Camera Modes

Program: Camera chooses an optimal combination of shutter & aperture according to an built-in program to ensure a proper exposure for a situation. Great for Snap-shots. Shutter Priority: You choose a shutter speed and the camera chooses an aperture for the optimal exposure Aperture Priority: You choose an aperture value (f-stop) and the camera selects the shutter speed for the optimal exposure Manual: You select both the shutter and the aperture values. This allows you to override your camera and to give you the most latitude to be creative.

Denitions
Aperture: Mechanism that controls how Shutter: Mechanism in front of the lm/
MUCH light can enter the camera. It is a round diaphragm in the lens. Described as an f-stop. Controls Depth of Field sensor plane that controls how LONG the lm/sensor is exposed to light. Measured as a fraction of a second. 1/125th of a sec. Controls blur / motion / speed

Light Meter
Measures the amount to light entering your camera. This is light that has bounced off your subject. Calibrated with software to a statistically average scene using 18% grey as a baseline.

ISO = International Standards

Organization... How sensitive the sensor or lm is to light. ISO 100 ISO 200 ISO 400 ISO 800 ISO 1600 less sensitive = more light

more sensitive = less light

Wednesday, April 6, 2011

What is a Stop??
A stop is exactly a whole or half difference in the amount of light controlled by the either the shutter or the aperture or the lm/senor sensitivity.
Under Exposed Good Exposure Over Exposed

1/8 sec @ f-11 1 Stop Under

1/4 sec @ f-11

1/2 sec @ f-11 1 stop over

Focus

Wednesday, April 6, 2011

AF / Manual

AF = Auto focus Typically engages AF when you push the shutter down half way Single Servo = Focus will remain locked while shutter is held halfway down to allow you to compose your image. Static subjects Continues Servo = The camera will track a subject as long as AF is activated. Manual Focus = Camera will not focus on its own, users must focus lens. Allows you to shoot at any moment. AF works with brightness and contrast in a scene. Sometimes it doesnt work very well.

White Balance
Fine tuning the color temp of your photographs. Daylight balance is about 5000K Tungsten balance is about 3200K Balance in this case is dened as having a neutral white in your image

Exercise
Set your camera to work in half stops with
the aperture and shutter.

Turn off auto ISO Set ISO to work in full stops ISO readout 100-200-400-800-1600 Use ISO 100 / 200 / 400 outside Use ISO 400 / 800 / 1600 / inside

Home Work

by pushing buttons

Take your camera with you during your day. Think about seeing the world in frames Think about what you want your images to
