DESCRIPTION:
Civil Engineering Technicians help Civil Engineers plan and oversee the building of highways, bridges, water/wastewater and other structures. Some estimate construction costs and specify materials to be used, some may even prepare drawings or perform land-surveying duties like monitoring instruments.
SKILLs:
Ability to work as a team, communicating technical information in an organized manner Good oral and communication skills Execute timelines and deal with unexpected situations effectively
EDUCATION:
Completion of a two year college program in civil engineering technology or a closely related discipline Certication in civil engineering technology or in a related led is available through provincial associations of engineering/applied science technologists and technicians and may be required for some positions

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
The program has been designed to provide students with the skills and knowledge in computer aided drafting, computer applications, surveying, laboratory testing (soil, concrete and asphalt), construction estimating, basic structural design in steel, reinforced concrete and timber, design of water distribution and sewage collection systems, geotechnical analysis and foundation design, road and highway analysis and design, construction inspection, project management, and writing technical reports and correspondence.

THE FOLLOWING ARE 3 SIMPLE WAYS OF GETTING STARTED IN THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY:
You can begin by applying for a job directly in the Civil Construction Industry. Once you begin working with a Construction Company or Contractor you will quickly gain the necessary skills needed to advance yourself through in-house, work-as-you-learn training. You can enrol in a University, Community College or a Private Technical School to study and prepare yourself for a Career in Civil Construction. All of this information may be found through our website. You can get started through an apprenticeship program by combining on the job training with technical in-class training gaining experience and increased responsibility. You can work in the industry, get paid and work towards earning credits.
