Course Title: Health Education


General description of the course:
The rationale behind designing this course is that the health and medical care setting such as
hospital,nursing home,private clinics, and health centres or health projects where there are
probabilities of utilizing medical graduates,should have health education activities as an
indispensable companent of total medical care. Since medical graduates are more likely to work in
these settings, they need to be equipped with the basic concept and components of patient health
education so as to facilitates health education activities in the medical care settings. Hence,this
course is basically focused on patient-health education management and applied to health and
medical care settings in general and patient in particular.
Health Education is the science of informing people how to achieve and maintain good health;
of motivating them to do so; and of promoting environmental and lifestyle changes to facilitate
their objective.
The course is divided into 3 parts and behavioural objectives are set for each chapter
separately.

General Objectives:
The students will be able to comprehend the role of health education and carry out health
counselling and health education activities
.
Specific and Behavioural Objectives:
Chapter 1 Introduction of Health Education 6 hours
(1) Master the definitions of health, population health, health education and health promotion.
(2) Master the theory of KAP(knowledge, attitude and practice) and KABP(knowledge,
attitude,belief and practice).
(3) Know well the definitions of perception, knowledge, attitude and behavior.
(4) Understand the objectives of health education

Chapter 2 Measuring Health and Disease in Populations 10 hours


(1) Master the concepts of basic measures of disease and death such as Incidence, Prevalence,
Crude Death rate, Mortality rate ,Life expectancy, etc.
(2) Master the calculation of these measures of disease and death including Incidence, Prevalence,
Crude Death rate, Mortality rate ,Life expectancy, etc.
(3) Master the Determinants of Health: Genetic susceptibility, physical environment, personal
lifestyles and behaviors, Social, cultural and economic factors.
(4) Know well other health indices: Potential years of life lost, Infant mortality rate and so on.
(5) Understand the historic development patterns of diseases in developed and developing
countries.
(6) Understand the efforts and contributions of some famous health care workers in the world in
medicine and disease control.

Chapter 3 Strategies of health education 8 hours

(2) Master the PRECEDE/PROCEED model of health promotion planning that Green proposed.
(3) Know well the strategy of primary health care and its relationship with health education and
health promotion.
(4) Know well the Declaration of Alma-Ata and its aim and contents.
(5) Understand other strategies: health education research, health education for HIV/AIDS,
smoking control, health education for children and teenagers’ health.
