Kids get into Saturday cricket Plans for mens

Around 15 young Blackall students got active last Saturday for the first week of the Milo Have-A-Go In2CRICKET program being run at St Josephs Primary School. The MILO in2CRICKET Program is Cricket Australias official entry-level program, designed to introduce 5-10 year old children to the game of cricket in a fun and safe environment, with the HaveA-Go segment specifically targeted at students kindergarten to Year Three Nev Paulsen from Cricket QLD was on hand on Saturday to kick off the program and said it was great to see the levels of enthusiasm amongst the students. Once they get registered with the program, students get a backpack with a bat, a shirt, a hat, a ball and some other goodies, Mr Paulsen said. Principal Tim Franzmann said he was grateful to parents for assisting during the first session, and hoped more people would volunteer to help out with the program. This program doesnt work if we dont have helpers, Mr Franzmann said. Older students Will Parry and Jack Banks also volunteered to help with the program, receiving one on one cricket training with Mr Paulsen in return. The program will be held at St Josephs on Saturday mornings from 9am. There is also the possibility of starting the Have-A-Game portion of the program for older primary students with Saturday games of T20 Blast cricket.

Summer could be set to get sporty, with plans in the works for Blackalls own cricket team. The team would be open to men aged 14 and up, with plans to play a semi series of Twenty20 or 40 overs cricket against a Barcaldine team. Twenty20 games run for a single innings, with a maximum of 20 overs, resulting in a shortened format of the game, designed to be more attractive for spectators. Games would be played every few weeks over summer. Anyone interested in getting involved is asked to contact Tim Franzmann or Matt McLean.

Slayde Peacock took to the bat at the cricket program on Saturday.

Young Blackall athlete Jack Banks travelled to Longreach in September to compete over four days at the State Touch football championships as part of the North West team.

Blackall grazier named wool producer of the year

Blackall grazier Jack Banks has been named Wool Producer of the Year at last weeks Australian Farmer of the Year awards held in Sydney. The Kondinin Group in partnership with ABC Rural searched the country for farmers who demonstrate innovation, sustainability, professionalism and leadership. Jack said he was pleasantly surprised to win the award, after travelling to the ceremony with his wife Rhonda. Its something thats taken us a bit by surprise, Jack said. We thought wed done well to be one of three finalists. Were very pleased that were representing our area and our state. Jack has lived in the Blackall area his whole life and his property Springleigh has been family owned and operated for several generations. Jack said he believes there isnt just one step to producing good wool. Youve got do all the little things right during the year to produce a good product come shearing time, Jack said Jack said one of the biggest challenges he faced was controlling wild dogs. Were very lucky here; weve got a pretty good coordinated baiting program which works most of the time, Jack said. Springleigh also benefits from wild dog satellite tracking being conducted by Lee Allen, a senior zoologist with Biosecurity Queensland and a team of scientists, with Jack using the information collected by them to inform his operation. Jack said he was pleased with the current state of the wool prices after a few years of having a struggling wool market. The wool market has been lagging behind but its been good since Christmas, Jack said. Were certainly proud of our industry as its on a high at the moment, but weve got to be able to make it sustainable.

From thePathways young people getting involved in Editor The team from Creative
were in town this week once again, and it was a priviledge to be able to see some of the young talent our town has to offer. It was absolutely fantastic to see

creative pursuits and taking the opportunity to hone their skills at the workshops throughout the week. However, theres always room for

improvement and I would love to see even more people get involved. Trying out new things is a great way to spice up your life, and who knows you may just discover a talent you never knew you had.

Winter is with us again after a brief Indian summer. The profusion of blooms on bougainvillea, wisteria and delicate bauhinia trees certainly make for sights and thoughts of spring. I had a busy week in Brisbane attending meetings with the Minister for Health and the Chief Medical Officer for Queensland. The purpose of the meeting was the formal request for exemption from having fluoride administered into the water supply in Blackall. This request will be taken to the panel chaired by the Chief Medical Officer before going to the minister with a recommendation from the panel. I felt I was given a good hearing and will write in support of initiatives which the Blackall Tambo Regional Council would take in lieu of a fluoridated water supply. Should the minister decree we must continue with this very expensive scheme to both the Queensland Government and the Blackall Tambo Regional Council we will have a further 12 months from the date of the ministers letter to comply. I then met with the CEO of the Queensland Reconstruction Authority Graeme Newton in regard to our submission for flood works on the heavily damaged roads in our region. There have been many hoops to go through, however I feel we are nearing the completion of all the impediments which have arisen. There are both state and federal authorities to satisfy in this application for funding. With the state of budgets in both levels of government, they are definitely looking at all expenditure and value for money. I was pleased to be present at a meeting of the Remote Area Development Board withchairman Cr Ed Warren, Mayor of Winton Shire and general manager David Arnold, the opposition leader Campbell Newman and Andrew Powell. The assertion by the opposition leader that he was for the people of the bush and local government was received well.

FROM THE MAYORS DESK

However with all the shadow ministers coming from the coastal regions and the south east corner it did beg a question of equity of representation and the express disappointment of residents of the West in having no one to speak on their behalf. While in Brisbane I was able to attend a meeting of the Galilee Basin Operators Forum. This is a group of coal seam gas miners who have commenced exploration in the central west. I was surprised to learn it will take from five to seven years to actually prove a well or series of wells to go on to actually extracting the gas. Thus far they are exploring in the Rodney Creek and Aramac areas. The Regional Development Australia announcement of successful projects certainly was not a surprise not a cent for west of the Great Divide! Congratulations to CEO Ken Timms on being awarded Manager of the Year by his peers and members of the Local Government Managers Association. The award was presented at the LGMA Conference held at Yeppoon. The prestigious award is well deserved as Ken has proved his dedication to both the council and community in which he serves. His commitment to all staff and his attention to detail necessary for good governance and a compliant and transparent organisation were all recognised. On my way home Friday evening, I was delighted to attend a dance recital in Tambo Alice Through Time with a combined Tambo and Blackall cast of 40 dancers. The concert retold the time honoured story of Alice and her adventures certainly charmed the audience who enjoyed the recital. Congratulations to Birrali Schefe, Fia Hobbs, Pam Pullus and Edrine Keegan. Funding from the Blackall Tambo RADF, PCAP and the Blackall Tambo Regional Council contributed to the success of the event.

Blackall to bustle with reunion celebrations

Blackall will come alive this weekend, with 250 visitors confirmed for the Back to Blackall weekend and many more expected. Organisers are hoping for a turn out of 500 people at each event over the weekend. The celebration will kick off with a Meet and Greet being held at the showgrounds on Friday night starting at 6pm with music by Lex and Len, and food and drinks available. On Saturday morning, Shamrock Street from Clematis Street to Violet Street will be closed from 8am-1pm for a host of festivities. Attractions on the day will include historical displays throughout the town, markets, face painting, a jumping castle and the best decorated bike competition. A shearing demonstration will take place at 10am, while the Remember When fashion parade featuring outfits from different eras will be held at 10:30am. School roll calls will be held for the Blackall State School at 9am and the St Josephs Primary School at 12:30pm. Visitors will also be well fed with a sidewalk caf, delicious donuts and a sausage sizzle on offer. The festivities will continue that evening at the Blackall Cultural Centre from 7pm with dinner, dancing and music provided by Lex and Len. Admission to the event will cost $10. Sunday will see the day start with breakfast at the Blackall Bowls Club at 8am, followed by a fun day of bowls with a barbecue lunch fundraiser held by the Blackall State School. The weekend will conclude with a Sunday night camp oven dinner and sing-along at the caravan park, with an alternate option of a meal and music by Lex and Len at the Prince of Wales Hotel. A courtesy bus will be available for pick up to and from functions on Friday and Saturday nights, as well as on Sunday.

The Tambo police station has joined the list of centres issuing Queenslands new style of drivers licences, identification cards and authority cards. The new, more durable cards will replace the current laminate licences. The transition to the new cards started last year, with the change gradually being rolled out across the state. Queensland driver licences are issued for a period of up to five years, with it set to take approximately five to six years for all cardholders to replace their laminated licences or authorities with the new cards. During that time, both laminated cards and the new cards will be recognised. The new cards are also available at Longreach, with Barcaldine set to make the switch within the next month.

Barcaldine band to rock Blackall

Shamrock Street has been hung with colourful bunting in preparation for the Back to Blackall reunion this weekend.

The Blackall Hospital Auxiliary Springtime Festival is fast approaching, with Barcaldine band The Ballistics lined up to provide live music throughout the evening. Grassland Art Gallery will present an exhibition by western artists Lesley Cowper and Margaret Stevensen, which will open with a lunch time event on Sunday September 25. The exhibition is entitled Ode to a Tree and is loosely based on the poem Trees by Joyce Kilmar, a copy of which has sat on Margarets bookcase for a long time. Trees has provided the link between the two artists for inspiration for this exhibition, and the two have created an interesting show using several different mediums and varying interpretations. Separated by many kilometres, the two women have collaborated to generate an exhibition full of colour, form and texture. Lesley says a love of colour and design in my work as a textile artist shows in my paintings as a simplification of form and pattern in the landscape, and she has created works using

acrylic and lino prints as well as two very unique fabric works which involve roller printed leaves of Eucalyptus illyarrie on linen/ cotton and a lino print on muslin cloth. Margaret works primarily in watercolour and says her favourite subjects are right at my front door and in my backyard red sandhills, glorious ghost gums, large blue skies that go on forever, weathered timber, rusty chains, theyre all beckoning. Using this inspiration she has built some weighty assemblages utilising found objects to exhibit at Grasslands. The exhibition will be on display until November 3 and promises to inspire and invite plenty of interest. For further information please contact Alison Shaw 0428546107 or cfo@btrc.qld.gov.au

Local meat was on the menu on Sunday night, when the Barcoo Hotel showcased producer Ashley Adams Tendabeef range with a roast carvery meal. Ashley said he appreciated the opportunity to showcase his meat to the local population. Its great to be able to promote local products in the local region, Ashley said. Ashley uses GeneStar tenderness marker testing to create naturally tender, hormone free beef at his Blackall property, Darracourt. He then uses the GeneStar test outcomes to selectively breed Santa Gertrudis and Simmental cattle, which are then finished at a family owned feedlot on the Darling Downs and packaged by an Oakey butcher. Ashley also uses IVF technology to help breed the cattle required for the Tendabeef brand. Theres such a limited number of this quality of cattle that we have to use the technology to further the breed, Ashley said. Its designed right from the word go to be of eating quality. Over 50 meals were served on the night, with the meat running out by around 7pm and positive feedback from diners on the quality of the meal. Publican Jeff Pohlner said Ashley had approached him a while back about the possibility of serving Tendabeef and that he was happy to try something new and see what eventuated. Hes innovative and wants to have a go and Ill support anyone who does that, Jeff said. Jeff said he wasnt surprised at the success of the night as there had been a significant amount of interest in the dinner. When we put the sign out the front, we started getting a few calls to make bookings, Jeff said. The Barcoo Hotel will hold another carvery dinner this Sunday night featuring Ashleys beef from 6-8pm, with the possibility of regular Tendabeef meals during tourist season.

Dendles conquer bridge run

Youthful Blackall grandparents Gary and Kathy Dendle successfully completed the 10 kilometre Bridge to Brisbane run last Sunday. In their first attempt at the event, they ranked 8882nd and 8883rd out of more than 42 000 entrants. They have been training for a number of months for the run, pounding the bitumen between their house and the Blackall airport most afternoons after work. Gary said he was able to tick most boxes after the event, completing all he set out to do undertake the longer 10 kilometre section of the run, run all the way,

and do it in under an hour. He and Kathy each completed their mini marathon in 59 minutes and 42 seconds. The only box I didnt tick was winning the car, said Gary, referring to a random prize draw amongst all entrants. I never did well in the middle or long distance running events at school so I really surprised myself. Even so, the last 400 metres of the run were really hard to finish. Already they are talking about what they have learnt for next year, so look out Brisbane!

Walking group does Bridge to Blackall

On Sunday morning, as thousands of people completed the Bridge to Brisbane fun run, the Blackall Heart Foundation walking group was also out pounding the roads with their own version of the event, the Bridge to Blackall. A small group of around ten people turned out to walk three kilometres, starting by crossing the Kargoolnah Bridge. This is the second year the group has held the event, with some of last years participants tackling the Bridge to Brisbane this year. Before starting the walk, the group observed one minutes silence to mark the ten year anniversary of Blackalls Heart Foundation walking group completed a 3 kilometre walk the September 11 terrorist attack in on Sunday for the Bridge to Blackall, their own answer to Brisbane fun run, Bridge to Brisbane. Gorrie led the Blackall youth in graffiti art workshops which saw the creation of a mural on the wall of the youth centre space in the Memorial Hall. Mr Gorrie originally became involved with the Creative Pathways program in 2009 when he performed at Shockwave as part of Brisbane hip hop act, The Coalition Crew. The workshops also marked Longreach dancer Claire Rawlins debut trip as an arts worker, and the realisation of Human Ventures goal to start engaging local arts workers.

Throughout the week Ms Rawlins ran dance workshops, including a swing dance workshops for adults on Thursday. Rounding out the schedule were film and photography workshops facilitated by Steph Vadja, the original producer of the Shockwave festival and Creative Pathways program. The trip also provided a chance for Shockwave organiser Brooke Newall to brief the new Creative Pathways Regional Program Coordinator, Blackall local Bonita Lawrence.
