the same God, who said all. So it does not matter which one you break, you are going against God. Lets turn to Rev.21:8- Where will all sinners go? - What does God call this? The second... - What can you say about these sins as far as their penalty is concerned? Satan would like us to believe otherwise. JESUS SAID THAT THERE ARE TWO GATES- ONE LEADS TO HELL THE LAKE OFFIRE ...HELL IS A REALITY- NOT AN INVENTIONS OF MAN'S IMAGINATION. REV .20:10- shows us what will happen there C. Another way in which Satan tries to deceive men is to misled them on how to get to heaven. TO UNDERSTAND BETTER GOD'S WAY TO HEAVEN, LET US LOOK AT TWO MEN. Turn your Bible on Luke 18:10-14 VISUALIZE Two men: Who were these two men? Pharisee (Priest) Where did they go? They both go to church Publican (BIR)

VISUALIZE: FORMULA 1. FAITH IN JESUS + GOOD WORKS = SALVATION FORMULA 2. FAITH IN JESUS + 0 = SALVATION = GOOD WORKS

Many people will be fooled into thinking that formula 1 is the way but they will be surprised! Let's turn back to Matt. 7:21-23 Did these people expect to enter heaven? As described are these people "pagans" . Did they believe Jesus is Lord? Why are they refused entry into heaven? Like the Pharisee, how were they seeking, to gain entry? HOW CAN WE BE SURE THAT WE KNOW JESUS vs 24-27 What is the difference between the Wise and the foolish man? The wise man hears the word of Jesus and act upon it... The FOOL hears some words but does not act upon it. This is the kind of "faith" ... the one that acts ... that will allow us to enter the narrow gate. This is the kind of faith that saves. Real faith always results in doing God's Will. IS THERE ANYTHING TONIGHT THAT IS PREVENTING YOU FROM ENTERING THE NARROW GATE TO LIFE? IS THERE A SIN IN YOUR LIFE THAT YOU NEED TO TURN AWAY FROM? TO GIVE UP? .

WHY NOT FOLLOW CHRIST? HE IS OFFERING YOU ETERNAL LIFE? John 3:16 CLOSE IN PRAYER

until we experience the grace of God. Gal. 1:4 What can we learn about this? TWO THINGS HE HAS DONE

ILLUSTRATIONS: THE POWER OF CHOICE When God created man, HE made superior to all other creatures. He gave man the power and privilege of choice. Up to now, the Lord respects that privilege. He will not force with that privilege of choice, goes the responsibility of abiding by the results or consequences of our choice. When we have to make a choice and dont make it that is in itself a choice. Now Jesus the great Master teacher honor these privilege of choice and give these two choices SQUALAS The submarine Squalas and its crew lay helpless at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean, two hundred and forty feet below the surface. The crew sent up smoke flares, hoping that their location would become known, the submarine Sculpin did not locate the. A ten-top diving beel was lowered several times. Bringing to safety the thirty-three surviving members of the crew of the ill-fated Squalas. Not one of the thirty-three men said to their rescuers, I will think it over. Or I will wait for more convenient season, or I am in good condition as I am, or There is too much to give up, or I dont understand it until tomorrow. All instantly and gratefully accepted the means of escape from death. LESSON III THE ONLY WAY OBJECTIVE: To clarify that there is ONE WAY to heaven based on God's revelation --- JESUS CHRIST IS THE ONLY WAY.

HOW DO YOU THINK WE GET TO HEAVEN?

By doing good. By following the Ten Commandments By avoiding "big sins" By performing religious obligations SINCE THERE ARE SO MANY THEORIES AND OUR LIFE IS AT STAKE, LET US CHECK WHAT GOD HAS TO SAY ABOUT THIS ISSUE. Gal. 1:1- Who is the author? Who sent him? Whom is he representing? What is the credential of Paul? Gal. 1:2- This letter is addressed to whom? Are they believers or unbelievers? Gal. 1:3 - Standard greetings. Grace and peace. We cannot have peace

Titus 3:5 How are we saved? Not on the basis of deeds we have done in righteousness. CONCLUSION: CANNOT ADD GOOD WORKS TO SALVATION. GOOD WORKS RESULT FROM BEING SAVED (EPH.2:10) B. Obeying the Ten Commandments James 2:10-11- What is God's standard? If you break one, you break all. How do you describe God's standard? Hard? Difficult? Impossible? Why then did God give us the Ten Commandments? Romans 3:20 -Through the commandments comes the knowledge of sin. The commandment act likes a mirror. It shows us that we are sinners. 3 .CLAIM HIS PROMISE THAT IF YOU OPEN THE DOOR OF YOUR HEART, HE WILL COME IN. REVIEW KEY POINTS MAN'S PROBLEM Rom.3:23 - What is the problem of all men? Rom.6-.23 - What is the penalty of sin? Who will experience this death? Rev.21:8- What do we need to do? Rom. 1:16 -How do we experience this belief? John 5:11-42 v. 11 - What has God given us? Where can we find this life? v.l2 - If you have the Son what else do you have? If you do not have the Son, what do you have? THE PRAYER HAS THREE POINTS: 1. ADMIT THAT YOU ARE A SINNER AND EXPRESS DESIRE TO REPENT. 2. BEL1EVE THAT THE DEATH / RESURRECTION OF JESUS CHRIST SUFFICIENT TO BRING US TO HEAVEN THOUGH WE'RE NOT WORTHY.

7|Page

FOR THOSE WHO WOULD LIKE TO EXPRESS THEIR BELIEF IN THIS PROMISE OF JESUS, YOU CAN SAY A SIMPLE PRAYER. PRAYER: LORD JESUS, I ADMIT THAT I AM A SINNER. I KNOW THAT I CANNOT SAVE- MYSELF THRU MY OWN EFFORTS. I TRUST IN YOU 100% TO SAVE ME FROM HELL BECAUSE YOU DIED FOR ALL -MY SINS EVEN THOUGH I AM NOT WORTHY. I BELIEVE YOU ROSE AGAIN FROM: THE DEAD. I HAVE OPENED THE DOOR OF MY HEART, LET YOUR SPIRIT COME INTO ME. AND TAKE CONTROL OF MY HEART. THANK YOU FOR COMING INTO MY LIFE. MAKE ME, THE KIND OF PERSON YOU WANT ME TO BE. AMEN. WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU DO NOT BELIEVE THIS GOSPEL? 2THESS 1:7-8 I PETER 4:17-18 TEACHER'S NOTE: Emphasize that prayer itself is not a magic, saying it does not save anyone. Explain parts of prayer before asking them to pray. Go slowly so they can follow. ILLUSTRATION: THE BATTLESHIP AND THE LIGHTHOUSE The darkest part of the night, a ships captain cautiously piloted his warship through the fig-shrouded waters. With straining eyes h scanned the hazy darkness, searching for dangers lurking jut our of sight. His worst fears were realized when he saw a bright light straight ahead. It appeared to be a vessel on a collision course with his ship. To avert disaster he quickly radioed the oncoming vessel. This is Captain Jeremiah Smith, Captain Smith. This is Private Thomas Johnson, Please alter your course ten degrees north! Over. Appalled at the audacity of the message, the captain shouted back over the radio. Private Johnson, this is Captain Smith, and I order you to immediately alter your course ten degrees south Over A second time the oncoming light did not budge. With all due respect Captain Smith, came the privates voice again, I order you to alter your course ten degrees north! Over. Angered and frustrated that this impudent sailor would endanger the lives of his men and crew, the captain growled back over the radio, Private Johnson, I can have you court-mailed for this! For the last time, I command you on the authority of the United States government to alter your course ten degrees to the south! I am a battleship! The privates final transmission was chilling, Captain Smith, sir. Once again with all due respect, I command you to alter your course ten degrees to the north! I am a lighthouse! APPLICATION; Many of us todays world have little respect for authority. We operate as if rules can be (or should be) changed to fit our personal needs and desires. Commercials egg on us: Have it your way. In reality, we cant always have it our way. We have to conform our lives to a higher truth, a higher authority the Word of God.

Gods truth is like a lighthouse. Its not going to change to accommodate us. We are the ones who must change to conform our lives to what God wants for us. Jesus is also like a lighthouse. The Bible teaches that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever (Heb. 13:8). He will always be there for us. He is absolutely dependable. We Christians must conform our lives to His will for us. If He tells us to alter our courses, we have no choice. THE SMARTEST TEENAGER IN THE WORLD One fine day four people were flying in a small, four-passenger plane: a pilot, a minister, and two teenagers, one whom had just won an award for being the Smartest Teenager in the World. As they were flying along, the pilot turned to the three passengers and said, Ive got some bad news, and Ive got some worse news. The bad news is, were out of gas. The planes going down and were gonna crash. The worse news is, I only have three parachutes on board. This meant, of course that someone would have to go down with the plane. The pilot continued, I have a wife and three children at home. I have many responsibilities. Im sorry, but Im going to have to take one of the parachutes, With that, he grabbed one of the parachutes and jumped out of the plane. The Smartest Teenager in The World was next to speaking. I am the Smartest Teenager in the World. he said. I might be the one who comes up with a cure for cancer or AIDS or solves the worlds economic problems. Everyone is counting on me! The Smartest Teenager in the World grabbed the second parachute and jumped. The minister then spoke up and said, Son, you take the last parachute, Ive made my peace with God, and Im willing to go down with the plane. Now take the last parachute and go. Relax, reverend, said the other teenager. The Smartest Teenager in the World just jumped out of the plane with my knapsack. APPLICATION: A lot of kids think theyre pretty smart. In reality, theyre a lot of like The Smartest Teenager in the World. They jump out into the world without parachutes. They think they know it all and have all they need to live to live happy and fulfilled lives, to keep them from crashing and burning. What they actually have is a knapsack. The only parachute that will ultimately save is the Gospel of Christ. All other ways are false and lead to death. Jesus said, I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me (John 14:6). A lot of smart kids havent learned how to make wise decisions. They act impulsively, without thinking. The result is sometimes the same as what happened to the Smartest Teenager in the World- death. ESKIMO WOLF HUNTERS According to tradition, this is how an Eskimo hunter kills a wolf. First, the Eskimo coats his knife blade with animal blood and allows it to freeze. He then adds layer after layer of blood until the blade is completely

8|Page

concealed by the frozen blood. Next, the hunter fixes his knife in the ground with the blade up. When a wolf follows his sensitive nose to the source of the scent and discovers the bait, he licks it, tasting the fresh blood. He begins to lick faster, more and more vigorously, lapping the blade until the keen edge is bare. Feverishly now, harder and harder, the wolf licks the blade in the cold Artic night. His craving for blood becomes so great the wolf does not notice the razor-sharp sting of the naked blade on his own tongue. Nor does he recognize the instant when his insatiable thirst is being satisfied by his own warm blood. His carnivorous appetite continues to crave more until in the morning light, the wolf is found dead on the snow! APPLICATION Many kids begin using drugs, drinking alcohol, smoking cigarettes, or engaging in unsafe sexual behavior for the same reasons that the wolf begins licking the knife blade. It seems safe and delicious at first, but it doesnt satisfy. More and more is desired, leading to a crisis or death. Dont be fooled by the temptations of sins. Like the wolf, we can get away with it or for a while. Eventually, however, its true character is revealed. Sin leads to death and destruction. For the wages of sin is death. (Rom. 6:23)

Let's discover together in John 3 V. 1- What kind of person is Nicodemus? Pharisees were: Religious rulers, very powerful, could excommunicate, had memorized the first 5 books of the Bible.

Since some of you may not be familiar with what Pharisee is. Lets quickly turn to Luke 18:10-13 for some background. How would you describe the Pharisee? Hyper-legalist, emphasized external rituals, believed salvation was by works, following laws and viewed themselves as self-righteous. V.2 How did Nicodemus regard Jesus? Like most of us, he believed Jesus was from God. -He seemed to be -seeking answers to questions deep inside -We would have expected Jesus to welcome Nicodemus warmly but he did not. YET ONE THING GOOD ABOUT NICODEMUS WAS HIS OPENNNESS HE WAS NOT CLOSED/ HE CAME EVEN BY NIGHT. I HOPE THAT ALL OF YOU WILL COME WITH AN OPEN MIND.

LESSON IV WHAT BORN AGAIN REALLY MEANS OUTLINE: A. Introduction - Not everyone who calls himself a Christian is really one (See Illustration Bad Math, Good Play) B. Body 1. What Jesus says of being a Christian (John 3; Luke 18:10-13) a. Necessity of regeneration b. Futility of religion or position (Jn. 4:2; Ez 36:25-27; Titus 3:4-5) c. Unity of the revelation (2 Tim. 3:14-15; Isa. 1:16-17) d. Unbelief (Numbers 21:4-9) 2. Jesus explanation of Born again (Jm. 2:10; Eph. 2:8-9; Luke 18; John 3:19-21; John 3:36) C. Conclusion -Born again means being spiritually purified and spiritually reborn. PRAYER INTRODUCTION: Not everyone who calls himself a Christian is really one. People can deceive themselves into thinking they are because they have been: A) Baptized b) said a prayer WHAT DID JESUS HAVE TO SAY ABOUT BEING A CHRISTIAN?

V3. What is Jesus' answer to Nicodemus unsaid question? MANY CONSIDER BEING BORN AGAIN A 201" CENTURY FAD, BUT JESUS SAID IT ALMOST 2000 YEARS AGO. IT IS NOT A NEW THING. Is being born again an option or an absolute condition? If we are not born again, can we enter heaven? THE FIRST PRINCIPLE THAT WE CAN LEARN IS THE NECESSITY OF REGENERATION. IT IS NOT OPTIONAL.

SINCE IT IS AN ABSOLUTE. IT IS CRITICAL THAT WE UNDERSTAND WHAT IT MEANS. V4 - What did Nicodemus understand the words of Jesus to Look at the question of Nicodemus? Can a man cause himself to be born again? He did not know? Nicodemus was not a dumb person to believe Jesus meant a literal rebirth. He was a learned teacher. Symbolism was a common way for rabbis to teach truth. THE SECOND PRINCIPE WE CAN LEARN FROM JESUS IS THE FUTILITY OF RELIGION OT POSITION Jesus did not praise him for being a Pharisee (priest) That fact that he belonged to a Jewish race (the chosen people) did not matter either.

9|Page

Jesus did not ask him to perform any ritual. If Jesus asked him to go to church, what would his question be? Where to pray? What to pray? All this he could do!!! Jesus was not demanding some superficial, easy to do formula or prayer, Jesus called for nothing short of a complete overhaul, a regeneration. This is something man cannot do his own. He cannot earn it either. Nicodemus was really asking, How can I start over? I have been in my religion for too long? Tumanda na ako dito, I cannot go back and re learn again.! V5- What does Jesus demand in verse 5? What does it mean to be born of water and spirit? Some people say it is baptism but unlikely that it is baptism of water. John 4:2, Jesus never baptized anyone. If salvation required baptism of water, then Jesus would be baptizing people, Jesus most likely using water as a symbol.

What was Paul encouraging Timothy to do? What scripture did Timothy have them? (Old) Since when? What does this imply? SALVATION in the Old Testament is also by faith not religion or by good works. Even in the Old Testament, salvation, was not pay-off for those who observed the law, but a gift to those who humbly and by faith sought redemption from their sin. Yet it has always meant a new start, a turning from sin to God. Aside from the passage in Ezekiel, lets turn to another Old Testament passage to show you the unity of the Bible. Read Isaiah 1:16 Do you see the imagery of the water? Purification from sin. This cleansing leads then to good works. Lets turn back to verse 51-12 What was the sin of Nicodemus that be may not be aware of? THE SIN OF UNBELIEF!

In Old Testament, water was used as a symbol for cleansing Ezekiel 36:25-27, water is used by God to do what? Symbol of purification, the promise of God. This is the Old Testament version of what it means to be born again. It is Spiritual cleansing spiritual regeneration. In the New Testament, Titus 3:4-5, thoughts of washing/renewing are again found. WHAT JESUS WAS IN EFFECT SAYING WAS THAT NICODEMUS NEEDED TO BE SPIRITLIALLLY PURIFIED AND SPIRITUALLY REBORN/THIS INTERPRETATION IS VERIFIED BY JESUS IN VERSE 6. V6 - What two births are contrasted? We have already been born ONCE from our physical parents. We need to be born of Spirit to be born again Where does Spiritual birth come from? V7 - Jesus repeats the absolute condition. Did he consider it crucial? The whole point is: We need to be spiritually Purified/reborn V9 -- How did Nicodemus react? V10 - What did Jesus imply in verse 10? Nicodemus SHOULD HAVE KNOWN since he taught Scriptures. The gospel in Old Testament and New Testament is the same. THE THIRD PRINCIPLE IS THE UNITY OF THE REVELATION The Old Testament plainly taught the way to salvation. 2 Tim.3:14-15 THE FOURTH. PRINCIPLE: UNBELIEF LOCKS THE DOOR OF SALVATION!!! -He refused to accept what Jesus said. -Like most people, they do not believe what Jesus says. -It is a question of belief. V.13 - What was Jesus' credential? - He has been to heaven; therefore, we must trust Him with regards to heavenly matters. V.14. Jesus graciously explains the new birth to Nicodemus, Again Jesus uses the Old Testament. What is the comparison that, Jesus makes? We cannot understand because we do not know the Old Testament, Nicodemus understood because he knew Old Testament Read Numbers 21:4-9 Draw comparison table on board. Fill up Moses side first. JESUS EXPLANATION OF BORN AGAIN MOSES LIFTED UP SERPENT JESUS LIFTED ON THE CROSS PROBLEM? Snakes poison in them Spiritual Poison? SIN

Lived physically (v9) Eternal life (v15-16) Do you still see the serpent on the pole today? Where? SYMBOL OF MEDECINE John 3:16- How did Jesus summarize what born again means? What does belief include? Not just head knowledge but obedience to Gods word. A decision to forsake past life and move into the light. John 3:19-21- Why did men refuse to come to the light? John 3:36- Unbelief is equated with what?

look half as pitiful as the battered despairing faces of the State players. As a gesture of goodwill the Oklahoma State coach put in all the seniors for the last play of the game and told Randy to call whatever play he wanted- The team huddled, and to the surprise of his teammates, Randy called play 13 - a trick play they'd never used, for the good reason that it had never worked in practice. Well, we were the huddle," Randy answered^ "and I looked over and saw old Harry with tears running down his cheeks. It was his last college game and we were losing. And saw that bug 8 on his chest. 'Then I looked over and saw Ralph. And tears were running down his cheeks, too. And I saw that big 7 on his jersey. So in honor of those two heartbroken seniors, I added eight and seven together and called play 13! "But Randy;" the coach shouted back, "Eight and seven don't add up to 13! Randy reflected! For a moment and answered back with a smirk, "You're right couch! And if Id been as smart as you are, we would have lost the game!

APPLICATION: Sometimes the correct answers are not always the right answers. Certainly, when it comes to matters of faith, reason more often than not has to take a backseat. Not that you have to turn your brain off. Its just that the Christian faith rarely makes sense to people unfamiliar with the often upside-down world of Christianity It was on the cross, of all places, that Jesus actually won the game, to speak. The Bible says that kind of salvation is foolishness to those who dont believe. (1 Cor. 1:23--25). Wise people know that even though the gospel doesnt add up, the truth of it sets us fire. CLOSE IN PRAYER ILLUSTRATION: BEAUTY AND THE BEAST Do you remember the gripping scene in the animated Disney film Beauty and the Beast when the Beast was about to confess his love to Belle? Cogsworth looked on with euphoric anticipation, for if Belle pledged her love to the Beast, presto! The spell that hung over the castle like a dark dank cloud of doom would finally be broken. As the clasped hands with the Beast, Belle asked permission to gaze into the magical mirror in order to see her father. Viewing her father in obvious distress, she dropped the mirror and grasped at his plight. Ive got to go to him, she sobbed. Go to him, then, The Beast responded. Thos four words spoke volumes. Cogsworth later walked into the room with an air of triumphant expectancy as he declared to the Beast, I must say these things are going swimmingly. All hope vanished into thin air, however, when the Beast uttered the most significant line in the film. I let her go, he confessed to his enchanted little clock. As the reality of those words sunk in, Cogsworth shook himself and asked, You did what?

-Salvation is a gift. (See Illustration Him! Him! Him!) PRAYER INTRODUCTION:

TEXT: ACTS10:1-47 Can you imagine the impact of the Beasts admission? To let her go was to plunge his kingdom into another season of a cursed existence. TO let her go meant that all hope was lost of ever becoming normally human again. To let her go meant that he forfeited his last, best chance of ever being loved. But he let her go. Why? I had to, he said. I loved her. The Beast understood that a lover does not hold the object of his love hostage to his possessive grasp. Perhaps some would not believe there was hell, but you could only think about it. Nothing will happen if you dont believe or if you believe! But wait till you get there. A. Dr. S.D. Gordon tells of old Christian woman whose age began to tell on her memory. She had once known much of the Bible by heart. Eventually only one precious bit stayed with her. I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that He is able to keep that which I committed unto Him against that day. By and by part of that slipped its hold, and she would quietly repeat, That which I have committed unto Him. At last, as she hovered on the borderline between this and the spirit world, her love ones noticed her lips moving. They bent down to see if she needed anything. She was repeating over and over again to herself the one word of the test, Him, Him, Him. She had lost the whole Bible, but one word. But she had the whole Bible in that one word.
