First Aid

Chest thrust

One hand is balled into a fist in the center of the chest between the nipples, the other hand is placed on the fist, and then quick inward and upward thrusts are made

Defibrillator Head-tilt chin-lift

The restoration of normal heart rhythm A technique used to clear the airway. One hand on the clients forehead to tilt the head back and places the fingers of the other hand under the bony part of the chin, lifting the mandible upward and outward

Ventricular fibrillation

An abnormal heart rhythm, the most common cause of cardiac arrest. When this occurs, the hearts rhythm becomes chaotic and the heart does not pump blood. A type of shock that occurs quickly, even in minutes, with severe life-threatening consequences A condition that occurs when the heart muscle is deprived of its supply of oxygen-rich blood and nutrients Painful spasms of the back of the leg muscles or abdomen muscles A condition caused by prolonged exposure to excessive heat, (the body looses fluids, high temperatures, and a lack of physical conditioning)

A serious condition that occurs when the bodys inner temperature rises so fast that the body cannot cool itself A condition caused by an increase in blood sugar level in a diabetic client, it is characterized by symptoms such as extreme thirst, excessive hunger, blurred vision, heavy breathing, and unconsciousness The condition of having an abnormally low body temperature, typically one that is dangerously low. A condition that occurs when too little oxygen and nutrients reach the bodys cells, tissues, and organs A condition caused by the blocking of an artery that supplies blood or when a blood vessel in the brain ruptures and bleeds into the brain
