Write Up (500 word essay)

Topic - Unless a man undertakes more than he can possibly do, he will never do all that he can do."
Henry Drummond

Competitor: Robert Schoennagle (Northern Schuylkill Jaycees)

What does Henry Drummond's quote, "unless a man undertakes more than he possibly can do,
he will never do all that he can," mean? It means reaching for the stars, dreaming big, or taking it beyond
the limit. To achieve goals, one must have big expectations of doing great things, and, then, follow
through to make it happen. If one does not succeed at first, keep trying. There is no such thing as failure,
it is only a success waiting to happen. Thinking big does not always produce desired outcomes, but it
makes one work harder to achieve results.
Throughout the history of the world and the Jaycees, one can find examples of men or women,
who undertook the impossible to prove that something possible could be done. Without people like Rosa
Parks, Jonas Salk, Marie Curie, or Henry Giessenbier, today's world would be much different.
Rosa Parks dared to sit in the front of that bus on that December 1, 1955 day. Whether or not
she knew it, she was doing more than anyone could possibly understand to wipe out injustice or racism.
Her actions started a revolution in the civil rights movement that still echoes today. At the time, she may
not have realized that sitting in that bus seat would create change, but it did. Rose Parks went beyond
the limit to do what needed to be done.
Scientists like Jonas Salk and Marie Curie were ridiculed by their peers for dreaming big.
However, without their dedication and hard work, science would not be where it is today. Salk realized
there was a need to bring polio to its knees, and he did it. Even when others doubted it could be
accomplished, Salk continued to undertake the impossible to achieve what he knew could be done.
Marie Curie was a legend before her time. She worked tirelessly in her field to produce results that would
change the history of science forever. Her isolation of radium and its therapeutic properties have
changed the medical field forever. Without her will to reach for stars, Curie would not have gone beyond
the limits of her expectations.
In our own Jaycee history, there is a man who undertook more than others thought could possibly
be done, and he achieved greatness with the best young person's organization in the world - the
JAYCEES. Henry Giessenbier dreamed of an organization that would help turn young men into better
business and community leaders. He undertook almost the impossible dream to create the Jaycees;
many people scoffed at his ideas and what he was trying to do. Giessenbier, by setting lofty goals,
working hard to achieve them and overcoming many obstacles along the way, realized he could do more
than he had ever expected. By reaching for the impossible, he did the possible and more.
Parks, Salk, Curie, and Giessenbier all believed that you had to undertake more than the possible
to realize ones full potential, and that is what Drummond was trying to say.

Impromptu Write Up

Topic - Unless a man undertakes more than he can possibly do, he will never do all that he can do."
Henry Drummond

Competitor: Jennifer Workman (York Jaycees)

There are people in this world you meet who change you forever. The ones who leave
impression on your heart, leave you the better for it. These are the people that make us smile, push us to
be better, and inspire us to reach for our dreams. They make us climb to new heights, by making us
believe in ourselves. But, we never know how high we will be able to go unless our dreams and goals are
beyond the stars. We need to have big dreams so we can grow into them.
Once we start to dream big, we need to realize that there are people in this world, and in our
lives, that believe in us. These people know that we can succeed, they know it more than us. So, dream
big and remember that there are people who believe in your success.
