Day 1

Objectives/ Outcomes Skills: - Students will be able to interact effectively and collaborate with others - Students will develop an awareness of learning, social, and communication strategies Knowledge and Simple Understanding - Students will access knowledge about the French language by using a variety of reference materials and by seeking information from knowledgeable people

Method/ Procedure/ Activity - Have students get into 2-3 large groups of 10-11 students - Hand out the assignment and briefly outline what they will be doing - Provide students with real newspapers and past students work to give an example of what they will be doing - As a class, create a rubric of what is to be expected and included in each groups newspaper and how the project will be assessed - Let each group member choose the topic they wish to cover - Give students the rest of the class to begin brainstorming ideas for their newspaper

Knowledge and Simple understanding: - Students will be able to read, understand, and follow a recipe written in French. - Students will be able to interpret and measure mathematical data presented in recipes. Affect: - Students will be able to convey their feelings about how learning about French cuisine has affected their attitudes, beliefs, feelings, and interests in French culture.

- Students will be in the foods lab to prepare a typical French dish. - Students will be provided with a copy of a French recipe and a list of relevant vocabulary terms. - Students will prepare the recipe according to the directions and measurements and then enjoy eating their creations. - Students will write a brief reflection on the experience.

Informal observation: - Teacher will observe students and answer questions about vocabulary or instructions. Performance: - Students will be given a mark out of five based on their effort and enthusiasm, ability to follow directions, and creation of a visually appealing dish. Student self assessment: - Students will write a brief explanation as to how learning about French cuisine has affected their attitudes, beliefs, feelings, and interests in French culture.

Knowledge and simple understanding: - Students will be able to understand and use vocabulary relating to media. - Students will be able to compose and interpret text messages using French texting shorthand. - Students will be able to decipher key information about an article from the headline.

- Students will be provided with a list of vocabulary terms related to the media. - Students will play a memory game to help them remember the terms. - Students will complete an exercise to practice seeing, hearing, and using the vocabulary words in complete sentences. - Students will then receive a handout about text message shorthand in French. - Students will discuss how and when they use texting and why it is important to them. - Student will create their own series of text messages in pairs. - Students will create their own French texting shorthand words (2 each) - The class will look at a few headlines and try to determine what they mean. - Students will write their own attentiongetting headlines.

Communication (p.5): Foundational Objective: - to develop students understanding of the use of language for differing audiences and purposes Learning Objectives: - discuss the meaning of a message and the appropriateness of the medium used. - identify and understand persuasion and propaganda techniques in all media.

Knowledge and simple understanding: -Students will be able to use the negative in seven different ways. - Students will be able to understand how, when, and why to use the negative in a variety of real-life situations.

- Students will receive a handout detailing how to form the negative. The teacher will go over the handout with the class, and then the teacher and class will model several examples. - Students will work independently on worksheets to practice using the negative. - The class will then learn how to use the negative with the pass compose. - Students will each write one question on the negative that could potentially be used on a future exam. - Then class will play Je ne fais jamais.

- Students will be given an article about a popular celebrity. - Students will read the article and answer questions about it independently. - Students will then discuss their answers in groups. - Students will make up their own questions about the article and have their peers answer them.

Brief Constructed Response: - Students will write responses to the questions and then determine if they are correct by discussing their responses in groups. - Students will give themselves a grade and hand in their work to the teacher.

Knowledge and Simple Understanding: - Students will be able to use comparatives in their speech and writing - Students will be able to compare nouns using plus...que, aussi...que, and moins...que. - Students will be able to determine when to correctly use irregular comparatives, meilleur, mieux, and pire.

- The teacher and students will go over the handout together. - The students will fill in the worksheet. - The class will then play comparative/superlative games (ie. Comparing celebrities, Eigomon, or split class into two groups and have them each come up with a list of sentences; the opposite team will have to correctly complete the sentences and if a group member is incorrect, the team can answer together for half a point.)
