Legislative Affairs, Ms. KelmHelgen met with members of our coalition of licensed family child care providers to discuss the issue of child care unions in Minnesota. We were saddened and disturbed to read an article on Minnesota Public Radio.org last week in which you indicated that you would be addressing the proposed child care union issue in the next week or two. We do not believe you should move forward without having direct conversations with the providers who are opposed to the effort to unionize all licensed family child care providers in Minnesota. We believe it is vital that you meet with and hear directly from this side of the union discussion. Based on the previous practice of the unions here and in other states, we have many valid concerns. These include, but are not limited to, the process of a potential vote, the validity of the unions support cards, the conduct of union organizers when soliciting support, and questions regarding the necessity of union representation for our independent small businesses. Your decision to proceed will have lasting consequences for family child care professionals and the families we serve. With our six years of experience and research on this issue we are available to assist you in understanding the implications of your decision. We again respectfully ask to meet directly with you to discuss the proposed child care unions before you make a decision. We look forward to your response.
