Secretary Launches 50th Anniversary Commemoration of Philippine- News find

24 January 2004 - Foreign Affairs Secretary Alberto G. Romulo welcomed the donation of books about
Germany as an appropriate launching of the celebrations for the 50th Anniversary of Philippine-German
diplomatic relations stressing that “a good knowledge of each other is certainly the foundation if not a
pre-requisite for active relations between countries.”

Speaking during the turn over ceremony of books donated by the Philippine Embassy in Berlin to the
Carlos P. Romulo Library at the Department of Foreign Affairs this afternoon, Secretary Romulo said that
this event is “an appropriate kick-off activity for the 50th anniversary of the establishment of Philippine-
German diplomatic relations, which we commemorate this year…(and)..as we celebrate 50 years of
friendship and cooperation, we hope these books will help strengthen our bilateral relations in the next 50
years.” The theme for the celebration is “Partners in Progress.”

The Foreign Affairs Secretary welcomes the addition to the Library’s resources in the form of 34 books • Philippine Map

The CPR Library has a collection of approximately 10,000 volumes of books and many more publications • 1987 Constitution

Philippine government throughout history. The books from Germany will make available to library users

On 25 April 2005, ceremonies marking the 50 years will take place at the respective Foreign Ministries in
Manila and Berlin. The ceremonies will focus on the achievements since 1955 and the vision for the next
50 years.

Intercontinental Berlin. An invitation-only gala evening will officially open the Festival, which includes a
food festival at the hotel’s L.A. Café, an art exhibit featuring four Philippine artists, a textile exhibition on
the ikat weave from southern Philippines, “Banduria” string ensemble playing daily at the coffee shop,
launching of the cookbook of Ms. Patricia Arroyo-Staub with a cooking demonstration tentatively
scheduled on 4 May 2005.

A lecture series by leading Philippine social scientist and academic Mary Racelis will be held in Bonn on
26 April, Berlin on 28 April and Hamburg on 29 April 2005. Ms. Racelis will discuss the role of civil
society in national and global politics and Philippine democracy today.

A Philippine-German Film festival dubbed “Kaisa” will showcase Philippine films influenced by German
cinema and German films shot in the Philippines. An art exhibit of German-based Filipino painter Gene
Lungay will also be staged.
