The expansion and upgrade of Mumbais Domestic and International Airport terminals. The individual structures were designed in collaboration with Design Cell Landscape Architects, Hafeez Contractor Architects, Taiyo Membrane India and MakMax Australia.

the brief

To transform the current hurried passage to and from drop off point/taxi queue/car park and create an elegant, spacious gateway betting Indias nancial capital. The design must also offer visual interest and protection from Mumbais extreme weather.

the concept

Innovative thinking combines a visually intriguing nish reecting Mumbais wealth and sophistication with a surprising element of practicality. Provision for rain water collection during Mumbais monsoon season was of signicant importance. Regardless of the weather, the creatively beautiful undulating effects of light and colour welcomed and farewelled all travellers.

the materials

The architect chose a exible PVC fabric over a solid material due to the huge space that needed to be covered. PVC fabric also provides enhanced design exibility as well as aesthetic impact.

the result

The high-tech tensile membrane design created an impactful image that reected a city of extreme elegance, charm and appreciation for functional creativity. Using a tensile membrane structure the steel weight for the Departures Canopy was reduced from 200 tonne to 110 tonne. From concept to completion, the upgrade won the admiration of both the Design architects and Mumbai International Airport authorities plus, it won the 2008 ACASPA Award for Excellence, Tension Structure category and was declared the overall winner in the 2008 ACASPA Award for Excellence (Australia).

project details
Client Ocean Newline Location Bangkok, Thailand

A transformation of TK Yala Park, Southern Thailands The Knowledge Park. The Park has provided the local community with a dynamic living library and sports activity area for many years.

the brief

To renovate and revamp this centre. The challenge was to capture the light, energy, philosophy and movement of the centre in such a way it would integrate centuries of local culture with the very latest advances in construction technology.

Architect Archiplan Co. Ltd. Engineer MakMax Australia Size 810 m2 Fabric Verseidag 18901 PTFE Sheell V PTFE Date of installation January 2007

the concept

The balance between past, future and national identity was a strong design inuence. The choice of fabric/membrane construction materials was inspired by Yala mat weaving which has long been an integral part of the local culture.

the materials

Selection criteria involved longevity and non-combustibility, making PTFE the fabric of choice. We began testing other materials for the weave panels and settled on Verseidag 18901 PTFE fabric. This had tested exceptionally well in combination with Sheerll V PTFE and offered a much higher translucency resulting in increased illumination.

the result

Aesthetically pleasing, culturally signicant, and here for the long haul; the completed project successfully combined the cultural weave of the Yala community with the advanced technology of new design materials.

project details
Client Movie World Location Queensland, Australia

Australias Movie World Theme Park welcomes over 1.3 million visitors annually with some 7000 people per day in summer. With its growing popularity as a function venue, the seating capacity of its restaurants would quickly need rethinking.

the brief

Design and construct a exible space with a permanent roof structure and signicantly increase seating capacity. An additional challenge was that construction had to happen outside park operating hours.

Architect Alan Grifth Architects Engineer Alliance Consulting Group Size 4000 m2

the concept

Considering the elements involved (huge area, wet weather protection, aesthetics and nancial responsibilities) Alan Grifth Architects opted for a barrel vault design that would successfully integrate interior and exterior. This ticked all the boxes for maximum design efciencies and value with a minimal volume of fabric.

Fabric Ferrari 1202 T2 PVC Date of installation August 2008

the materials

PVC tensile membrane was chosen for the roof for its durability, longevity and superior coverage (the surface area being approx 4000 m) It also harnesses natural light and by using less material, delivered a lightweight structure with maximum visual appeal.

the result

In keeping with the theme park philosophy, the structure not only fullled the brief (seating capacity was increased 78% from 330 to 1500), it created an additional attraction. The sky-high hallway of light beneath a skyline wave can be seen easily from the nearby busy highway, creating great intrigue and a promise of another great experience at Movie World.

the project the brief

project details
Client GS Construction Location Busan, Korea Architect Mass Studies Engineer Taiyo Kogyo Corporation Size 1780 m Fabric Fluon ETFE Film Date of installation October 2007

To design and construct Xi Model House as a centre that would accommodate commerce and community in a progressive, dynamic style.

To create a design of great beauty and integrity; a design that would respect the landscape, culture and philosophy of the beautiful marine city of Busan as well as honour all future development. The design challenge would be to incorporate the logo of Xi Model House in such a way it would remain as a proud signature for all to see.

the concept

Flowing lines and curves give the impression of life and movement while the transparent outer wall utilises natural light to illuminate the interior and cause the wall itself to resonate with the ever-changing light.

the materials

Selection criteria included strength, durability, light weight and cost effectiveness, making EFTE the perfect choice. The EFTE walls breathed almost imperceptibly, as the panels lled with air. Its light diffusion effects produce a ood of natural illumination that ebbed and owed following the suns movement across the sky. The dramatically crafted walls also changed colour with the changing lights, while the Xi Model House logo remained in view day and night!

the result

Feedback from the public has been outstanding. The construction is seen as a quality undertaking that is based on futuristic design, advanced technological materials and is in keeping with both traditional culture as well as the bustling cosmopolitan philosophy of Busan itself.

Client Mot & Chandon Australia Location Melbourne Cup Carnival Flemington Architect PTW Architects Engineer MakMax Australia

At Australias prestigious Melbourne Cup Carnival, sponsors marquees also vie for rst place! Mot & Chandon wanted to make sure their tent would eclipse the big race itself!

Mot & Chandon commissioned PTW Architects to create a VIP birdcage tent. It should be light, easy to erect and dismantle and it should epitomise everything that is loved about French champagne especially the bubbles.

the concept

Together with PTW architects we brought imagination to reality. The larger than life bubbles mimicked the surface tension of bubbly and were light, airy and truly spectacular.

Size 100 m2, 38kg Fabric Lycra Date of installation November 2005

the materials

Finite Element software and the latest patterning techniques were employed. To compensate for the stretch properties of Lycra, the material had to be patterned over 12% smaller than the nal shape in order to achieve a totally smooth, wrinkle-free effect. Fixed to the roof of the marquee and supported primarily by gravity, the structures shape is based on 31 individual panels sewn together. Installation and dismantling took less than an hour, the completed structure weighed less than 38 kg and was transported in a sports bag to and from the site.

the result

PTW Architect Chris Bosse has been hailed as the leader of Bubbleism. His bubbles can be found in the Beijing Aquatic Centre, Stadia China Exhibit and Germany Entry Pavilion. Described as an avant-garde environment not of this earth in the media, the Mot & Chandon marquee went on to win many awards including the Australian Canvas And Synthetic Products Association (ACASPA) award for excellence and IFAI award for excellence under the category of Tradeshow & Exhibition Stands in 2005.

for textile faade & interiors

Description Application > All usage on the on the TS-range > Indoor and outdoor use for fabric panels 250g/m to 650g/m > Exceptional resistance to tearing > Large size self supporting frame > Self supporting frame > Two sided partition > No risk of bending > Resistant to cutting and tearing > Light box (one or both sides) > Acoustic partition > Two sided partition > Medium size frame (< 3 m) > Self supporting frame > Two sided partitions Dimensions Bars: 3050 mm W: 19 mm Weight Key: 0.103 kg/m Gripp: 0.25 kg/m

The combination of the TS Key & Gripp gives a perfect nish to the product. It makes the PVC Gripp keep its tightened position inside the aluminium channel, whilst giving exceptional resistance to tearing. It also protects the PVC Gripp against external pollution (such as UV). TS Master can be xed on a rigid surface to obtain a steady frame. It enables erection of large size structures. The extra channels enable the installation of one or more fabrics on one single prole. The extrusion thickness makes this product a steady and sturdy frame with no risk of bending. TS Master + 90 is used mostly in light-box modules. The addition of TS Back supports the structure giving rigidity and an aesthetic appearance. The TS Mod is strong and polyvalent (multichannels). Insulating partitions, removable and modulated structures can be built with TS Mod.

Sustainability
Greener by design
While our designs, materials and structures create enormous impact around the world, the impact on our environment is remarkably low. Faced with global warming, uncertain economies, the proliferation of population and depletion of natural resources, Sustainable Design is a positive step towards maintaining a greener, healthier environment and a desirable quality of life.
Our goals are to produce products in such a way we reduce the use of non-renewable resources and minimise environmental impact. These products include a titanium dioxide (TiO2) coated fabric, ETFE and Kenane remarkable advances that positively impact on a cleaner, greener environment. We are proud of the synergy between technological advances and environmental responsibility. Not only does our Research & Development facility continue to produce these newer, greener products and systems, we also support Texyloop, the international PVC recycling initiative established by Ferrari Textiles.

Sustainability

Lightweight
We have reduced our manufacturing processes by utilising less steel and other resources. The result is a much lighter carbon footprint.

Superior insulation and energy efciency

Translucent membranes transmit up to 92% of daylight while reecting the heat associated with traditional glazing. This provides natural illumination that is cooler on the hottest days yet warmer in winter. The cost efciencies on heating, cooling and lighting are considerable when compared to traditional methods.
30

Less is more
Because translucent membranes transmit up to 92% of daylight, they provide a naturally superior light source and dramatically reduce the demands on electricity. Multiply this natural illumination by large areas, such as sports stadiums, and the ecological and economical savings are substantial.
10 20

Longevity
Since longevity is the key to reduced manufacturing processes, all our materials are created to endure the most extreme elements (rain, wind, snow, sun) from 10 to 30 plus years. The life spans outlast traditional materials and sustain little or no deterioration of appearances.

Greener and cleaner

Our coating technologies reduce the need for cleaning chemicals because our self-cleaning fabrics resist dirt, stains and pollutants; a little rain will restore the surface back to original.

Recyclable
We aim for no-waste, low waste so all our materials, including steel are recyclable. ETFE is recycled back into ETFE. Kenane is recycled into paper products such as envelopes and all PVC coated fabrics can be recycled through Texyloop.

Cleaner air
TiO2 photo catalyst technology reacts with the atmosphere to absorb nitrogen oxide (NOx) and purify the air. Our recently developed Kenane product is a biomass membrane material made with bres from the herb, Kenaf. This herb is renowned for its ability to absorb more harmful carbon dioxide from the atmosphere than any other plant or tree.

Research & Development

The innite possibilities of membranes
In one of historys most challenging eras, todays Research & Development teams must react quickly and effectively to solve eco problems and create a more sustainable environment. To this end, we promote a exible attitude that encourages freedom of communication and idea exchange to fast track technological progress.
Already, the breakthroughs with membrane technologies are indicating a greener, more economically responsible future and inspiring us to explore the possibilities even further. We are currently engaged in knowledge sharing as we build vital relationships across wide-ranging elds of expertise and research. This cross-pollination is proving a fertile area that supports ongoing pilot programs and study networks conducted jointly with other companies. Our ultimate goal is to objectively evaluate research activities and take advantage of opportunities that arise from global trends. Research areas: > Material development > Examination, measurement and evaluation > Experiment and numerical value analysis > Product development > Environmental policy Through experimental, numerical analysis and measurement we will continue to drive superior systems and end products.

Research & Development

TiO2

Photocatalytic membrane structures which utilise TiO2 coating technology promise enduring beauty, translucence and as new appearances for many years. When PVC or PTFE membranes are coated with titanium dioxide (TiO2) photo-catalyst, they inherit self-cleaning properties thats far superior to conventional membranes. Its called the Photocatalytic Decomposition Process, a selfcleaning action that occurs as the TiO2 causes any organic matter (stain or pollutant) to decompose through simple oxidation. The residue does not adhere to the surface and is washed away by water or rain. Known as the Photocatalytic

Hydrophilicity Process, The sheeting action of water across the surface assures no unsightly streaking is left behind due to beading. PTFE and PVC membranes treated with TiO2 also remove signicant volumes of nitrogen oxide (NOx) from the atmosphere. In this reaction between TiO2 and the air, both nitrogen and sulphur oxide from vehicle exhaust emissions, are decomposed to produce cleaner, purer air; at a rate of 1.2g (NOx)/1000m/h.*

* Removal performance is based on the capability to remove NOx being emitted during an hour drive at an average speed of 22km/h. Source: Professor Emeritus Akira Fujishima and Professor Kazuhito Hashimoto, Tokyo University.

Kenane

Recently developed Kenane is a biomass membrane material made with bres from the African herb, kenaf. This extraordinary plant has one of the highest rates of carbon dioxide absorption in the plant world and is a very effective agent in combating global warming. Kenane is made by weaving kenaf plant bres with polyester bres into a base fabric, which is then coated with thermoplastic resin. This is a PVC free product that releases no toxic substances if burned. The other benet is this material is 100% recyclable and can be easily turned into paper products. Unlike wood pulp, Kenane can become paper without the use of chemicals.

Photoluminescence
We were heavily involved in the creation of this unique and remarkable membrane. By adding a photoluminescent pigment the fabric promises shade and UV protection during the day and a stunning visual effect at night. After dark, the membrane glows with stored daylight, illuminating both interior and exterior.
